Logical quotation

Edits, minor and otherwise
editI'm afraid that I have to call your attention to an inadvertent breach of Wikipedia etiquette that you've been committing. In looking at your contribution history, I see that you routinely mark your edits as minor. In fact, many, if not most, of your edits don't meet the criteria described at WP:MINOR.
Basically, the minor-edit box should only be checked when there's no possibility that any reasonable editor could differ with them: corrections of obvious misspellings, formatting errors, obvious typos, and the like. Under most circumstances, edits shouldn't be marked as minor; in particular, edits that add, remove, or change content.
In looking at the edit summaries in your recent contribution history, I find a number of edits marked as minor that run afoul of this. For instance, in this one, you state that you "deleted erroneous statements". In this one, you "corrected Peter Klein's professional affiliation". In a great many, your edit summary is something like "minor edits to improve readability"; but these aren't straightforward corrections of grammatical errors, and another editor might differ from you on whether the readability's been improved or worsened. In the edit that showed up on my watchlist, you changed an ampersand into "and"; but you did so inside of a quotation, so that the quote was no longer faithful to the source cited.
As WP:MINOR explains, a major problem with marking non-minor edits as minor is that some editors have their watchlists set to exclude minor edits. To such an editor, your practice might look like an attempt to sneak a substantive edit through without attracting the notice of article-watchers.
It never hurts not to check the minor-edit box, but if you want to use it, use it conservatively: familiarize yourself with WP:MINOR, and only check it when you're sure that your edit meets all the criteria. Unless you've devoted yourself to WP:GNOME work, such as seeking out and correcting particular spelling errors, you should probably use the checkbox less than 10% of the time.
I hope I don't seem to be coming down on you too hard for this; I see that you've been editing for less than a year, and I know that there's considerable learning curve involved in picking up all the more common Wikipolicies and Wikipractices. I won't make any more changes to Wikipedia entries. Being threatened of being "in violation"--by someone lacking the spine to identify themselves, no less--when I'm donating my time to provide solid information is too much of a hassle. You win, Doofus.
