Please review WP:PROMO and WP:SPAM. Also WP:BALASP. Wikipedia may not be used promotionally. Thousands, or tens of thousands of G&S repertory, opera and theatre companies, both professional and amateur, have produced the G&S operas over the past 150 years, starting with the D'Oyly Carte Opera Company and J. C. Williamson's company, on Broadway, in the West End and on film and TV productions, and continuing today with annual productions of numerous companies, including the National Gilbert & Sullivan Opera Company, NYGASP and many other notable companies. Videos of this local New Zealand company may not be promoted in the Wikipedia articles this way. However, if you have independent news articles from major news sources that review and discuss the fact that this company produced all the extant G&S operas in New Zealand, that could be cited extremely briefly in the Gilbert and Sullivan article's Legacy section as an example of a company that has done this (there have been many!) All the best, -- Ssilvers (talk) 15:06, 23 January 2022 (UTC)
- It is certain that many companies have produced Gilbert and Sullivan's operas. However, almost none of them have released videos of them under a Creative Commons license. I have not chosen the RAGSPT videos out of self-promotion (I had no involvement in the company) nor future promotion (it no longer exists), but because they are the only (as far as I know --- if there are others, please tell me!) recordings of the operas released under a Creative Commons license. Since Wikipedia is a CC-licensed project and a sister project of Commons, it is surely relevant to link to performances which are actually free cultural works and not just gratis, and which are available on Commons. In fact, due to the CLASSICS act, it is likely that many of the newer recordings (e.g. 1960 DOC Pinafore) will need to be removed from Commons. RAGSPT recordings provide a replacement that's freely licensed. If there were other companies who were to make their recordings available under an appropriate license too, of course they could also be used. At the very least some performances or clips should be linked where available, as is already the case for audio clips on many articles (even if many of the clips will need to be removed due to the CLASSICS act granting pre-'72 recordings US federal protection). I disagree that these recordings are noteworthy enough to be displayed in the article. However, if you wish to press the point, open a discussion on the appropriate article Talk page(s). I doubt you will find others who work on the G&S articles interested in adding these videos to the articles. Even if you did not INTEND to add these promotionally, the EFFECT of adding them is promotional. Also, again, see WP:SPAM and WP:BALASP. -- Ssilvers (talk) 00:48, 24 January 2022 (UTC)
