Page protection

Any article featured on the front page obviously gets more visits than usual. Yesterday it was the turn of Barn owl to be TFA. During the day it had 14 events of vandalism, admittedly some of these were from one persistent offender, and three hours before it was due to be replaced, was protected by being restricted to "Require autoconfirmed or confirmed access". Would it not be useful to protect TFAs in this way automatically for the day they are featured? Cwmhiraeth (talk) 11:08, 3 July 2016 (UTC)

You can find the discussion at WP:PEREN. I try to stay neutral in these things. - Dank (push to talk) 11:21, 3 July 2016 (UTC)
Cwmhiraeth, I checked the history. The second act of similar vandalism happened at 06:00, but the page wasn't semi-protected until 17:54, after vandalism all day long. We ought to be able to make some headway with that problem, I'll ask at WT:TFA (later today). - Dank (push to talk) 14:33, 3 July 2016 (UTC)
Thanks. Cwmhiraeth (talk) 16:58, 3 July 2016 (UTC)

Great! Just added a 150th birthday to that list. It's on Aug 5th, which is coincidentally, the next date to be filled in the queue. --Dweller (talk) Become old fashioned! 12:08, 20 July 2016 (UTC)

Charity Shield FA

Hi Dank, thanks for the notification. Saw the nomination via the ping, just didn't get round to commenting as I forgot about it. Lemonade51 (talk) 23:33, 22 July 2016 (UTC)

How does it look now? Is either "Manchester" or "United" acceptable on second mention for Manchester United? (I notice that "United" is occasionally used in Manchester United.) - Dank (push to talk) 23:36, 22 July 2016 (UTC)
Dweller, thoughts? I'm uncomfortable with writing out "Manchester United" so many times in such a short space. - Dank (push to talk) 23:45, 22 July 2016 (UTC)
Changed it to "United", the common way to address them. Manchester has two football clubs, so one is colloquially shorted to United, the other City. Other clubs with United in their title (Leeds United, Newcastle United, etc) are just referred to by the place name because they are one-city/town football clubs. Hope that's cleared it up, Lemonade51 (talk) 23:46, 22 July 2016 (UTC)
You can also use MUFC. ···日本穣 · 投稿 · Talk to Nihonjoe · Join WP Japan! 23:48, 22 July 2016 (UTC)
Thanks Joe, went with "United". Done. - Dank (push to talk) 00:14, 23 July 2016 (UTC)

Late-to-the-party support for "United". "MUFC" is a bit fanziney for an encyclopedia though. --Dweller (talk) Become old fashioned! 21:55, 23 July 2016 (UTC)

Trott

Great stuff, but I don't think we can call him good-natured, as it's a bit POVish. What was wrong with humorous? --Dweller (talk) Become old fashioned! 15:35, 27 July 2016 (UTC)

Like "amusing", it's more ambiguous than I'm comfortable with. - Dank (push to talk) 16:31, 27 July 2016 (UTC)
Source 2 calls him "good-humoured". We could put the quote in the article and then use it? --Dweller (talk) Become old fashioned! 16:58, 27 July 2016 (UTC)
"good-humoured" works, I think. - Dank (push to talk) 17:03, 27 July 2016 (UTC)

Thanks. Have comparatively minor surgery scheduled Friday morning.

Glad to hear it's only minor, but surgery is surgery. I'm not in NC right now but please let me know if I can help with anything. Wishing you the best, old friend. Ed [talk] [majestic titan] 03:44, 29 July 2016 (UTC)
C'mom, he's not that old... ;-) Seriously though, take care Dan and if you need any TFA blurbs looked at, let me know... Cheers, Ian Rose (talk) 05:09, 29 July 2016 (UTC)
Old only in the sense that I've known him for many years now. :-) Ed [talk] [majestic titan] 06:52, 29 July 2016 (UTC)
Best wishes for your recovery! Nothing here is really important, --Gerda Arendt (talk) 06:24, 29 July 2016 (UTC)
That comment above was John's, he forgot to sign. So far so good, I'm headed into surgery now to remove my gallbladder. I'm lucky, all things considered. - Dank (push to talk) 14:11, 29 July 2016 (UTC)
Quick update: for someone with a lot of holes in him, I'm doing surprisingly well, and the pain level has dropped considerably. Still on oxygen, still have the problem that nothing has been going in or out for 2.5 days (except pills and piss), so there are more hurdles ahead, but for now, all is well, and they don't see any long-term problems at the moment. I wish they had caught this sooner ... I had a huge gallstone and and huge gallbladder from all the scar tissue ... but that's water under the bridge. Hope to be back in a few days. It looks like ERRORS is clear for the moment, and I'll check in at least once a day. Thanks for all the support and offers of help, guys. It feels great. - Dank (push to talk) 11:15, 30 July 2016 (UTC)
Good to hear you're doing well mate -- keyhole was it? Cheers, Ian Rose (talk) 11:22, 30 July 2016 (UTC)
Sort of ... the gallstone was close to golf-ball sized, so they had to make a big incision to get it and the gallbladder out, and they had to fit me with a drainage tube. And they threw in an umbilical hernia operation while they were in the neighborhood. But I just talked with the doctor and he said I might be able to go home today. - Dank (push to talk) 12:02, 30 July 2016 (UTC)
Now they're saying it's likely i'll be discharged within the next few hours. I've had broth and I'm mobile. With a little luck, I should be able to handle my wikiwork. Thanks for the kind offers of help. - Dank (push to talk) 16:51, 30 July 2016 (UTC)

Same from me, I'm super happy to hear that you're doing alright. Take your time and let yourself heal; tell John that he needs to baby you. :-D Ed [talk] [majestic titan] 05:33, 31 July 2016 (UTC)
Ditto; feel better soon. Best wishes, Nikkimaria (talk) 13:56, 31 July 2016 (UTC)

Thanks Ed, TRM, Hchc, Ian, Gerda, soetermans, and Nikki. I'm doing incredibly well today ... I was strong enough to take a shower and do some self-care-giving (although my partner John is doing a massively competent job with that). There's not much pain, weakness or fever, and most of the risk is gone. I could still get an infection in the hole they poked in my side for the drainage tube, but there's not much drainage so that's probably coming out in a few days. I'm probably out of the woods. I've been sweating and in pain off and on for 8 months ... turned out to be gallbladder stones and an infection that kept getting misdiagnosed, in part because the doctors and I thought it was more likely diverticulitis or GERD-related gastritis, since that's what I had before. With this new information, we have to recalculate, but there's a good chance that i'll be heaving a big sigh of relief at the end of this bout ... my other problems are the kind that sometimes can't be fixed, but a bad gallbladder can be (and was) removed, and that's the end of that problem. And maybe the other problems aren't problems any more, after all. - Dank (push to talk) 14:54, 31 July 2016 (UTC)

Happy sounds over here. Glad to hear. :-) Ed [talk] [majestic titan] 21:57, 31 July 2016 (UTC)

Thanks for your help with the intro in Wytheville Raid. I changed it a little, but overall it is an improvement. I plan to add a picture of Walker Mountain in a couple of months, and then nominate for good article. Thanks again. TwoScars (talk) 12:44, 23 August 2016 (UTC)

As an incubator tier task force, we reached 4 active members and 1 sporadic, with one that is retired but may return, I followed the instructions of Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Military history/Coordinators and made all of the necessary categories, an infobox and the templates, I was wondering who I should ask to include us in the talk page template, I have already added the baseline of |Roman= to the template, but have not touched the underlying code to make it work. Thanks. Iazyges (talk) 23:22, 25 August 2016 (UTC)

I'm not sure actually. Please post this message at WT:MIL; we'll all be very happy to see your work. - Dank (push to talk) 23:24, 25 August 2016 (UTC)

Small TFA edit

Hey Dank, I made a small copyedit to Wikipedia:Today's featured article/August 28, 2016—I hope that's alright, but please feel free to revert. :-) Ed [talk] [majestic titan] 18:32, 28 August 2016 (UTC)

No problem with that. Copyeditors and linguists say to push the important, complicated or heavy bits to the end of the sentence, but dates are (strangely) an exception to that rule, and either order works. - Dank (push to talk) 18:46, 28 August 2016 (UTC)
Yeah, that was my basic idea—the dates were less important than the positions. :-) Hope post-op is/went well! Ed [talk] [majestic titan] 19:01, 28 August 2016 (UTC)
Everything seems to have wound up in the right place. - Dank (push to talk) 19:06, 28 August 2016 (UTC)

FAC voluntary mentoring scheme

During a recent lengthy discussion on the WP:FAC talkpage, several ideas were put forward as to how this procedure could be improved, particularly in making it more user-friendly towards first-time nominees. The promotion rate for first-timers at FAC is depressingly low – around 16 percent – which is a cause for concern. To help remedy this, Mike Christie and I, with the co-operation of the FAC coordinators, have devised a voluntary mentoring scheme, in which newcomers will guided by more experienced editors through the stages of preparation and submission of their articles. The general format of the scheme is explained in more detail on Wikipedia: Mentoring for FAC, which also includes a list of editors who have indicated that they are prepared to act as mentors.

Would you be prepared to take on this role occasionally? If so, please add your name to the list. By doing so you incur no obligation; it will be entirely for you to decide how often and on which articles you want to act in this capacity. We anticipate that the scheme will have a trial run for a few months before we appraise its effectiveness. Your participation will be most welcome. Brianboulton (talk) 17:05, 29 August 2016 (UTC)

I did consider adding my name, but my focus is copyediting. I'd be more useful if I could look over current collaborations and pick the ones where my copyediting would be helpful, as I do at WP:FAC. - Dank (push to talk) 17:31, 29 August 2016 (UTC)
