Infobox curling edit

Hey Earl! I noticed you made a change in the {{infobox curling}} template, but it caused a error, so I reverted it. Is there something specific that you were trying to get the template to do?

Also, the GA nomination for Sandra Schmirler is on hold, and one of the queries that the reviewer had is that the article is categorized under "Canadian people of German descent" and "Canadian people of Norwegian descent," but it's not sourced or anything. Do you know where that could be found? Thanks! Prayerfortheworld (talk) 22:10, 1 December 2012 (UTC)Reply

Sorry, one more thing. Do you know how to resolve the first comment on the GA review? I'm not familiar with the context of the nickname, and I don't know how to address its notability... Thanks! Prayerfortheworld (talk) 22:14, 1 December 2012 (UTC)Reply
Hi, there was an issue on the 2005 Pacific Curling Championships page that I created. The "third" position shows up in the infobox, but it shouldn't. Also, would happen to be able to make a playoff bracket with a best of 3 semi final (the one I used was a best of 5).
As for Schmirler, I have no proof of her ancestry. I think someone came along and added it based on her surname. I assume she would be part German, but since Peterson is her married name, she probably isn't Norwegian. Also, I don't know what to say about her nickname. Why not mention the rhyme? -- Earl Andrew - talk 01:27, 2 December 2012 (UTC)Reply
I fixed the "third" parameter on that page. You just have to keep the parameter, but put "none" (as in Third = none). This works for the Curling club parameter as well. There's a PACC best of 3 template that I created for this year's competitions here: {{4TeamBracket-PACC3}}. Hope that helps!
For Schmirler, should I just remove those categories? And the reviewer wasn't sure it was notable. I guess I can try to incorporate that somewhere in the text and cut some of the info on the nickname in the lead? Prayerfortheworld (talk) 02:05, 2 December 2012 (UTC)Reply
Sounds good to me, thanks. -- Earl Andrew - talk 02:08, 2 December 2012 (UTC)Reply

Jamie Sinclair edit

Hi! I am worried about the Jamie Sinclair article. I just had to mark the two inline citations as {{Dead Link}}. This leaves the article very light on verifiable content. I am aquainted with Jamie and would hate to see her article get axed by the Wikinazis. Let's see if we can locate some better information on her. I will watch this page, so go ahead and replay here. Eric Cable  |  Talk  13:32, 10 December 2012 (UTC)Reply

I am somewhat acquainted with her too, I've played against her a few years ago. She certainly meets WP:CURLING because she is on the WCT (albeit has played in just one event) and has played in the Canadian Juniors. I see that she has qualified for another Junior provincial, so we may see her again at the 2013 Canadian Juniors. -- Earl Andrew - talk 17:40, 10 December 2012 (UTC)Reply

NHL in Portal:Current events/Sports edit

Results of regular season games of NFL, MLB, NBA, IPL or domestic soccer competitions are not be included. Why is NHL given special treatment? Please, please read Portal talk:Current events/Sports/Archive 2 and don't post NHL scores. --61.245.25.17 (talk) 04:57, 23 January 2013 (UTC)Reply

Due to the page's lack of activity these days, I think we should re-visit the issue. I vote that we re-instate adding scores from any major professional sports league. -- Earl Andrew - talk 05:02, 23 January 2013 (UTC)Reply

Scotties colours edit

I've been watching the Canadian Women's Curling Championship since 1994. Nova Scotia has been wearing navy blue and white every year I've watched. Secondly, IMHO, having black lettering on blue backgrounds is difficult to read. :-) And I also was correcting geographic mistakes and extraneous information – ie. there's only one Toronto in Canada and everyone knows it's in Ontario, and most people know the difference between Saint John and St. John`s. – Jwkozak91 (talk) 01:45, 19 February 2013 (UTC)Reply

Difficulty with an editor edit

Aside from curling I also do quite a bit of editing of badminton articles. Recently a new editor, User:The tampan, has somewhat drastically reorganized pages with a new bracket design, including re-editing competitions which have been completed for sometime. This user has not provided any rationale for the new design even though myself and one other editor have reached out for an explanation. The Wikipedia:Wikiproject:Badminton group is not as well organized as Curling's equivalent so it is difficult to reach a consensus. What should be our next course of action? I am considering undoing all of The tampan's edits to Super Series articles (which are numerous) and leaving a message on the SS pages not to tamper unless a consensus can be reached for a change. Another option is to temporarily block The tampan from editing, but that seems overly harsh for someone who started editing on January third of this year.--MorrisIV (talk) 20:22, 28 February 2013 (UTC)Reply

I've thought about undoing The tampan's edits, but the editor has done approximately 150 edits for the 2013 Malaysia Super Series article alone.--MorrisIV (talk) 20:55, 3 March 2013 (UTC)Reply

Thank you for the clarification, I will be sure to have a look at that. I just saw that the World Curling Championship Web site http://wwcc2013.curlingevents.com/teams does have her listed now, along with the rest of the team, if you would like to go ahead an add it back in, I'll let you have the honor. Thx again.

2013 Canadian Mixed Doubles Curling Trials edit

Hey Earl! I noticed your edit on the infobox. That's the way winners of the world mixed doubles championships have been listed in the past, so I was just following that convention. It's acceptable if you consider that the "lead" plays the first (and last) stone and the "second" plays the "second stones." I'm not sure if you had another idea as to listing the winners in an infobox, but I thought that was a reasonable way. Prayerfortheworld (talk) 01:34, 18 March 2013 (UTC)Reply

True. Should we introduce new parameters to the infobox to account for that then? We need something like that when we document the worlds. Prayerfortheworld (talk) 01:42, 18 March 2013 (UTC)Reply
Sounds good to me, I'll take care of that. Prayerfortheworld (talk) 05:29, 18 March 2013 (UTC)Reply
Somewhat related question: should the Canadian/World Mixed Doubles medals be in the medal tables for curlers? I don't think we established anything for that in the article guidelines. Prayerfortheworld (talk) 07:53, 18 March 2013 (UTC)Reply

The things you learn while editing... edit

Hi Earl, it wasn't until your recent additions at Demographics of Ottawa that I finally clued in to what is obvious to many in Ontario – that the City of Ottawa's 2001 amalgamated boundaries are coincident with its census division (former regional municipality) boundaries, which is why/how the history growth of the city in its current boundaries can extend back to atleast 1981. It is unfortunate that the city's reference doesn't state that pre-amalgamation populations are based on the census division/former RM boundaries, leaving us to assume the 1901-1991 populations are based on the 2001-onward boundaries. I was able to validate the 1981-1991 numbers from StatCan. The next time I go to the library for a census research binge, I'll test the assumption for the 1901-1971 censuses and replace the city reference with StatCan corresponding references, just as I did for the population history of the city based on its former boundaries. Hwy43 (talk) 03:03, 19 March 2013 (UTC)Reply

And there I've learned yet another thing. Thanks for that. I'll eventually incorporate notes into the table explaining both of these things. Hwy43 (talk) 03:43, 19 March 2013 (UTC)Reply

Infobox curling medal templates edit

Hey Earl! I just noticed that there's a little bit of a problem in the order of the medal templates in the infobox. If we group the results by medal country/province (as it is in Kevin Martin (curler) and Cathy Overton-Clapham), the world juniors go before the nationals, even though the order is different in the order in the AG. By-elections edit

Whether it's in the electoral district's article or a separate article about the byelection is not the question. Under WP:BLP, no article about any election is not allowed to contain any biographical information at all about anyone who would not qualify as notable enough for their own separate article. That means no biographical sketches about unelected candidates, no offsite links to their own campaign webpages and on and so forth. You're allowed to add content about the election, if there's anything meaningful to say — but the article is not allowed to contain biographical information about the candidates. Bearcat (talk) 03:14, 2 August 2013 (UTC)Reply

Actually a lot of the candidate lists aren't okay either. They're certainly allowed to exist for handy reference's sake, but they're not supposed to contain biographical information (sourced or otherwise) about the candidates — rather, they're supposed to look more like Ontario Liberal Party candidates, 2011 Ontario provincial election, where the only information given about them is the stuff that's noted in the column headers. I'm aware that a lot of the older lists still do contain more extensive biographical information, but that's because editors haven't been keeping them clean as Wikipedia's rules about keeping information about non-notable people have tightened up — but the extended information is still unacceptable under contemporary rules, and those lists do still need to be stripped of identifying biographical information that would compromise the privacy of the people being listed. Bearcat (talk) 03:32, 2 August 2013 (UTC)Reply

It is important to understand that Wikipedia has had a lot of problems over the years with biographies of living people, so the rules for that type of content have had to be tightened up a lot — we now have to be extremely judicious about protecting people's privacy rights as much as possible. I know of at least one case where somebody actually did use a candidate's entry in one of the lists as a venue for grinding axes about a personal disagreement that had no encyclopedic relevance, for instance — so the potential for harm is why the rules about BLP content are much stricter and more rigid than you might have gotten used to in the past. vandalism in Lurs and Luristan page edit

Hi Earl Andrew

"HistoryofIran" user vandalism in Lurs and Luristan page. He remove All Historical images and "Lur people of iran" map no valid reason. I ask you to stop doing this "HistoryofIran" user.

Thank youSetenlyacc (talk) 05:45, 19 September 2013 (UTC)Reply

I was considering taking both of them to ANI. The articles they are edit-warring on are a mess. However, I discovered that Setenlyacc ignored my warnings about copyvio and, as I did earlier with HistoryofIran, I have blocked him indefinitely which means he is blocked until we can be sure he understands our copyvio policy and can edit it without breaking it. Fair Vote Canada edit

Hi Earl,

I noticed you contributed to the article for Democracy Day. I'm president of the NCR chapter of Fair Vote Canada and I live in Little Italy as well. I was wondering if you'd be interested in chatting over a beer a Pubwells or Pub Italia. You can use my talk page or better yet, write to me at julien.lamarche@gmail.com

Says who? edit

Talk:Alberta municipal elections, 2010. 117Avenue (talk) 04:20, 22 October 2013 (UTC)Reply

What makes Alberta so special that it can invent thresholds for its municipal election articles? For the Ontario municipal elections, 2010 we managed to include results for every single municipality in the province. -- Earl Andrew - talk 04:25, 22 October 2013 (UTC)Reply
Easy now. Both figures are arbitrary. Can't speak for 117Avenue, but I didn't look at other provinces during the discussion in 2010. AGF. It is not about Alberta being "special". Hwy43 (talk) 04:41, 22 October 2013 (UTC)Reply

Olga Jarkova edit

Dear Earl, why did you delete my edit, connected with graduating University? It's a great reason to be proud of it. I think it's justified enough, and such fact deserves to be mentioned. Moreover, there are several sources, which confirm she is alumni of MITHT. In what problem consists in? Nikolas Sharp (talk) 06:36, 10 November 2013 (UTC)Reply
