Template:Infobox Network

edit

Hi. I've restored your version of the code for the template header, so that it appears within the infobox--as is standard--rather than above it. This, and adding a couple optional info lines, has brought me to the limits of my coding ability. Request: Is it possible to further modify the code, so an editor has the option of employing the infobox without using a header at all? (See, for example, the use of Infobox Biography in Henry Cowell.) When I attempt this with Infobox Network (that is, either erasing the "name" line or leaving it blank, under any of the recent iterations of the header code), it leaves a little rogue vertical mark in the linespace above the logo image, insteading of eliminating the linespace altogether. (Test, for example, in Mutual Broadcasting System, the article I'm currently working on.) Thanks very much. Best, Dan—DCGeist 01:41, 12 January 2007 (UTC)Reply

I do know how to use it. All it does is every time the page gets "purged" or "reloaded", the quote changes. The currently used quote is the last one in the WikiQuote collection.--Wolf talk | हिन्दी | বাংলা 11:19, 5 May 2007 (UTC)Reply

Greater Manchester dynamic map

edit

Hi, I'm working on a fresh dynamic map. Are there any requirements for this (resolution, size, format etc) that you have so that it will be compatible?

Are their any preferences in colours and features? Do we want major roads/motorways and/or rivers included? Is there a standard? Hope you can help, Jhamez84 21:47, 21 February 2007 (UTC)Reply

If you could give me some feedback for Image:Greater Manchester outline map v3.png as a possibility I would be very grateful.
I have the master copy which has each feature stored as a layer which have have instant colour changes or be made to disappear. Any issues, and I can easily address them for you. Thanks, Jhamez84 01:30, 22 February 2007 (UTC)Reply
Hi! Thank you for the feedback! The lines you refer to are actually motorways and not railways! That this wasn't clear straight away concerns me a little - but not sure exactly how to make the distinction clearer. If you have any ideas...? Glad you like it however. Jhamez84 08:33, 22 February 2007 (UTC)Reply

Hi again. I've just got back from a busy day so apologies for any delay. I'll spend some time this eve working on the suggestions you and the other users have made - they seem simple things to correct.
I'd be happy to produce some other maps yes! I'm not a proffessional map maker by anymeans, but have enough graphic design skill to put one together. Another user User:Ddstretch has raised a suggestion about changing the actual pointer, perhaps to something with a crosshair? Might be worth considering. I'll get back to you once I've looked at making the motorways a little clearer (I also forgot a stretch of motorway which exists in central Manchester which I need to include). Jhamez84 19:17, 22 February 2007 (UTC)Reply

Map is ready. Found at Image:Greater Manchester outline map.png. I think I've addressed all the issues now. Would love to see it in action next! Jhamez84 20:02, 22 February 2007 (UTC)Reply

I'd be more than happy to help! With a bit of luck I will start it tomorrow for you. It would be nice if each city region's map was of a simillar style, but wouldn't want a monopoly on this!!! London's does need a little work like you say however - shouldn't take me too long. May even produce one for our third city (!)... Jhamez84 00:47, 25 February 2007 (UTC)Reply
Map redrawn and replaced on Wikicommons - any mistakes or issues, don't hesitate to contact me and I'll try to fix things! Hope the map is well received. Jhamez84 19:25, 25 February 2007 (UTC)Reply
I should add it is not as precise as the Greater Manchester map (where the urban areas are drawn tightly) as this not only effects the image size, but I've struggled to find quality source material with which to reference the exact urban boundaries - may be an issue, but see what you think first! re: Old Trafford (cricket ground)

edit

Hi, you recently closed a move-article request suggesting that you did not see consensus. While I agree that the page makes it extremely unclear that consensus has been reached, the issues concerned with the move were resolved as illustrated by the following diffs: diff 1 and diff 2. The previously conflicting parties - myself and User:TerriersFan - have been awaiting admin assistance in moving this page to its correct title of Old Trafford Cricket Ground for some time now, as illustrated by talk-page discussions (1, 2). We would appreciate it if you saved us the hastle of relisting just because of unclarities on the talk page.

Your reversion of my Arctic Monkeys EP chronology changes

edit

I'm curious why you reverted my changes ([1] and [2]) to the Arctic Monkeys EP pages. Is there some precedent for including singles in album chronologies? I can't recall ever having seen that anywhere else. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by PEJL (talkcontribs) 05:45, 15 March 2007 (UTC).Reply

Quoting DJR's reply here: I'm not sure about precendent, but there has been a long established consensus that EPs are part of the singles chronology, not albums, at least in the case of Arctic Monkeys. DJR (T) 08:30, 15 March 2007 (UTC)
I see. AFAICT EPs are part of album chronologies rather than singles chronologies for at least a vast majority of artists. (Like I said, I've never seen this before, and I've edited hundreds of album pages.) This may simply be because EPs use album infoboxes while singles don't. I'd suggest trying to get this anomaly formalized at Wikipedia:WikiProject Albums as a valid option. --PEJL 13:24, 15 March 2007 (UTC)Reply
The nature of EPs varies from artist to artist - many are indeed just short albums. However, releases such as Five Minutes with the Arctic Monkeys have much more in common with a single than an album, and hence the situation with Arctic Monkeys. I don't think there's any need for formalisation - I frankly think it is better left slightly open for interpretation. DJR (T) 18:51, 15 March 2007 (UTC)Reply

Removal of unnecessary paragraphs from Tonbridge

edit

Hi Djr xi, noticed you made an edit to the Tonbridge article just to remove some unnecessary line breaks. Just a warning that I've seen some editors get really shirty with people who edit articles just to do that, especially if it doesn't change the appearance of the article. I think it's because it adds unnecessary history to the article and puts extra load on the server, and some people on Wiki seem to just like jumping up and down in an angry manner a lot at the tiniest provocation - so be careful! Proposal for complete deletion of section GAWC 1999 Edition [3] !

edit

Reasons: a) outdated study published 8 years ago (conducted even earlier) b) 2004 Edition is available and reflects the current state c) presenting two editions is no extra information value d) The GAWC 1999 studies in general pretends to define a status of major cities but only focuses economic data. This is misleading and already resulted in a widespread citation within Wikipedia major city articles. Proposal: If there are no multiple serious arguments for keeping it, the section should be deleted within the next 7 days. all the best Lear 21 15:18, 9 June 2007 (UTC)Reply

And one more question...don't get me wrong here but on whose side are you indian? I actually find it very amusing when people from different countries get married. I don't know... but you just like to see two people who come from different locations, different cultures and language and different everything to get married and live together under the same roof. Hey, well done for all the work you did adding up-to-date endowment figures to all the college pages. I was wondering if they would perhaps be better placed in the wonderful infoboxes (that I believe you designed?), since it is a relevant stat common to all colleges, and indeed that is where the information is on the University's page, rather than at the end of the lead paragraph. Invitation to Wikipedia meetup in London

Date: 13:00 onwards, Sunday 10 August 2008

Venue: Penderel's Oak pub, Holborn WC1 map

More information: Wikipedia:Meetup/London 12

Hello,

I noticed that you have listed yourself as a Wikipedian in London, so I thought you might like to come to one of our monthly social meetups. The next one is going to be on Sunday 10 August, which might well be rather short notice, but if you can't come this time, we try to have one every second Sunday of the month.

If you haven't been before, these meetups are mainly casual social events for Wikipedia enthusiasts in which we chat about Wikipedia and any other topics we fancy. It's a great way to meet some very keen Wikipedians, but we'd also love for you to come along if you're interested in finding out more about Wikipedia, other Wikimedia projects, or other collaborative wiki projects too.

The location is a pub that is quite quiet and family friendly on a Sunday lunchtime, so hopefully younger Wikipedians will also feel welcome and safe. Alcohol consumption is certainly not required!

Although the meetups are popular, many UK-based editors still don't know about them. It would be great to welcome some fresh faces, so I hope you can come along.

Yours,

James F. (talk) 09:27, 3 August 2008 (UTC)Reply

Motto of the day

edit

Hello, I notice you're using one of the {{motd}} templates, run by Wikipedia:Motto of the day. You may have noticed that some of the mottos recently have been followed by a date from 2006, or on occasion simply "Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia". The reason for this is that Motto of the day is in some very serious need of help. Participation in the project, which has never been especially high, has dropped considerably over this past summer, to the point we have had several days where no motto was scheduled to appear at all. Over the past several weeks, I've been the only editor scheduling mottos at all, but there aren't enough comments on some of these mottos to justify their use. If we do not get some help - and soon - your daily mottos will stop. In order for us to continue updating these templates for you, we need your help.

When you get a chance between your normal editing, could you stop by our nominations page and leave a few comments on some of the mottos there, especially those that do not have any comments yet? This works very simply; you read a motto, decide whether or not you like it, and post your opinion just below the motto. That's it - no experience required, just an idea of what you personally like and what you feel reflects Wikipedia and its community. If you do have past experience with the project, then please close some of the older nominations once they've got a decent consensus going. There are directions on the nominations page on how to do this.

If you have any questions, please let me know, or post on the project's talk page. I'm looking forward to reading your comments on the suggested mottos, and any additional suggestions you'd like to make. Until then, happy editing! Hersfold (t/a/c) 01:40, 4 September 2008 (UTC)Reply

Linking months

Hey Djr, perhaps you were not aware of the recent change to the manual of style, but it is no longer suggested to link months, and it does not affect how others see them displayed any longer. See Wikipedia:CONTEXT#Dates, Wikipedia:MOSNUM#Date_autoformatting, and the discussion about linking dates for autoformatting purposes here. I noticed that you mentioned the reason you were linking months here as " link dates to enable user date preferences to work", and since the change is pretty recent, I thought perhaps you didn't know about it, as I only just found out myself. :) ArielGold 12:56, 5 November 2008 (UTC)Reply

Unspecified source for Image:CannonSt.gif

edit

Thanks for uploading Image:CannonSt.gif. I noticed that the file's description page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If you did not create this file yourself, then you will need to specify the owner of the copyright. If you obtained it from a website, then a link to the website from which it was taken, together with a restatement of that website's terms of use of its content, is usually sufficient information. However, if the copyright holder is different from the website's publisher, then their copyright should also be acknowledged.

As well as adding the source, please add a proper copyright licensing tag if the file doesn't have one already. If you created/took the picture, audio, or video then the {{GFDL-self}} tag can be used to release it under the GFDL. Thanks for uploading Image:Euston logo.gif.

If you believe the media meets the criteria at Wikipedia:Fair use, use a tag such as {{non-free fair use in|article name}} or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:Image copyright tags#Fair use. See Wikipedia:Image copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.

If you have uploaded other files, consider checking that you have specified their source and tagged them, too. You can find a list of files you have uploaded by following this link. Unsourced and untagged images may be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If the image is copyrighted under a non-free license (per Wikipedia:Fair use) then the image will be deleted 48 hours after 20:36, 29 June 2007 (UTC). If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. ACBestMy ContributionsAutograph Book 20:36, 29 June 2007 (UTC)Reply

Fair use rationale for Image:Travelers logo new.jpg

Thanks for uploading or contributing to Image:Travelers logo new.jpg. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is not a suitable explanation or rationale as to why each specific use in Wikipedia constitutes fair use. Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale.

If you have uploaded other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on those pages too. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that any non-free media lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. NOTE: once you correct this, please remove the tag from the image's page. Orphaned non-free media (Image:Monkeys on sofa.jpg)

edit

Thanks for uploading Image:Monkeys on sofa.jpg. The media description page currently specifies that it is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, it is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the media was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that media for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).

If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that all non-free media not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. BetacommandBot 23:14, 11 October 2007 (UTC)Reply

Disputed fair use rationale for Image:Whothefarethearcticmonkeyspromo.jpg

edit

Thanks for uploading Image:Whothefarethearcticmonkeyspromo.jpg. However, there is a concern that the rationale you have provided for using this image under "fair use" may be invalid. Please read the instructions at Wikipedia:Non-free content carefully, then go to the image description page and clarify why you think the image qualifies for fair use. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to ensure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

If it is determined that the image does not qualify under fair use, it will be deleted within a couple of days according to our criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the media copyright questions page. Thank you.BetacommandBot (talk) 07:50, 15 January 2008 (UTC)Reply

Orphaned non-free media (Image:Citi.png)

edit

Thanks for uploading Image:Citi.png.

Thank you. BJBot (talk) 12:05, 3 May 2008 (UTC)Reply
