We extend a warm welcome to all of our new members, including those who have signed up for our current March Backlog Elimination Drive. We wish you all happy copy-editing.

Nominations for our mid-year Election of Coordinators open on 1 June (UTC).

Blitz: Our February Copy Editing Blitz focused on October and November 2022 requests, and the March and April 2022 backlogs. Of the 14 editors who signed up, nine claimed at least one copy-edit; and between them, they copy-edited 39,150 words in 22 articles. Barnstars awarded are here.

Drive: Sign up now for our month-long March Backlog Elimination Drive. Barnstars awarded will be posted here after the drive closes.

Progress report: As of 12:08, 19 March 2023 (UTC), GOCE copyeditors have processed 73 requests since 1 January 2023, all but five of them from 2022, and the backlog stands at 1,872 articles.

Thank you all again for your participation; we wouldn't be able to achieve what we have without you! Cheers from your GOCE coordinators Baffle gab1978, Dhtwiki, Miniapolis and Zippybonzo.

WikiCup 2023 May newsletter

The second round of the 2023 WikiCup has now finished. Contestants needed to have scored 60 points to advance into round 3. Our top five scorers in round 2 all included a featured article among their submissions and each scored over 500 points. They were:

Other notable performances were put in by   Sammi Brie,   Thebiguglyalien,   MyCatIsAChonk,   PCN02WPS, and   AirshipJungleman29.

So far contestants have achieved thirteen featured articles between them, one being a joint effort, and forty-nine good articles. The judges are pleased with the thorough reviews that are being performed, and have hardly had to reject any. As we enter the third round, remember that any content promoted after the end of round 2 but before the start of round 3 can be claimed in round 3. Remember too that you must claim your points within 14 days of "earning" them.

If you are concerned that your nomination—whether it is at good article nominations, a featured process, or anywhere else—will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews Needed (remember to remove your listing when no longer required). Questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup, and the judges are reachable on their talk pages or by email. Good luck! If you wish to start or stop receiving this newsletter, please feel free to add or remove your name from Wikipedia:WikiCup/Newsletter/Send. Sturmvogel 66 and Cwmhiraeth. The Hailey's On It! page is now live and has been since May 4th. And while it is currently locked, due to some edit wars, it is still good to now have it in the mainspace. Historyday01 (talk) 23:29, 9 May 2023 (UTC)

A silly thing

In Special:Diff/1128331148, I mentioned my belief in the lack of Wikipedia:PERSISTENCE in various Elon Musk topics, pointing out the crash in pageviews experienced by Twitter Files. Since I posted that comment on December 19, 2022, the combined average pageviews of both articles in question has decreased from ~11,000 to ~800 (only ~30-40 of the latter coming from the December article) - that's still a lot more then most other Wikipedia articles, but it makes me wonder what the results of a longer, ten year test would be. (I'm genuinely quite surprised by the Twitter FIles managing to stay relevant for longer than a month, though - so it actually probably will pass such a test. The December article, not so much.) casualdejekyll 21:35, 12 May 2023 (UTC)

On cis people's previous names

A while ago I jotted down User:Tamzin/Disfavored name as part of a radical idea for changing how we handle names, after a chat with ScottishFinnishRadish. I never got around to writing the CHANGEDNAME and DEADNAME parts, but I think what I've written gets the central idea across. Would be curious to know your thoughts. -- Tamzin[cetacean needed] (she|they|xe) 18:50, 12 May 2023 (UTC)

I've been putting a lot of thought into the on-going name discussions recently, normally while building sheds or doing yardwork. I haven't added anything to any of the discussions because, to be honest, I can't decide on exactly what I think is the best way to go with a lot of this. There needs to be some good way to balance privacy, BLP considerations, offense to BLPs, the offensiveness of using a name the subject rejected in life when they are dead, the encyclopedic interest in providing the birth name or other names they were known by. There's just so many factors in so many situations that it's hard to nail down a solid way to handle it. ScottishFinnishRadish (talk) 18:56, 12 May 2023 (UTC)
As in "Excellent; awesome"?
I think the core idea of a "disfavored name" really gets at the point of having the policy in the first place. (I personally think due weight / encyclopedic interest is a more contributing factor then it seems like everyone else thinks, but that's probably fine.) Minor criticism: "disfavored name" is liable to become an unintelligible WIkiped-ism like "notability" or anything that has ever been written in SHORTCUTUPPERCASE. I can't think of any good ways to get around that, though. Overall, I like it! (I do think just extending the current guidance on "living transgender people" to just "people" is probably a simpler solution, but I think the disfavored name idea leads to more wiggle room on the matter, which is likely to help it gain consensus.) casualdejekyll 20:42, 12 May 2023 (UTC)
I think the problem you'll run into with just expanding to "people" is situations where a name's been changed as part of a cultural custom—say, upon marriage. I recall Masem saying that this had been a sticking point in past attempts to generalize DEADNAME. With this in mind, I've thrown some more thoughts at the "Disfavored name" not-even-a-draft, just to give a rough idea of how one might apply the principle to article content. And I do agree "disfavored name" would become a term of art, but often terms of art are the only way to succinctly discuss complex topics. -- Tamzin[cetacean needed] (she|they|xe) 20:01, 13 May 2023 (UTC)
Honestly, what with "mother's maiden name" being such a common security question, I don't really think there is a problem there, but that's probably an unpopular opinion. casualdejekyll 23:25, 13 May 2023 (UTC)
Heh, my mother's maiden name is findable in mainspace, but fortunately I know better than to answer a security question honestly. -- Tamzin[cetacean needed] (she|they|xe) 23:32, 13 May 2023 (UTC)
I mean, I wouldn't know what it's like having notable family, but every time you talk about it you make it sound like torture. Though one time I saw someone redlinking your name in mainspace... absolutely horrifying casualdejekyll 00:09, 14 May 2023 (UTC)
Ha, I saw you unlinked that. I might actually pass GNG due to the lack of a WP:BLP2E, but I think I'm the only person in the world who knows where to find all the sources, and 🤐. -- Tamzin[cetacean needed] (she|they|xe) 00:49, 14 May 2023 (UTC)
Yeah, I would be absolutely terrified to be in your position there. I can barely handle it when people follow me on social media... casualdejekyll 00:54, 14 May 2023 (UTC)

Administrators' newsletter – June 2023

News and updates for administrators from the past month (May 2023).

  Guideline and policy news

  • Following an RfC, editors indefinitely site-banned by community consensus will now have all rights, including sysop, removed.
  • As a part of the Wikimedia Foundation's IP Masking project, a new policy has been created that governs the access to temporary account IP addresses. An associated FAQ has been created and individual communities can increase the requirements to view temporary account IP addresses.

  Technical news

  • Bot operators and tool maintainers should schedule time in the coming months to test and update their tools for the effects of IP masking. IP masking will not be deployed to any content wiki until at least October 2023 and is unlikely to be deployed to the English Wikipedia until some time in 2024.

  Arbitration

  • The arbitration case World War II and the history of Jews in Poland has been closed. The topic area of Polish history during World War II (1933-1945) and the history of Jews in Poland is subject to a "reliable source consensus-required" contentious topic restriction.

Your draft article, Draft:Mikaela Davis

WikiCup 2023 July newsletter

The third round of the 2023 WikiCup has come to an end. The 16 users who made it to the fourth round had at least 175 points. Our top scorers in round 3 were:

As always, any content promoted after the end of round 3 but before the start of round 4 can be claimed in round 4. Please also remember that you must claim your points within 14 days of "earning" them. When doing GARs, please make sure that you check that all the GA criteria are fully met. Please also remember that all submissions must meet core Wikipedia policies, regardless of the review process.

Good luck! I changed my global CSS because of you

Fun fact #1
Your signature's color is pink.
Fun fact #2
I set my interwiki links to be pink.
Fun fact #3
I added a statement in my global.css to explicitly remove all CSS styling from your signature, because it is confusing.

--QuickQuokka [talkcontribs] 20:17, 8 July 2023 (UTC)

PS, no hate, this is just something I thought was kinda funny --QuickQuokka [talkcontribs] 20:17, 8 July 2023 (UTC)
This would be worse if you were on meta, because I'm pretty sure my signature there is a link to this page, which is literally an interwiki link. Have fun with that one! casualdejekyll 22:37, 8 July 2023 (UTC)
Ping: @QuickQuokka casualdejekyll 22:38, 8 July 2023 (UTC)
@Casualdejekyll: Redirects seem to work just fine and appear as green, so I assume the interwiki link would appear as pink on Meta.
Also, because your signature here is a self-link, it still appears as pink. QuickQuokka [talkcontribs] 23:26, 8 July 2023 (UTC)
@Casualdejekyll: Actually, now looking at toolforge:signatures/check/meta.wikimedia.org/casualdejekyll, you do not have an interwiki link as your Meta signature. Your userpage on Meta, however, is a soft redirect to the English Wikipedia. QuickQuokka [talkcontribs] 00:05, 9 July 2023 (UTC)
