Hello, Conorrickard, and welcome to Wikipedia! My name is Ian and I work with Wiki Education; I help support students who are editing as part of a class assignment.

I hope you enjoy editing here. If you haven't already done so, please check out the student training library, which introduces you to editing and Wikipedia's core principles. You may also want to check out the Teahouse, a community of Wikipedia editors dedicated to helping new users. Below are some resources to help you get started editing.

Edits at Cyanovirin-N

edit

In this edit to Cyanovirin-N, you wrote in your edit summary: WikiDan61. I am in the middle of something here. 90% of nthe previois version was redundat to mine and much was uncited. Please allow me to complete my references here today, and if you feel stronlgy that you can add anything scientific pleasee do so at a later date.... I don't see that the prior version and your version are "90% redundant" or even 90% similar. I do see that your version removed all of the citations that existed in the prior version and did not replace them with any useful citations. I also see that you are working on this article as part of a class assignment, but that does not alter Wikipedia's verifiability policy. If your changes are unsourced, they are subject to removal. I would recommend that you work on your changes in a sandbox, and add all of your required sources there. Once the sandbox version is ready, you can update the live article. But until then, I'm not inclined to leave your unsourced version in place. WikiDan61ChatMe!ReadMe!! 19:32, 26 April 2023 (UTC)Reply

MfD nomination of User:Conorrickard/Cyanovirin-N

User:Conorrickard/Cyanovirin-N, a page which you created or substantially contributed to, has been nominated for deletion. Your opinions on the matter are welcome; you may participate in the discussion by adding your comments at Wikipedia:Miscellany for deletion/User:Conorrickard/Cyanovirin-N and please be sure to sign your comments with four tildes (~~~~). You are free to edit the content of User:Conorrickard/Cyanovirin-N during the discussion but should not remove the miscellany for deletion template from the top of the page; such a removal will not end the deletion discussion. Thank you. Jeffhardyfan08 (talk) 21:41, 26 April 2023 (UTC)Reply

I did not realize how attentive to my activity the wiki community would be. I did not use the sandbox on my first try either. I was in the middle of editing Cyanovirin-N and saving occasionally for electronic assurance to myself. I was not done with the references at all.
The original post I had completely deleted already. I apologize if this seems rash or is not conventional educate. I did have a couple choice statements with references from the original post I was peppering into mine. To be transparent, I did not really care to look into the references of the original post.
The original post had (1) scientific info and (2) gossip about a couple scientists. Even if the gossip or opinions of the scientists were cited, again, to be transparent, I felt this was close to useless information. I researched the origin, structure, and mechanisms against viruses via published articles, and I found my scientific explanation to be just as good or better than the original post. If redundant, mine was well organized and cited. I also imagined if there was any dispute as to the worth of the wiki, it could be sorted out between all using the edit history.
This is an assignment for a biochemistry class. And we are trying to help with stubs. While this is not exactly "expanding" but more of a complete revision, I do not feel (A) my post was fallacious nor (2) I now deserve to be banned from editing any post until October.
I can't even get into my sandbox now, where I was directed to go. I have not intentionally done anything untoward, and I followed suggestions. Please allow me to help you and my biochemistry class by sharing this science with the public.
Sincerely,
Conor   Conorrickard (talk) 23:19, 28 April 2023 (UTC)Reply
Conor, I understand your frustration that your contributions on Cyanovirin-N were reverted, but the edits you made were not an improvement to the article and did not properly cite any sources. I'm glad you took my suggest at that time to use your own private space to develop the article, which you have done at User:Conorrickard/Cyanovirin-N. I do not understand your current quandary; you are not currently blocked and are free to continue to develop your private version of the article. What makes you thing that you are banned from editing until October? WikiDan61ChatMe!ReadMe!! 12:39, 29 April 2023 (UTC)Reply
so when I am confident in my sandbox, I can revise the stub? The sandbox is nice and referenced. Do you see it? Conorrickard (talk) 15:10, 29 April 2023 (UTC)Reply
I would seek review of your sandbox before you publish it. The best source of reviewers would be your own WikiEd instructor (Ahaffa), or any of the WikiProjects listed on the article's talk page. My own commentary is as follows:
  1. Your lead is basically missing. The existing article begins Cyanovirin-N (CV-N) is a protein.... Most good articles begin this way, with a basic definition of what the article is about. Your version begins The protein Cyanovirin-N (CV-N) and its bacterial origination N. ellipsosporum were screened for and discovered as being antiviral... which jumps right into the why (why do we care about this thing) before it tells us the what.
  2. Your article uses incorrect heading syntax (simple bold text rather than actual headings using the WikiSyntax == Heading text ==. This prevents a proper table of contents from being generated.
  3. The 101-character long amino acid sequence is not really helpful and should be eliminated. I don't see such content of the articles of other notable proteins.
  4. Your draft talks about "mechanism against viruses" and states a couple of seemingly unrelated facts, but does not bind those facts together.
  5. Your draft has a "Related" section that just mentions a random fact about CV-N. This fact is not, actually, random; it would fit well into a properly stucture lead.
Overall, I'd say that the draft you have now is an improvement over the original text you created at Cyanovirin-N, but it is not, as yet, ready for publication. If your course instructor is not able to help you, you can perhaps reach out to Ian (Wiki Ed). WikiDan61ChatMe!ReadMe!! 17:15, 29 April 2023 (UTC)Reply
