Orphaned non-free media (Image:Hiram Clock Logo.jpg) edit

Thanks for uploading Image:Hiram Clock Logo.jpg. The media description page currently specifies that it is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, it is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the media was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that media for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).

If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that all non-free media not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. BJBot (talk) 12:21, 20 March 2008 (UTC)Reply

Image permission problem with Image:Mahan.jpg edit

Image Copyright problem

Thanks for uploading Image:Mahan.jpg. I noticed that while you provided a valid copyright licensing tag, there is no proof that the creator of the image (or other media file) agreed to license it under the given license.

If you created this media entirely yourself but have previously published it elsewhere (especially online), please either

  • make a note permitting reuse under the GFDL or another acceptable free license (see this list) at the site of the original publication; or
  • Send an email from an address associated with the original publication to permissions-en@wikimedia.org, stating your ownership of the material and your intention to publish it under a free license. You can find a sample permission letter here.

If you did not create it entirely yourself, please ask the person who created the image to take one of the two steps listed above, or if the owner of the image has already given their permission to you via email, please forward that email to permissions-en@wikimedia.org.

If you believe the media meets the criteria at Wikipedia:Non-free content, use a tag such as {{non-free fair use in|article name}} or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:Image copyright tags#Fair use, and add a rationale justifying the image's use on the article or articles where it is included. See Wikipedia:Image copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.

If you have uploaded other files, consider checking that you have provided evidence that their copyright owners have agreed to license their works under the tags you supplied, too. You can find a list of files you have uploaded by following this link. Images lacking evidence of permission may be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. J Milburn (talk) 12:02, 29 March 2009 (UTC)Reply

HC edit

Leaving an editor passive-agressive comments is never productive and removes the chance for good collaboration. You started off by claiming you appreciate my desire to improve the article but then, amazingly, proceeded to question whether that desire is genuine and to call me arrogant (twice). You ended by indicating that you would revert my edits, which you did immediately, instead of having the courtesy to wait for a reply. I would have been happy to discuss the matter with you, but your inappropriate behavior and actions eliminated that possibility. For the record, just because content is accurate and sourced, doesn't necessarily mean that it is encylopedic; all content must be reliably sourced, neutral, and, most importantly, worthy of inclusion. Detailed descriptions of each Center of Distinction is not worthy of inclusion. Readers can simply link to the provided source if they are interested in the minutia. In terms of images, there are too many in the article as it is. Having 13 photos in such a relatively short article is overkill. Articles are not to be used as a respository for images. Also, your editing history makes clear that you are a single-purpose account; if you have a conflict of interest it is expected that you follow the relevant guidelines with regard to editing the article. Finally, you should always sign your comments. Because of your violation of civility guidelines, I will ask that you not post on my talk page again. --76.189.106.37 (talk) 07:13, 18 January 2013 (UTC)Reply

Conflict at Hiram College edit

Hi, Ctva08. User:76.189.106.37 has asked me to adjudicate the conflict between the two of you about Hiram College, see my talkpage here. I'm hesitant to do that; I think the two of you should be able to work these things out on the article's talkpage. That, rather than user talkpages, is the appropriate place for such discussion. Also, while I realize that both of you are feeling frustrated, it would be nice to see both of you make an effort to keep a more pleasant tone towards each other. It's more likely to be persuasive. If you can't come to some resolution, Wikipedia:Dispute resolution would be the next step.

However, having read your posts on 76.189's talkpage, I'll make the general point that it's a mistake to conflate "accurate" and "encyclopedic". There's lots and lots of stuff that's both true and sourced, but isn't notable, or balanced, or of enough general interest, to be encyclopedic. Some of the details in Hiram College are definitely of this nature. There's also some overly promotional language—I have no idea who added it, perhaps it's been there for donkey's years—and I've just started a bit of a cleanup in this respect. I haven't really considered the images — certainly there are many of them — but, again, I feel you should be able to work it out. Please don't simply revert 76.189.106.37's changes, but take them to Talk.

Since you haven't edited any other article than Hiram College, may I ask if you have any connection with the college? Is it your only interest on Wikipedia? Bishonen | talk 22:21, 19 January 2013 (UTC).Reply

Hello, Bishonen. User:76.189.106.37 seems to think they have the authority to revert my edits without consulting me, but then somehow they perceive it as an insult when I do the same back to them. It always amazes me how some people manage such a disconnect between their own actions and those they expect from others. As far as my connection to the College, I may have had some connection in the past, but if this would be perceived as a conflict of interest that would render my contributions less valuable, then I may not have. I only started making minor edits to this article several years ago when I found it in dire need of work to combat vandalism and neglect that had rendered it a disgrace, in my opinion. I am just a humble contributor that has tried to clean it up and add factual and relevant information, all from what I hope has been a relatively objective viewpoint. User:76.189.106.37 seems obsessed with analyzing my contributions under the microscope, and then finding some wikipedia rule that, when stretched, twisted, or otherwise applied in an extreme manner, might justify their removal of my work. I would like to know what connection, presumably negative, User:76.189.106.37 might have with the College, as there are hundreds of other college articles with significantly larger image galleries, many more images only tangentially related to the section in which they are placed, and much more overly promotional language throughout that User:76.189.106.37 might direct their attention towards. Why pick on this article?
On a seperate but related note, I happen to disagree with some of the information you removed from the history section of the article relating to James A. Garfield. You removed information that described the relationship between Garfield and instructors/ administrators both during and following his tenure at Hiram. I feel this was necessary in order to convey the significant role Garfield played in the early years of the institution, beyond even the time that he actually spent on campus. I have seen several correspondences written by Garfield on White House stationary, mind you, to Burke Hinsdale and other leaders of the College during his tragically brief tenure as U.S. President. Garfield's impact on the institution in its early years was so significant that there was even a movement within the College community back in the early 1900s to rename Hiram to Garfield College in his honor. This is why I feel that, if anything, the information you removed should be expanded upon, not deleted. Perhaps you were not aware of the man's impact when you removed these points. I implore you to restore them, as I think that they surely would meet your definition of encyclopedic, once expounded upon. Good day to you.
Hi. I've responded to your second paragraph on Talk:Hiram College; you did quite right to take it there. I'll respond to your first paragraph here. Both you and 76:189 seem implacably affronted with each other, and you both speak angrily. There's no future in that (and I'm about to tell 76 the same thing on my own talk). I've already suggested that you try to keep a more pleasant tone towards each other. I'm not going to keep repeating myself, or refer you to any policies about civility and the importance of assuming good faith (though believe me, we have them, and I'll cite them on request — not essays, not guidelines, but policies). I'll just say that anger and distrust of other people's motives simply don't work in this place, and they go completely against the site's culture. If you can't turn down the confrontational language and assumptions, and again I do mean both of you, there's obviously little likelihood that you'll be able to persuade the other person of anything, and you might as well take the image question straight to the Dispute resolution noticeboard. Please compare my comments to 76 on my page (there will be more of them coming up shortly).
About the hundreds of other college articles with image galleries and promotional language, yes, I'm sorry to say you're right. Unfortunately things like that tend to be the rule rather than the exception in educational institution articles, as I've already told 76. The experienced and neutral editors who persistently remove the unencyclopedic details in these articles tend to be outnumbered by the even more persistent editors who add them, often lifting advertisement-type phrasing word-by-word from the puffery on the institution's own website. I think these editors are usually quite inexperienced, and innocently unaware that they're doing something inappropriate. But that's by no means a reason against cleaning up promotion on articles that one happens to come across. On the contrary, that's exactly how wikipedia works, since we're all volunteers. Please read WP:OTHERSTUFFEXISTS, or (more pithily expressed) this essay. They're primarily about deletion discussions, but the principle applies just as well to inclusion/exclusion of content in articles. (When you see promotional statements in other school articles, do feel free to clean them up!) Bishonen | talk 21:21, 20 January 2013 (UTC).Reply
Bish, you're a good admin but let's bring it down a notch ("Both you and 76:189 seem implacably affronted with each other"). IMHO, you're being overly-dramatic, which only serves to escalate, not deescalate a situation. First, I am not "implacably affronted" with Ctva in the least. This is a simple content issue where a few personal insults were injected unnecessarily. But other than the gallery issue, the content issues between Ctva and I were resolved. And in terms of the gallery issue, there's no current dispute. All that was being sought was a policy explanation. If policy allows such use of a gallery, that's fine. If not, then that needs to be known. Anyway, I hope and assume that Ctva now understands that content inclusion is not about what's true, but rather what's reliably sourced, neutral and encyclopedic. Btw, you said that there are "hundreds of other college articles with image galleries". I looked at dozens of college articles and didn't find a photo gallery in any of them. So can you please provide links to at least five or so of these hundreds of college articles you say have photo galleries? --76.189.106.37 (talk) 22:09, 20 January 2013 (UTC)Reply
