2013 Canadian Olympic Curling Trials edit

Hey Earl! I saw you reverted one of my edits on 2013 Canadian Olympic Curling Trials. Was there a mistake? I'm quite sure those standings were updated correctly. Prayerfortheworld (talk) 00:45, 5 December 2013 (UTC)Reply

I have no recollection of doing that, I must have clicked it by accident. Sorry! I have undid it. -- Earl Andrew - talk 02:02, 5 December 2013 (UTC)Reply

Maria Wennerström edit

I did see that, but in working on a Russian language biography I found her profile on the website of the Swedish Olympic Committee (http://www.sok.se/aktiva/aktiva/mariawennerstrom.5.2635f3a9137d893573c222a.html) which lists her birthday as October forth. This would be written as 04.10.1985 in Sweden which can be confused for April 10th in North America.--MorrisIV (talk) 13:31, 3 January 2014 (UTC)Reply

2013 Continental Cup GA edit

Hey Earl! The 2013 Continental Cup article is under review for GA status, and it's pretty close, but I'm having a bit of trouble addressing this reviewer's question at the bottom of the GA review page. Any thoughts? Thanks! Prayerfortheworld (talk) 17:11, 11 January 2014 (UTC)Reply

Just to be clear, I was referring to this part of the reviewer's post: "Lasting impact on curling from the events of the Cup. Was there any career changes or effects from the events which transpired. More or less." Thanks! Prayerfortheworld (talk) 21:36, 11 January 2014 (UTC)Reply

Electoral redistribution edit

Thanks for getting the ball rolling with your electoral district redistribution page! The riding of Nepean (Ottawa area), is being reborn so I made a note of that. I noticed the page is in the category of defunct ridings: True currently, because Parliament hasn't been dissolved after May 1, 2014 yet. But it's about to be born again. I have no idea how to find what categories are out there, but if there's a category for ridings about to be recreated, can you please add the Nepean page to that category? Thanks! 173.206.136.69 (talk) 02:04, 14 January 2014 (UTC)Reply

Byron Strip edit

When I wrote the original entry, I did not know the name "Tramway Park" . Since you made the change I have investigated it, and believe that it only refers to the part of the Byron Strip, West of Westboro Village. If so, I think the title should revert to Byron Strip, and the paragraph on the western section adjusted with the name.

If I am not correct, I think mention should be made to it being locally known as the Byron Strip. I have lived near Carlingwood for the last 38 years and have never heard it called by any other name, even in the Citizen, until recently.

DonJay (talk) 15:21, 28 February 2014 (UTC).Reply

Hi again

I have replaced reference to the Eastern section, made a couple spelling corrections and added Bay Ward (to include part west of Woodroffe. I am still unsure of the extent of the park. Do you have any city reference that says it extends to Holland?

A Google search give many hits to "Byron Strip", much more than "Byron Tramway Park", so I have included its popular name.

Prince of Wales on the Rideau edit

I was thinking of changing this page as some of the facts appear wrong. I note you have made recent edits. First the farm was purchased by the government as a vetterans home, then may surplus and sold to the NCC. It was not the city that swapped it with the developer, but the NCC. I was interested at the time as it was one of my dog walking places. I feel that Ottawa (city) is slandered by the page. DonJay (talk) 02:11, 3 March 2014 (UTC)Reply

Saanich RM edit

I note this cooptation of the "Saanich" title, as if the municipality and other meanings did not exist; and the pretense that peoples and languages are necessarily the primarytopic is the pretext of opposition to the current RM at Talk:Saanich, British Columbia#Requested move. This is not polling as I am not looking for biased input, only comment on the obvious and demonstrable matters at hand.Skookum1 (talk) 03:11, 1 April 2014 (UTC)Reply

And since I know you were around in the days of what I have been calling "the old consensus" about native titles and necessities and unnecessary and confusing dabs, please see this commentary on the Ethnicities and tribes naming convention]; that page is in need of broader input than the narrow parameters of the two WP:NCL-mavens currently stonewalling discussion. It's a bit of a manifesto about the principles that were in play for a very long time until the NCL crowd decided to remake ethno title according to their own POV/agenda without any discussion with affected titles, or even reading content affected.Skookum1 (talk) 03:16, 1 April 2014 (UTC)Reply

Riverview, Ottawa edit

I had a feeling you'd revert me today, though not on this page. I will deal with them in the order I saw them.

1. Lycée Claudel: You are 100% correct. I realized it five minutes later, when comparing the Elections Canada map of Ottawa South to those of Capital Ward and Alta Vista Ward. Good revert.

2. Chinese (Cantonese, Mandarin, etc.): What exactly *is* "etc."? You give no references whatsoever, and your use of the phrase "sole mother tongue" is confusing. Do you mean "language that this person first learned at home in childhood and still understands"? Listing the top 2 Chinese topolects by name while the rest have to settle for "etc." is imprecise, and doesn't do nearly as much for the reader as would a simple link to Varieties of Chinese. That said, I will concede that "Chinese (not otherwise specified)" correlates to only one bit of your 4%. If you're being reasonable, you will concede that with no refs, nobody can reasonably check.

So...let's call that one a good revert to a bad version. Let's see some refs! HuntClubJoe (talk) 03:05, 2 April 2014 (UTC)Reply

Hi Earl! I was wondering if you knew anything about this issue brought up by a user regarding whether the juniors were held in the city or DM of North Vancouver. Election results — Swing calculation edit

Hi Earl
I noticed you calculated & revised a number of swing figures like for Thunder Bay—Superior North (provincial electoral district) here.  I'd appreciate it if you would share with me the formula or source you're using so that I can verify some of the other swing numbers as I'm looking at so many other election results tables.  Thanks  — Who R you? Talk 14:45, 3 June 2014 (UTC)Reply
P.S. FYI, {{CANelec/hold}} and {{CANelec/gain}} (Canadian election result/hold & …/gain) are available if that makes it any easier.

I see you already commented on Calculation of Swing before I even got a chance to mention it   (Thanks).  I'm wondering if you have any opinion of Election results in politician articles as well.  Cheers  — Who R you? Talk 17:58, 3 June 2014 (UTC)Reply
P.S. Thanks for the reply earlier regarding how swing is calculated!

Changes to Infobox curler edit

Hey Earl! Dalton McGuinty Sr. edit

After a closer look at the references I could find, it appears that McGuinty was a trustee up until December 1986 when full funding of separate schools was implemented. I am surmising that in Ottawa there was a combined board of public and separate trustees rather than separate boards as is the case in Toronto.

I am curious to know how you managed to find the Google newspaper reference for McGuinty's separate school record. I have tried before but my search engines are not discrete enough. Thanks, EncyclopediaUpdaticus (talk) 16:48, 7 September 2014 (UTC)Reply

Ottawa Wikimedia community? edit

Hi there,
I'm new to Ottawa...and Wikipedia too (but I have been contributing to Wikidata). This might be a bit of a longshot, but I'm wondering if you know of any Ottawa-area Wikipedia/Wikimedia meetups? It seems there was one at some point that later became a Yahoo Group, although it looks like there hasn't been much activity in the group since 2007. I'm asking because I'd be interested in a regular meetup of people who contribute (Ottawa-related knowledge or otherwise), so if you have any leads or suggestions, please drop me a line.

Mayors in Quebec edit

Just a quick reminder about alphabetical order for French names and titles — the articles le, la, l' or les mean "the", so the rule that applies to them is the same as the one that applies to "the": you exclude them and alphabetize the name beginning with the word after the article (e.g. L'Assomption goes under A, La Malbaie under M, Les Éboulements under E, and on and so forth) rather than under L. Bearcat (talk) 17:35, 16 October 2014 (UTC)Reply

You can see fr:Classement alphabétique#Titres d'ouvrages if you need clarification of what the rules are for French ordering. And it doesn't make sense to not follow that rule on here — especially when it's actually the same rule that we use in English. The only difference between a title beginning with "the" and a title beginning with "le/la/l'/les" is the form of the word, not the way in which it's getting treated. Bearcat (talk) 20:51, 16 October 2014 (UTC)Reply
Even the English article on alphabetical order is quite explicit on why you can't take a computer-sorted list as a priori evidence that the rule isn't the rule — you can easily find lots of computer-sorted lists on the Internet which sort English titles that begin with "the" under T instead of properly following the actual rule for alphabetization of "the" too. But that doesn't mean that the rule itself has actually been changed, it just means that the list wasn't correctly sorted to follow it. And no, the rules aren't any different in Quebec than they are in France, either — so if another list isn't following the standard rule, then instead of using that as precedent to break the rule in more lists the solution is to fix the ones that are broken. But ultimately, the question is whether there's any particular reason why we should act as if the definite article didn't mean "the", and file "L'Assomption" or "La Malbaie" under L — what actual substantive purpose would it serve to do that? If you have, don't worry: just edit the page again to fix it. If I misunderstood what happened, or if you have any questions, you can leave a message on my operator's talk page.

Disambiguation link notification for November 13 edit

Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. Wikipedia appreciates your help. We noticed though that when you edited British Columbia municipal elections, 2014, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page Gregor Robertson. Such links are almost always unintended, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of "Did you mean..." article titles. Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.

A Barnstar For You edit

  The Canadian Curling Barnstar
For your hard work creating "Canadian Curling Articles", which you had created a long time ago. I plan on taking them all to GA status with the help of your hard work creating those articles. Honestly, up until a few days ago, I didn't even know what a skip was. Many thanks,  ΤheQ Editor  Talk? 01:14, 15 November 2014 (UTC)Reply
