Railway stations and style points

Hi. I just reworked your recent edit on Cantley railway station. Could you have a look at what I changed please and try to consider using this sort of style for your other edits (not exactly - we all write differently of course - but as a guide at least). In particular could you add a nav for the source you provide? A book title or whatever - preferably with publisher and date and place of publication. And note that one of the many things Wikipedia does slightly oddly is that we don't use th or st after numerals in dates - so today is 26 January, not 26th January. And please add wiki-links where appropriate (bit not too many...)

Others might disagree with me btw - there are lots of enthusiasts about stuff like this who like things done in specific ways. Hope you can see the sort of thing I mean - shout, either here or on my talk page if you need a hand. Blue Square Thing (talk) 19:32, 26 January 2016 (UTC)

You seem to be copypasting the same chunk of text into article after article, repeating the same mistakes over and over. Please look back through the earlier pages that you worked on, most of which have been subsequently edited by myself, Blue Square Thing and others - have a look at what we did. I've just reverted an edit made to Buckenham station. The wording seemed to be a line history more than a history of the actual station. It also lacked wiki linking or proper referencing - it's not hard to learn how to do this. Can I strongly suggest that you engage us in some conversation here and maybe try a draft paragraph or two summarising the history as it related to Buckenham with referencing. Giant Snowman claims I use non-sourced material. When you look at his reversions he just puts the article back to limited meaningless information. He clearly has a prejudice against ENFA and the Metcalf book and the Dykes book. He should be blocked as an editor as he does not give reasons, is dictatorial and is out of line with other editors who do not mind my material. I believe this nameless person to be prejudiced and ignorant and unfair. GIVE ME REASONS my stuff is unsourced instead of acting like some latter-day Hitler.

(edit conflict) Quick comment for the reviewing admin - all you need to do it check this guy's edits, he adds mass of content to articles, the vast majority of which is unreferenced or poorly referenced. All I have done is remove the unreferenced information and try to clean up what was referenced (1, 2, 3). I warned him about this - he ignored and therefore was blocked. I'm not the first to warn him about this, check out a previous warning from 2 years ago... PS pleasantly surprised that Godwin's law has been proved so quickly! Three points I apologise for any offence but the claim by GiantSnowman that I use unsourced material is unfair. I have taken basically one line articles about Victorian footballers and made them interesting by using three sources. One ENFA - The Soccer database for England & Wales; two Who' Who books well researched and written and Metcalf' book on the first season of the Football League. I will abide by WP rules but you are making it very difficult to improve articles and it seems editors can revert without giving the writer the chance to explain their source linking the material.

That's nowhere near sufficient. You compared another Wikipedia editor to Hitler. Step back, take whatever time you need to cool down (really! everyone needs this from time to time), and then read WP:NPA. Your personal attack is incompatible with you remaining a Wikipedia editor and you are being extended a last chance to show this was just a heat-of-the-moment thing, as happens to all of us. --Yamla (talk) 14:48, 27 February 2018 (UTC)

Bkendler, please look at the edits I linked to above. You will clearly see me removing reams and reams of unsourced content that you added. If you can't understand that then you are not fit enough to edit Wikipedia. Adding heaps of unsourced content is not "improving" Wikipedia, it is making it worse. Dear GiantSnowman I used inappropriate language towards you and that was not right and I am sorry for that. I really am. I am caring for my 97 year old Mother at the moment and writing up football biographies as been a wonderful outlet for me as I have very little free time. The restrictions on my time make life difficult and makes me irascible. It's not an excuse. The language I used was wrong. I am very, very sorry. Can I in the spirit of goodwill take up one of the items you removed alleging I had no source. This was from Herbert Snook - Herbert Snook was born in the City of Nottingham on 23 December 1867. As he approached his 19th Birthday he played football for Trent College, Long Eaton in County Derbyshire. The ENFA website and the Garth Dykes both confirm that he played for Trent College. Therefore, with respect, why do you object to this material? BKendler

Not a problem - apology accepted. Regarding your content of "Herbert Snook was born in the City of Nottingham on 23 December 1867. As he approached his 19th Birthday he played football for Trent College, Long Eaton in County Derbyshire", it should be changed to simply 'Born in Nottingham, Snook played football for Trent College" and then directly cited to ENFA (using {{ENFA}}) and/or the Dykes book (including page number). I leave it up to you and Giant Snowman whether to lift the block now. Now GiantSnowman and I have discussed a sample of what the latter objects to I will endeavour to be more scrupulous at sourcing. In terms of page numbers I have not seen books used referring to pages. So take the Metcalf book. The normal reference is like this <ref>{{cite book|last=Metcalf|first=Mark|title=The Origins of the Football League|year=2013|publisher=Amberley|isbn=978 1 4456 1881 4}}</ref> Where do I insert page numbers please? League appearances

League appearances from all leagues belong in the player's infobox, whether they be in the Football League or in another league... Midland League, La Liga etc. Otherwise Lionel Messi would have 0 (0) in his box. Also if there is a statistics table that is referenced then you don't need to add references for the same stats in the infobox. Cheers.--EchetusXe 11:33, 22 March 2018 (UTC)

Hi I understand your point but there is a serious lack of consistency and clarity of the English. The phrase at the bottom of the ( I am not sure what you call it - The Bio panel says the following, 'Senior club appearances and goals counted for the domestic league only.' Now if you ask anybody what is the Domestic league in England especially back in Victorian times then it is The Football league. If you look at most Football Bio' that what's they count. So the point about Messi is spurious. He plays in La Liga so you would count that. But if he retired and played in ( I don't know Spanish minor Leagues) the Andalucia Regional League that would not count. So Domestic league = in England Football League, now Premier/Championship/EFL League. That is the way most of your colleagues interpret "Domestic league". The English dictionary explains that domestic means home or relating to the country. So, the Midland league is a regional league not a Domestic league. Now I have probably upset you but I am a pedant. So, with my holding of the breath I ask why did you remove the descriptions of Billy Rowley as a player. Again it is inconsistent and, in my humble opinion, brings a long dead hero of the past alive. If its just facts and figures it's a bit boring.

I have reverted the date of birth to 26 June 1868. The sources I cited are far more reliable than Matthews, Joyce and ENFA, all of which will no doubt have copied from one to the other. Both englandfootballonline and the Southampton historians have researched these matters thoroughly. Free BMD only refers to the quarter in which the birth is registered and is therefore not helpful in fixing the precise date. Fred Poland

Hello, just a quick note regarding your edit on Fred Poland and my subsequent edit which rephrased or rearranged most of your text - please don't take it as an affront, because it's not intended in that way, but your style was not really on the right level for Wikipedia, as other people have already pointed out to you. It's fantastic that you're bringing past players to life with all this information about them, and I applaud that effort because you're doing an invaluable job - but look back up this page to when you were blocked, and the way you wrote your counter-arguments there.

That's the kind of formality that Wikipedia requires, by which I mean, do keep writing all the stuff from your books (and citing the sources!) but try this style instead. Sorry, I'm trying to think of an easy way of explaining it.

Maybe think of having a chat to your mates, and then writing an encyclopaedia - two different things, which you'd do in two different styles. So you might tell your mates that Fred Poland was part of a Burnley team that 'scored three-goals-or-more-in-a-League-match', but if you turned the book to a page called, 'Fred Poland', you'd write about Fred's personal achievements, without any emotional language. Not all facts-and-figures, that's not what I'm saying. I'm saying - for example - that you'd tell your mate, 'oh, yeah, he came from Scotland to Lancashire 'cause he was looking for work', but in the book you'd write, 'Poland moved from Scotland to Lancashire to look for work'.

That's the style you're after, and as I mentioned, you used it very well in your discussions with GiantSnowman in February. Have a go at using it in your edits too, that's my only criticism - but please do carry on, because even if it needs reshaping a bit so it fits Wikipedia, your work is valued. All users who registered an account before Sunday, 28 October 2018, made at least 150 mainspace edits before Thursday, 1 November 2018 and are not currently blocked are eligible to vote. Users with alternate accounts may only vote once.

The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to impose binding solutions to disputes between editors, primarily for serious conduct disputes the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the authority to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail.
