April 13: WikiWednesday Salon NYC and Mini-Video Opportunity

Wednesday April 13, 7pm: WikiWednesday Salon NYC and Mini-Video Opportunity

You are invited to join the Wikimedia NYC community for our monthly "WikiWednesday" evening salon (7-9pm) and knowledge-sharing workshop at Babycastles gallery by 14th Street / Union Square in Manhattan.

Special this month, a Mini-Video opportunity for individuals to share their Wikipedia experiences (during pre-meeting, 6-7pm, and in side-office during regular meetup). A videographer will be present to record 1-3 minute Mini-Videos of folks informally speaking, sharing anything about their Wikipedia-related projects, whether an edit-a-thon they joined, an article they edited, or a class project they were a part of, etc.

We will also follow up on plans for recent (Art+Feminism!) and upcoming edit-a-thons, and other outreach activities.

We welcome the participation of our friends from the Free Culture movement and from all educational and cultural institutions interested in developing free knowledge projects.

We will also place our chapter's votes for the global Wikimedia Foundation board.

After the main meeting, pizza/chicken/vegetables and refreshments and video games in the gallery!

6:00pm - 7:00pm Mini-Video and social hour
7:00pm - 9:00pm Regular meeting: Introduction for new participants, Noshing, Chapter projects

We especially encourage folks to add your 5-minute lightning talks to our roster, and otherwise join in the "open space" experience!

Newcomers are very welcome! Bring your friends and colleagues! --Pharos (talk) 14:20, 6 April 2016 (UTC)

thanks for welcome

Thanks much for the welcome, BrillLyle. I am working on my first article now and I am thrilled to see Wikipedia from the inside. I may need some guidance on how to add the nice formatting to the page, inserting pictures etc. May I ask is it correct that (a) one must use Wikimedia Commons to insert pictures and what is the best option to choose, (b) you insert pictures not in the draft stage, but once the article is submitted? Can I do some neat formatting for the page using the Visual editor or do I have to learn the source code? Any guidance or links to help information is much appreciated. And thanks for the cookies :) OtterNYC OtterNYC (talk) 04:06, 14 March 2016 (UTC)

Hi OtterNYC. Welcome to Wikipedia! Are you talking about the article you are working on here: Draft:Renée Radell?
It is problematic that you are related to the subject of the article. I think we talked at the MoMA editathon? Did you ever speak with DGG and get his input on how to proceed. I would recommend you start editing adding content to other articles first, get some experience, then tackle creating a new article.
As far as your questions go: (a) You don't have to use Wikimedia Commons but I would recommend using Wikimedia Commons. (b) You can insert the picture into the article at any stage, even in its draft stage. I don't use the Visual Editor but I assume you can do much if not all of the same functions you can with the Wiki Markup.
But back to the bigger issue: as far as the article on the person you are related to, that is definitely problematic. -- Erika aka BrillLyle (talk) 04:17, 14 March 2016 (UTC)
yes,BrillLyle, we worked together. I looked at the sources, and thought there was a decent chance of notability. Because of the COI, I' asked him to show me the draft before proceeding with it. (I haven't gotten to it yet, but I will in the next day or two. If I think it won't pass AfD, I'll tell you that. OtterNYC, as background, we have been having problems at some of our editathons with people want ing to write about themselves or their relatives; most of them have had little chance of notability. Therefore, BrillLyle and I and the others at WM-NYC are being very cautious about this.) DGG ( talk ) 05:28, 14 March 2016 (UTC)

This is great to be able to talk to two Wikipedians at once! I hope you can both see this and I don't have to resend to DGG talk page (Erika, kindly let me know if I need to somehow cc: DGG or if this is automatically a three way communication - please remember I am completely new at this!) And thanks for the notes on photos. David, Erika was kind enough to direct me to you at the MOMA event and we did discuss the COI. Per your suggestion, I put at the top of my draft:Renee Radell that I am a relative of Renee. I look forward to your review and suggestions. Erika, I am happy to try my hand at editing other articles. I suppose I should just look through Wikipedia for a subject matter wherein I might add some expertise and start editing?OtterNYC (talk) 14:45, 14 March 2016 (UTC)

Yes, we all Wikipedia:watchlist our pals' talk pages, which creates sort of a social networking aspect to Wikipedia. And we jump into each others' conversations uninvited. So, you aren't just talking to three of us, but to many who love, hate, or otherwise care about Erika's activities. Privacy, no. Wikipedia is mainly a fishbowl. I hope you can get to our Wikipedia:Meetup/NYC meeting Wednesday evening, which is talking rather than editing. Meanwhile yes, do look through existing articles to find bad grammar, cloudy prose, missing facts, promotionalism, lies, whatever needs to be subtracted, added, rearranged or otherwise improved. Me, I as much subtract as add, and my additions are mostly photos and geographic locations, but whatever. Jim.henderson (talk) 15:09, 14 March 2016 (UTC)
Thanks for the note, Jim. Will try to make it Wednesday and say hello. BTW, this is pretty cool communicating with the Wikipedia crowd! OtterNYC (talk) 15:53, 14 March 2016 (UTC)
Hello Editors. I have made many edits on my article draft:Renee Radell and I wonder if at this point I might submit it? A couple of editors have looked at it (DGG, Jydog) and opined that there is likely notability. Every sentence is cited and I believe any hyperbole that may have existed has been removed. Should I be doing something else to move it forward? Thanks for any guidance. OtterNYC (talk) 12:45, 31 March 2016 (UTC)
Hi OtterNYC, I saw that the page has been moved out of draft and into the main space. I cleaned up a few things, hope that was okay. I think this page needs an Infobox, an image, and a better description of the scope of her work. She's an American Expressionist painter? I wasn't sure. It's a good start. Best -- Erika aka BrillLyle (talk) 12:28, 11 April 2016 (UTC)
Hi Erika. Thanks for your changes, and what great news the article made it to the main space! I am not sure how that happened but Renee is very appreciative. I took the liberty of suggesting that under Career we include the Exhibitions and Critical Notices, since she is more known as an artist rather than a teacher (teaching was the only sub heading under Career before I made the change). Whatever you think is best. Could also turn Career into Teaching as a Heading and make Exhibitions and Critical notices other Headings. FYI, a new artist monograph on Renee will be published this fall and the writer is Eleanor Heartney, who is a well-known feminist author. I worked on this book with Eleanor and Renee for the past two years. When the book comes out, it will be an excellent source for the scope of her work. I agree we need an image. I have JPEGs but I don't want to mess up the formatting on the page (I understand pictures can be tricky). I'll give it a try in any event. I also need to look into what you mean by Infobox. I assume I can find out how to add one. Finally, I hope to attend the Wednesday meeting for the New York Chapter. I have a friend who would fit in very well, loves research and is a super writer. Hope to see you then!!! Thanks again OtterNYC (talk) 01:44, 12 April 2016 (UTC)
Hi Erika. Just added the info box! Needs improvement but I now know how to do it. Even aded the image, with help of Jim. Thanks again for your help and encouragement. Looking forward to seeing you tomorrow :) OtterNYC (talk) 04:17, 13 April 2016 (UTC)
One more thing, and sorry to bother you Erika. I checked the Wikipedia Categories and Renee is CLEARLY an American Figurative Expressionist. This is key since if you go to a general Google search, American Expressionism also includes the more widely recognized art category American Abstract Expressionism (like Jackson Pollock), which is not where Renee resides. So I would like to change her category to Amerian Figurative Expressionism but I can't see her category designations on her article. I hope they have not been deleted. I also would be helpful to Wikipedia in general in the area of art because I am quite knowledgable about art collector and art period/movement categories. OtterNYC (talk) 15:33, 13 April 2016 (UTC)
Hi OtterNYC. A couple of things: (1) Please indent your replies so it's easier to respond and follow, (2) Please write up a sentence about yourself on your User Page so your User Name is no longer red. And regarding the categories, there is no subcategory that I saw for Amercian Figurative Expressionist painters. Categories are more Jim's expertise than mine. But she needs to have at least a few categories. All the best, Erika aka BrillLyle (talk) 16:22, 13 April 2016 (UTC)
Thanks for the note. I'll say something about myself on my User Page. I'll also take up the art categories with Jim. My mistake, there is not a formal Wiki art category for American Figurative Expressionism but there is a decent Wikipedia article on it. I will ask Jim if we can add a category since I know that Figurative Expressionism and Abstract Expressionism are worlds apart.OtterNYC (talk) 18:31, 13 April 2016 (UTC)

Thank you so much for your help!

JVadera (talk) 02:06, 14 April 2016 (UTC)

Hi @JVadera: -- Hope Draft:Isa Noyola gets out of Draft space, as I watched her keynote video and cried, think she's so brave and awesome for doing such important work. I have reached out to ask a friend who works on this type of thing to re-review it.... Looks like your class editathon was really awesome! Keep up the great work and let me know if you need any help, etc. All the best, -- Erika aka BrillLyle (talk) 13:56, 14 April 2016 (UTC)
Hi @BrillLyle: -- Thank you so much for your kind words. It means a lot. Still some work to do on a few more entries, but we are definitely on our way. I feel that Isa would be a great inclusion! Part of our class is about archives, history, memory and underepresented narratives. We really appreciate all of your help. All my best, JVadera (talk)

Gallery

With the Met Breuer gallery, I first thought it wouldn't show the captions, I didn't even think to hover with the mouse. I wonder if there's a way to have it display the captions over when not hovered, and hide them when hovered. Then it'd be more apparent... ɱ (talk · vbm · coi) 16:55, 23 April 2016 (UTC)

I think that's sort of the point with the hover, that they don't show unless one hovers the mouse. I'm trying to replicate what was done at a Guggenheim image collection editathon last year. WM NYC met with the Met folks at the Met Breuer and I think hopefully there will be quite a few more images, so.... Plus it's pretty IMO.... :-) -- Erika aka BrillLyle (talk) 20:01, 23 April 2016 (UTC)

Saturday April 30, 1-6pm: Contemporary Art of the Middle East and North Africa @ Guggenheim

File:Monir Portrait-exh ph021.jpg

On Saturday April 30, 2016, in conjunction with a global campaign, the Guggenheim will host its fourth Wikipedia edit-a-thon — or, #guggathon — to enhance Wikipedia's coverage of modern and contemporary artists from the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region, and to counter geocultural systemic bias on Wikipedia.

The Guggenheim aims to further the goals of the Guggenheim UBS MAP Global Art Initiative, and build on the model of campaigns like the Wikipedia Edit-a-thon at the Guggenheim: Women in Architecture, Wikipedia Asian Month, and Art+Feminism.

New and experienced editors are welcome. The event will include a training session for participants who are new to Wikipedia and Wikipedia specialists will be on hand to provide basic instruction and editing support.

Can’t join us in New York? Visit our global MENA Artists Month partnership page to coordinate international and online events as well.

Time: Presentation: 1:00 pm - 2:30 pm, Edit-a-thon: 2:30pm - 6:00pm
Location: Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, 1071 Fifth Avenue (88th Street), New York City, New York 10128
Guests should enter using the 88th Street entrance via the ramp at 88th Street and Fifth Avenue

Horace and Pete synopsis

I see you just removed a large chunk of synopsis from the Horace and Pete article. I don't know if you saw my section on the talk page about this paragraph, but you took out a lot more than I thought should be removed. Might I suggest adding to the discussion there so we can come to a consensus about what, if any, part of that section should remain. Thanks. 99.192.71.172 (talk) 14:39, 27 April 2016 (UTC)

I would be great if you are going to edit if you could register so you are a member of the community....
It makes me a bit uncomfortable that this information borders on original research and is in no way cited. It's not how I edit Wikipedia articles -- I always cite what I add. But obviously if you feel strongly about this, please restore the information. I won't undo that at all. I support adding content to the page, just would prefer it was cited and not original research. Best, BrillLyle (talk) 14:50, 27 April 2016 (UTC)
Ok, I will add back with the changes I recommended on the talk page. 99.192.71.172 (talk) 15:13, 27 April 2016 (UTC)

Hi, BrillLyle! Thanks for the welcome. I'm working on my first new article. I'm curious about how to move it from my username to "live" Wikipedia space once I'm finished. Can you give me some advice? Thanks! Kmbarbera (talk) 22:20, 25 April 2016 (UTC)

Hi Kmbarbera! Great start on that page. I moved the page into your Sandbox here. Please write a sentence about yourself on your User page. Your User page is where people can learn a little bit about you. Typically drafts and new pages aren't done on your user page. I will look at the page a little bit and see if I can help you out! It's a great start! -- BrillLyle (talk) 16:45, 2 May 2016 (UTC)

Hefuna

I too want to thank you for the welcome, BrillLyle. I created an article for restaurateur Patricia Murphy (1905-1979), and I am happy to report more than 1,100 page views to date. Today I went to the Guggenheim Museum, where I was part of a Wikimedia project to edit articles about Middle Eastern and North African artists. I'm currently editing an article about the Egyptian-German artist Susan Hefuna. I believe I can help improve the Hefuna article. Busypencil (talk) 01:13, 1 May 2016 (UTC)

TED talks

Hi BrillLyle, I saw your note on Outreach and decided to post here and now I see you are active for the NYC chapter. Sweet! I would like to chat about how to set up the TED writing challenge. So far it looks like we have prizes and possible dates, so I can start to set this up. I would like to see the challenge run from Outreach or Wikidata rather than English Wikipedia, but I would have no problem having the project page on enwiki being a mirror of the other page that is trimmed down to just the list of todo bios for enwiki. The competition is not to create articles for talks, but for speakers, and even then only the speakers in the dataset of 2000 talks. Though there are lots of other notable TED speakers, those are not going to be in the list that can earn points, as the use of the dataset is the goal, and these people all have bios on the main TED.com website. So in summary, there are winning TEDx talks in the dataset, but otherwise no other TEDx talks, which might be confusing for some participants who are accustomed to thinking of all TED talks being equal. Let me know your thoughts on setup. Jane (talk) 13:35, 8 May 2016 (UTC)

Wiki Loves Pride 2016

As a past contributor, you are invited to participate in the third annual Wiki Loves Pride campaign, which runs through the month of June. The purpose of the campaign is to create and improve content related to LGBT culture and history. How can you help?

  1. Create or improve LGBT-related Wikipedia pages and showcase the results of your work here
  2. Document local LGBT culture and history by taking pictures at pride events and uploading your images to Wikimedia Commons
  3. Contribute to an LGBT-related task force at another Wikimedia project (Wikidata, Wikimedia Commons, Wikivoyage, etc.)

Looking for topics? The Tasks page, which you are welcome to update, offers some ideas and wanted articles.

This campaign is supported by the Wikimedia LGBT+ User Group, an officially recognized affiliate of the Wikimedia Foundation. The group's mission is to develop LGBT-related content across all Wikimedia projects, in all languages. Visit the affiliate's page at Meta-Wiki for more information, or follow Wikimedia LGBT+ on Facebook. Remember, Wiki Loves Pride is about creating and improving LGBT-related content at Wikimedia projects, and content should have a neutral point of view. One does not need to identify as LGBT or any other gender or sexual minority to participate. This campaign is about adding accurate, reliable information to Wikipedia, plain and simple, and all are welcome! If you have any questions, please leave a message on the campaign's talk page.

Thanks, and happy editing! ---Another Believer (Talk) 22:08, 30 May 2016 (UTC)

TED speaker challenge

Hi, I noticed there is a calendar for NYC-related events here too on enwiki that you have edited. Could you add the TED speakers challenge? Thx. Jane (talk) 07:54, 9 June 2016 (UTC)

@Jane023: I added it to the Google calendar here:
These types of events aren't typically listed on the meetup calendar -- if that is the one you are referring to? It seems like TED is a profit-based initiative, and there are prizes too -- I say this in comparison to the Women in Red etc. challenges. If you feel strongly about it then definitely add it yourself. -- Erika aka BrillLyle (talk) 11:52, 9 June 2016 (UTC)
Oh super! Thanks. BTW, according to their website, TED is a non-profit. Jane (talk) 12:09, 9 June 2016 (UTC)
As Jane indicates, TED is indeed non-profit. WikiLovesMonuments offered prizes, as do many similar initiatives. Why is this an issue? Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 12:43, 9 June 2016 (UTC)

Disambiguation link notification for June 25

Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. Wikipedia appreciates your help. We noticed though that when you edited Khalil Gibran Muhammad, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page Segregated. Such links are almost always unintended, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of "Did you mean..." article titles. Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.
