@Dasho Karma Ura: Your edits are not unwelcome but they are problematic as they provide uncited information, do not adhere to Wikipedia standards of formatting and manual of style, and additionally you are not coming to discuss your edits when challenged, merely replacing them while marking them "minor", which they are most certainly not. I urge you to go to the teahouse and learn some about editing Wikipedia and then take your concerns to the talk pages. Ogress smash! 06:47, 14 July 2015 (UTC)Reply

Could you help me? edit

Dear @TheRedPenOfDoom:,

I will share the articles that I want to edit with you before saving the changes. Could you help me check if I have made mistakes in the style and formatting?

Dasho Karma Ura (talk) 05:37, 15 July 2015 (UTC)Reply

You would probably have a better experience with someone from Wikipedia:Adopt-a-user who is good at this type of thing. -- TRPoD aka The Red Pen of Doom 05:48, 15 July 2015 (UTC)Reply

But @TheRedPenOfDoom:, that page says that there is an obligation for the the user to contribute in the Wikipedia community after the article is created and not for a user who wants to create/edit article just once and not stay long term. I am not very sure if that is the right platform for me to seek help. Anyway, I would like to thank you for your time and guidance thus far. I don't feel very confident today because, yesterday when I edited the articles, I checked the preview and made sure that my formatting had no mistake but I still received notification of some braces or brackets being unpaired. I didn't see them though.

Dasho Karma Ura (talk) 05:59, 15 July 2015 (UTC)Reply

Do not worry too much about the bracket notifications. BracketBot is just a computer program that tries to work out if there is a problem with brackets. Sometimes BracketBot correctly identifies a problem, but sometimes BracketBot makes a mistake and there is not actually a problem at all. And usually other editors will try to help fix the problem too. Arthur goes shopping (talk) 06:34, 15 July 2015 (UTC)Reply
Yes, you cannot really "break" anything in an article that cannot be fixed in a few clicks. -- TRPoD aka The Red Pen of Doom 06:38, 15 July 2015 (UTC)Reply

Help for checking the article on Desi Jigme Namgyel edit

Dear @Arthur goes shopping:

Please find below the article on Desi Jigme Namgyel--this is the text that the Centre for Bhutan Studies and GNH Research would like to put in place of the existing one.

I would like to take our help in checking if the formatting and styling are correct. Is there a way to ensure that others don't edit/make changes to the text once we have edited them? Similarly, we would like to edit wikipedia entries on the first, second, third and fourth kings of Bhutan.

I understand that this may not be the right protocol to get in touch for help, but I thought it is easier this way -- to share the article itself through my talk page.

Many thanks, Dasho Karma Ura (talk) 04:27, 16 July 2015 (UTC)Reply

Dear @Arthur goes shopping:

I edited the article on Jigme Namgyal as you suggested. Please check.

DESI JIGME NAMGYEL edit

Marriage edit

Desi Jigme Namgyel was born in 1825 [1] and died in 1881. He was an outstanding military commander, with a magnetic personality and decisive bent of mind. The qualities of loyalty, bravery, integrity and risk-taking were crucial factors in the rise of Jigme Namgyel. Desi Jigme Namgyel was from Kurtoe Dungkar, from where the ancestry of Wangchuck dynasty originates. [2] He was a descendent of Kheydrup Kuenga Wangpo, the son of Pema Lingpa (1450-1521) and Kheydrup’s consort, who was a descendant of terton Guru Choewang (1212-1270). [2] Around 1846, he joined the Tongsa administration that governed eastern Bhutan, which consisted then of the Assam Duars. He rose rapidly through the ranks to become the Tongsa Penlop in 1853. While he was a high official of Tongsa, Jigme Namgyel married Pem Choki, the daughter of Tongsa Penlop Tamzhing Choeje, Ugyen Phuntsho. His marriage to Pem Choki further enhanced Jigme Namgyel’s noble lineage. The ancestry of Jigme Namgyel’s wife also went back to Pema Lingpa as she was the daughter of Tamzhing Choeje. [2]

The Raven Crown edit

While Jigme Namgyel was the Zimpon (Chamberlain) of Tongsa, he met his root Lama, Jangchub Tsundru (1817-1856).[3] Lama Jangchub Tsundru had a significant influence on him as a spiritual companion. The Lama designed the sacred Raven Crown for Jigme Namgyel. The Raven Crown has symbolized the Kings of Bhutan since then. [4]

The Duar Wars 1864-65 edit

As the Tongsa Penlop, from 1853 to 1870, Jigme Namgyel was concerned about the festering tension between British India and Bhutan over the Assam and Bengal Duars, which were the most fertile part of Bhutan in those days. For economic reason, and to secure the borders of their empire, the British attempted to extend their boundaries up to the foothills of Bhutan. The Assam Duars were annexed in 1841 although a formal treaty ceding it did not take place until 1865. In 1864, the British unilaterally declared that, in addition to the Assam Duars that were already annexed, the Bengal Duars would be annexed permanently. Following this, the British sent forces to occupy vital passes into Bhutan such as Deothang, Sidli and Buxa. Jigme Namgyel launched a counter offensive with about 5000 men and succeeded in dislodging the British Imperial Force at Deothang. [5] He was successful in the January and February 1865 attacks on the British outpost in Deothang. However, later that year Bhutan was forced to sign the Treaty of Sinchula, 1865. The treaty brought stability to the relationship between the two countries. The Duars were incorporated permanently into the British Empire and an annual subsidy of Rs 50,000 to Bhutan was instituted from that year. [5]

Three Legacies of Desi Jigme Namgyel edit

The most important contribution Desi Jigme Namgyel made was the ushering of peace, through a reduction of local feuds among the top leadership by gradually unifying the state over three decades, from 1850s to 1870s. The reduction of internal conflicts, especially after 1878, allowed for laying the foundation of the monarchy that in turn brought a peaceful era in Bhutan. [2] In terms of external relationship, especially with British India, Desi Jigme Namgyel left an identifiable centre of power that made it possible for treaties to be revised constructively and foreign relationships to be improved over the course of time. His son, the first King of Bhutan, Ugyen Wangchuck amply fulfilled that role later on. After Jigme Namgyel’s reign, foreign relations could be conducted in a systematic and co-ordinated way, because the fragmentation of power among the top leadership could be avoided. The Treaty of Sinchula, 1865, which went back to Jigme Namgyel’s time, became the crucial, guiding bilateral legal instrument between Bhutan and British India and later, Independent India. It was updated and revised in 1910, 1949, and 2007.[6] Jigme Namgyel made not only political but architectural impacts. He restored the Tongsa Dzong, and built Sangwa Duepa temple in it. He founded the Wangdicholing Palace in Choekhor valley in 1856. Wangdicholing palace was the main residence of the Royal Family from Desi Jigme Namgyel’s time to that of the Crown Prince Jigme Dorji Wangchuck (1929-1972). It was the political epicentre of the country for over a century, from the late 1850s to the early 1950s. [1]

Passing Away edit

In 1881, Desi Jigme Namgyel passed away, aged 57, at Semtokha dzong (first built in 1629). His 21 year-old son, then the Paro Penlop, Ugyen Wangchuck (1862-1926), conducted the grandest funeral Bhutan had ever seen for his father. [7]

No, there is no way to prevent others from making changes to the article. Wikipedia is the encyclopedia anyone can edit.
My understanding is that you have two objectives at present:
  1. For the article Jigme Namgyal (Bhutan) to be renamed Desi Jigme Namgyel
  2. For its content to be replaced with the text you have provided
Unfortunately, the rename is not possible. I believe "Desi" is an honorific, and in general Wikipedia does not include those in article titles. (Or in article text.)
Wholesale replacement of the existing article content with your proposed text is also impossible. Promotional language like "a magnetic personality and decisive bent of mind" is not suitable for a neutral encyclopedia article.
However, you do have some sources that look more recent that the ones used in the existing article, so I suggest that you add sourced facts from these sources to the existing article, instead of trying to replace the whole thing in one go.
Do be aware that providing references to your own Centre's publications as sources, may be viewed as a conflict of interest or promotional editing, so you may need to read Wikipedia:Conflict of interest. Arthur goes shopping (talk) 10:39, 16 July 2015 (UTC)Reply
