Photography in Denmark
editHello Catfisheye. Glad to see you are interested in photography. There has indeed been some discussion on the place of Jacob Riis in Danish photography. The Danes consider him to be one of their heroes although you are quite right to point out that he took up photography after he had arrived in the United States. I tend to agree with you that the photograph you deleted was not appropriate in the lead and I have substituted something more authentically Danish. I still feel, however, that Riis should still be mentioned in the article itself - just as he is in the literature on Danish photography. I have added a sentence in the article, clarifying the fact that he had emigrated to the United States before he took up photography. Please let me have you views on this. Ipigott (talk) 10:00, 16 February 2010 (UTC)
- Hello Ipigott. Thank you for your message. Actually national sentiments are a hard thing for me to understand. In the case of Jacob Riis, I just thought, that the photograph was inappropriate in the lead. Well, I did not delete the mention of him in the other part of the article, but I find it a bit curious to mention him at all, until there is no hint, as far as I know, that he or a historian of photography considered his 19 Danish years in one way or another important for his way to photograph.
To be trueful I do not think that it is a good idea to talk about a Danish/Turkish/Japanese photography taking the birthplace of a photographer as a criterion. Sorry for my bad English but German is my native language. Regards --Catfisheye (talk) 02:15, 17 February 2010 (UTC)- I have to say that I too am a little tired of Wikipedia's concentration on nationality -- by which I don't at all want to criticize the Danish article, as much of its content is about a time when most people were not so mobile. Knowledge, energy and time permitting, I'd like some time to create an article that might be titled "photography of Japan", which would discuss how Japan has been photographed and of course would largely be about the work of Japanese photographers (merely because hugely more of them have been active than have non-Japanese photographers) but would also discuss Bischof, Klein, and others. That digression aside, I agree with you both about Riis: in his photography, he was an American who'd arrived from Denmark some time earlier; he certainly deserves a mention (and he also deserves a much better article to himself than the one he currently has). -- Hoary (talk) 03:48, 17 February 2010 (UTC)
- Thank you both for your reactions. I think I can comfortably leave the Riis passage in Photography in Denmark the way it is for now. I've also had a good look at the Jacob Riis article and agree it needs futher work. To me, it reads more like a novel than a biography for an encyclopedia. The section on photography is pretty weak too. With the high page view counts the article gets, it looks as if further editing is a priority - but probably best undertaken by an American! And turning back to you, Catfisheye, I see from the German Wikipedia that you have been quite active working on articles on art and photography. So I look forward to further reactions and contributions from you in English too. Ipigott (talk) 10:27, 17 February 2010 (UTC)
- Blame me for the novelistic aspects. I thought I'd do his biography and then do his works. I started the former but didn't get very far before losing concentration and giving up. I'll try to do a little more work on it some time this century. -- Hoary (talk) 15:16, 17 February 2010 (UTC)
Hello,
I would welcome having your opinions here. Thank you. Regards --Catfisheye (talk) 23:15, 17 February 2010 (UTC)
- Good question. You've already got one intelligent answer. Right now I have nothing to add to it; time permitting, within the next few days I'll look at printed commentary on the photograph. (Sorry, I don't have any useful books with me right now.) -- Hoary (talk) 02:15, 18 February 2010 (UTC)

Es ist soweit, Teil 2
editHi, hier isses ruhiger. Weitere Contras kommen, ich ahne da was...

DYK for Froebel star
editOn 24 December 2011, Did you know? was updated with a fact from the article Froebel star, which you created or substantially expanded. The fact was ... that the Froebel star (pictured), a common Christmas decoration in Germany, is created by folding and weaving four identical strips of paper? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/Froebel star. You are welcome to check how many hits the article got while on the front page (here's how, quick check) and add it to DYKSTATS if it got over 5,000. If you know of another interesting fact from a recently created article, then please suggest it on the Did you know? talk page. |
