Gibraltar, San Roque and Algeciras edit

Ok you are right. But we should not fall for the same tendentious editing which is so characteristic of Gibnews and Gibraltarian.--Burgas00 20:44, 1 June 2006 (UTC)Reply

Yes, I know. That is why Gibnews keep dropping pills about how untrustworthy Spanish people are. He is simply trying to provoke me in that sense but it is not going to happen. I have made some mistakes in the past but after 3000 edits you learn the lesson well. I have no patience with people who think they own articles and generally get tired about relatively soon (I would rather use my time somewhere else). Also, please make no mistake I have no problem with people from Gibraltar at all, one of my flatmates while I was at university in England was a Gibraltarian and I really used to enjoy the fact of being able to code-switch with him in front of everyone else as if it was the most natural thing in the world. I have problems with the attitude of other users such as Ismael76, this is why I have ignored his comments somewhere else. Salud y saludos, E Asterion u talking to me? 20:58, 1 June 2006 (UTC)Reply

Ok it is true, although Ismael76 has not engaged in edit wars for some time and I suspect he does not take the issue all that seriously. By what i have seen from the history of the Gibraltar page, Gibnews is not allowing any form of editing on the article. He seems to have an even greater hostility/paranoia towards Spain and Spaniards in general than Gibraltarian-yanito. Why was the latter banned? I cannot imagine someone behaving worse than Gibnews does...--Burgas00 10:36, 2 June 2006 (UTC)Reply

I am not completely sure of the reasons. I think it was because personal attacks and trollish behaviour. I think the guy just cracked up when confronted with verifiable sources that contradicted his POV, as presented by User:Ecemaml at the time, and took it upon himself to harrass him instead debating. I had abandoned wikipedia for some months last year because my discomfort with that very same situation you are describing: People thinking they own articles and totally controlling them as their pets (as Gibnews now does). This is the main problem of Wikipedia as I see it. People using it as a soapbox for their own propagandistic goals. I had experienced the same problem with other subjects (i.e. Kosovo). Sometimes is like banging your head against the wall, I think. If anything, we could ask for an independent opinion on this issue (a Request for Comments). Thanks, E Asterion u talking to me? 12:07, 2 June 2006 (UTC)Reply
I think we should do just that. Although I dont know if it would work since all past disputes relating to Gibraltar seem to have died down since editors have desisted arguing with Gibnews.

Independent opinions would have to look at the whole discussion page. I have looked at it recently and it basically consists of Gibnews imposing his will on a number of other editors relating to many issues. Some of them are as silly as whether the disputed tag should be included on the article...(Gibnews thought it shouldnt even though his version was disputed by all other users) Who was in control of the Kosovo page? Was it a pro-serb or pro-albanian POV individual?--Burgas00 13:12, 2 June 2006 (UTC)Reply

E Asterion u talking to me?
E Asterion u talking to me? 21:42, 2 June 2006 (UTC)Reply

E Asterion u talking to me? 23:26, 2 June 2006 (UTC)Reply

A ver si me ayudas a convencerle.

User Pantherarosa edit

Hi, you said you wanted other admins to voice their opinions in the matter on WP:AN/I. However, given the length of the discussion, I feel that many are skipping over it. I've now had to relist it as it was auto-archived. Therefore, since you are the only one who has been an involved third-party, would you be able to take the action you feel fit against Patherarosa's onslaught of perosnal attacks? Paul Cyr 18:07, 3 June 2006 (UTC)Reply

Paul, I am sorry but I am not an admin. Did you also ask for a checkuser? Is he behind the user who vandalised your page? Do you want me to re-list this? (I guess that is all I could do). Thanks, E Asterion u talking to me? 19:57, 3 June 2006 (UTC)Reply
Oh sorry, I misunderstood a previous discussion and thought you were an admin. The RfCU is a bit backed up so I've been waiting patiently. In the mean time I'm trying to get Pantherarosa's actions dealt with.

Bonaparte etc edit

I am affraid that some vandals will just keep popping up everywhere, and that we have to deal with them when they show up. If we are sure it is a single IP it can be blocked, but many of them just go to other places and we can not just block ever IP for that. What you can hope is that they give up in time if they see there is no way of edditwarring their opinion into wikipedia. -- Kim van der Linde at venus 18:40, 4 June 2006 (UTC)Reply

I don't actually have a Zastava but my cousin owns a Zastava Koral, 2004 model. So far in its ownership the car has been surprisingly reliable, only 1 repair ever made so far (repaired brakes).

Link edit

We try to keep the number of external links down (see Wikipedia:External links; as this was a link to a site in Swedish, it's surely not indispensable to an article in the English-language Wikipedia. --Mel Etitis (Μελ Ετητης) 21:38, 4 June 2006 (UTC)Reply

Good point; I imagine that most of the others should go too, unless they're there as sources of information given in the article. I removed this one because it had been added in the last twenty-four hours or so, so showed up in the diff that I used. --Mel Etitis (Μελ Ετητης) 21:55, 4 June 2006 (UTC)Reply
Ah, a Babel fish — one of the the things that I most often wish for when editing Wikipedia. --Mel Etitis (Μελ Ετητης) 22:04, 4 June 2006 (UTC)Reply

Oh, I certainly didn't want to suggest that the link wasn't to a relevant and good-quality site; it's just that, in light of our policy of restricting the number of links, and the fact that a very small minority of our readers are likely to be able to understand the article, it seemed a prime candidate for removal. --Mel Etitis (Μελ Ετητης) 22:16, 4 June 2006 (UTC)Reply

Kosovo Vote edit

Dear Asterion, I have had contact with User:Ilir pz and he has agreed to have a vote on the introduction of the Kosovo article (and the Template: Kosovo description. The exact terms still have to be agreed, but I suggested (and he agreed) that any introduction should at least include the following: 1) It should state that Kosovo is administered by the UN, 2) it should state Kosovo is part of a larger union/country (either Serbia, SCG or FRY) and 3) it should state that Kosovo will most likely become indepedent in the near future. If this is ok with you, do you think you and User: Osli73 (if he still is interested in editing this article) can come up with a version of the introduction to the article in a couple of days to include in the vote? Any other comments are ofcourse also more then welcome. Let me know your opinion on this matter, best regards Cpt. Morgan 23:19, 4 June 2006 (UTC)Reply

User Batman2005 edit

Hi again, I was wondering if you could voice your opinion in another personal attack case here: [1] basically Batman2005 is linking things like douche and loser to people he doesn't like. Paul Cyr 05:10, 5 June 2006 (UTC)Reply

Note that these people are not Wikipedia editors and it doesn't violate NPA. The King of Kings 05:15, 5 June 2006 (UTC)Reply
Also note that this is what Moe Epsilon's thinks the policy implies. I'm sure Asterion has read the first line that says do not make personal attacks anywhere. And Moe, the only way you would know that I posted on Asterion's talk page is if you were tracking my contribs. Are you wikistalking me? :D *blushes* Paul Cyr 05:17, 5 June 2006 (UTC)Reply
Regarding Batman2005, I believe indeed that some of his comments could be understood as personal attacks, particularly this one (even if it was directed to an obvious sockpuppet who had vandalised Batman2005's userpage). On the userpage matter, I am personally against anything divisive or what could be understood as offensive by any member of wikipedia or from elsewhere. The way I see it is that at the end of the day, we are all working here towards writing an encyclopedia and this sort of things do not help much. This is not a political forum. The problem is that policy in this area is still very unclear, as it is in the userbox issue, and many users would object to any sort of official control. Nevertheless, I suspect Batman2005 was trying to make a point on being controversial and has also shown a certain disrespect for wikipedia policies (i.e. "I got blocked once, for a bullshit reason"). I am sorry if my opinion is not very clear. Regards, E Asterion u talking to me? 22:19, 5 June 2006 (UTC)Reply

Vandals translating vandalism edit

Hi: On the bormalagurski talk page, the vandalism you reverted was actually somebody's translation of what Dzoni wrote (not my translation, I don't know who did it). Interesting dilemma, thought you might like to know. Tanager 01:42, 6 June 2006 (UTC)Reply

Well, I cannot speak Serbo-Croatian but given that the admin who then took care of the case is originally from Croatia, he possibly thought it was vandalism too (the user that got blocked has a long history behind anyway). I will point this out to him. Thanks very much! E Asterion u talking to me? 06:12, 6 June 2006 (UTC)Reply

Lupin edit

Hi Asterion - you'd added "plus the Patagonian Lupinus polyphyllus" to the list of edible lupins; there is an error in there, as L. polyphyllus is a North American species, not Patagonian. I've removed this from the article for now; if you can find out which Patagonian species is so used there, please re-insert it - thanks, MPF 17:41, 10 June 2006 (UTC)Reply

Hi MPF, the Lupinus polyphyllus is definitely cultivated in the Patagonia. I was unaware it was not autochtonous though. Regards, --E Asterion u talking to me? 17:44, 10 June 2006 (UTC)Reply

I'm really sorry. I think I actually made a mistake. I confused Lupinus hirsutus or Altramuz Azul (Blue Lupin) with Lupinus polyphyllus, which is also blue (and present in Argentina, but mainly as a decorative plant and/or animal forage). This is the problem with relying on internet sources and with possible mistranslations. I apologise profusely. I will amend the article in that sense. In all cases, the plant is not autochtonous either, so it should go under Mediterranean too. Regards, --E Asterion u talking to me? 18:45, 10 June 2006 (UTC)Reply

Hi, again. To be truthful, I suspect the GBM is a hoax, but I have no means of proving it with the sparse information involved. Script can be found (for monobook skin) at User:Voice of All/UsefulJS. It marks up the contribs page with what it "thought" of edits so you know when it makes any mistakes. Out of 5000, it sometimes makes 1-3, somtimes "negating" each other. Whenever I run it on RfA, I check to make sure that there is not a key mistake causing to misread a lot of edits (this only uccurs when the same summary is used again and again and it is misread). When that does happen, I fix the JS, run it again, and then post the stats, so if you want the tool for personal use go ahead, but please don't start posting it on RfAs as there is a small chance that is will do unfair harm to the candidate.Voice-of-All 20:02, 11 June 2006 (UTC)Reply

Now I need advice. Medule has come to the article and obviously intends to sabotage it by introducing hate material (see its talk page). What should I do? By the way, I am not sure whether Medule is Purger's sock puppet. Kosovo edit

Dear Asterion, regarding the discussions we had over the past few weeks and in view of the compromises that we tried to make, I would like to ask you one final time if perhaps you can agree with the current article version of the introduction of Kosovo. There certainly are things you would like to see changed, but you have to ask yourself if they are worth starting another revert war over. Alternatively, a vote or other solution might lead to an introduction that is even further away from what you would like it to be. Looking back at the discussions and compromises I must say that the current version is very close to a good compromise. This article is currently one of the articles on Wikipedia that has been protected for the longest time (Wikipedia:List of protected pages) and even was mentioned on some websites as an example related to the recent NY Times article[2]. Also, people have been wanting to add other information to this articles a number of times (See the talk archive). So, look at the article with a cool head, think of all the discussions and arguments you've heard and if you think we could lift the block without a revert war starting again, please let me know.

P.S. This message was posted at the pages of all people involved that are still active on Wikipedia. Cpt. Morgan (Reinoutr) 15:41, 20 June 2006 (UTC)Reply

Sorry, Reinoutr. I spend too long in the pub nowadays. I blame the World Cup (England tonight and Spain yesterday) :o) I will have a look tomorrow. BTW, good luck against Argentina. Cheers,

Asterion, nice game yesterday (England-Sweden). Sweden's best so far. Anyways, I agree with Reinoutr that it's time to finalize the whole Kosovo intro. issue. However, I'm not ready to go with the substandard and contrived version that is up there at the moment just because certain editors are not willing to make any real compromises. I, and you, I believe, have been willing to go with several of the compromises put forward.

My suggestion now, which I have proposed to Reinoutr (see my talk page), is to go with the latest compromise version put forward by ChrisO (following some minor grammar/language changes).

Could we push for this (inbetween World Cup games) to finally get the issue resolved?Osli73 08:28, 21 June 2006 (UTC)Reply

Asterion, you'll see that I took out the reference to Vojvodina in my adjustment of ChrisO:s proposal as I thought it was beside the point. Reinoutr asked me to put them back (see my talk page). It is perfectly legal to edit any wikipedia article anonymously. Quality of contributions is not guaranted by any type of registration where there is no any valid reference for a registered person that

  • his/her intentions are entirely honorable
  • he/she is a knowledgeable person and ready to explore the matter discussed/edited

I noticed that you are insisting on pure formalism (user registarion, 3rr, etc) not even trying to see what is the main problem in editing the articles related to the neo-nazism and the WWII past - a bunch of very agresive and primitive people are following these formalisms you are insisting on them in order to whitewash, lie, block any serious attempt to edit or write an article.

So, please, avoid selling cheap pieces of advice and false care about quality of the articles. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 4.249.3.75 (talkcontribs)

You should be aware that your quoted text is simply a {{subst:welcome}} template. I hope you realise that calmly discussing things will get your point across. It seems that you are obviously not a new user, so I suspect you are simply using unsigned edits to edit war. Whatever your reasons, this is unacceptable. A short Esperanzial update edit

As you may have gathered, discussions have been raging for about a week on the Esperanza talk page as to the future direction of Esperanza. Some of these are still ongoing and warrant more input (such as the idea to scrap the members list altogether). However, some decisions have been made and the charter has hence been amended. See what happened. Basically, the whole leadership has had a reshuffle, so please review the new, improved charter.

As a result, we are electing 4 people this month. They will replace JoanneB and Pschemp and form a new tranche A, serving until December. Elections will begin on 2006-07-02 and last until 2006-07-09. If you wish to run for a Council position, add your name to the list before 2006-07-02. For more details, see Wikipedia:Esperanza/June 2006 elections.

Thanks and kind, Esperanzial regards, —Celestianpower háblame 16:00, 23 June 2006 (UTC)Reply

Prishtina edit

Hmm, Demographic_history_of_Prishtina is a tiny article containing info moved from the Prishtina article. I have a very good reason that the article's sole reason is because it shows how Albanians gradually overwhealmed the City over the ages. I think that this might be offensive to the Kosovar Albanians, especially now, regardless of the fact that it's true. however, it's still tiny info, and Prishtina is still a small article. --HolyRomanEmperor 16:23, 25 June 2006 (UTC)Reply

Warning conflict edit

On User talk:70.101.7.245, we both warned the same user for the same page (about two minutes apart) . I removed your warning so that we don't bite the newbies, I hope you don't mind. MichaelBillington 06:33, 29 June 2006 (UTC)Reply

Comments on Peninsular War opposing name change edit

Hi, just to say that I've added a comment in that article's discussion opposing the proposed name change to "War of Independence (Spain)". You'll find the reasons in there. Best Regards, --213.58.139.56 11:38, 29 June 2006 (UTC)Reply
