Nambiar

edit

Hi Ambalavasi! I see that you have reverted my edit, and claiming that I do not practice what I preach, being truthful. Please tell me what truth I have distorted or what fantasies I have created because I too notice that the Ambalavasi article is not exactly unbiased.

Ambalavasi Nambiar

edit

Thanks for you comments. What i am trying to say is, Tiyyadi nambiars are a part of Nair-nambiars. And the pushpaka Nambiar- which you refer, is nothing but Nambisan only. At some places Nambisans are called Nambiars, but you should not generalize it. Nambiar in ambalavasi sect refers to Mizhavu Nambiar. This is my view. Any way let us keep the article like that , i will also try to see the matter closely. Someone is putting so many nonsenses in Nair nambiar, thats ok, but he is writing nonsense about Ambalavasi nambiars also, really psychic fellow. i do remember Vivekananda's word "kerala is a lunatic asylum". And please note that generally one write in the last part of a talk page not in the beginning. Thank You. Sreekanthv 09:08, 13 August 2006 (UTC)Reply

Thanks for the info. Let me do my own research. I you want to say about the other two nambiars you can do that but do it in another paragraph. Let me confirm it. Thanks for the research. I dont clean my talk page SORRY, i will try! Sreekanthv 08:20, 14 August 2006 (UTC)Reply

Thiyyadi Nambiars

edit

The way in which Tiyyattu and the performing castes - tiyyattunni and tiyyadi nambiars are described by Kottarathil Sankunni it appears that both are of equal status tho.ugh they do not intermarry. If that is so Tiyyattuuni being ambalavasi tiyyadi nambiars should also be. i dont claim to be an expert on the subject

--Unnikn 15:50, 20 August 2006 (UTC)Reply

I think you are correct, but it will be a real mess, if we include Tiyyadi Nambiar in this already problamatic Nambiar article. Instead we can add about Tiyyadi Nambiars in Ambalavasi, if that is true. See when someone say "Nambiar" it usually refers to nair-nambiar or Ambalavasi nambiar.so we have to be careful. Bhadrakali Tiyyattu

edit

What I am writing below is only from my personal knowledge. As it is more than 30 years since I have watched a Tiyyattu performance, this may contain errors. So I thought that others may like to look into it before it is added to the encyclopedia

Bhadrakali Tiyyattu is a ritualistic dance for normally performed in Bhadrakali temples mostly in Kottayam, Ernakulam, Alappuzha, Pathanamthitta districts. Pallippurathu Kavu at Kottayam (family temple of Kottarathil Sankunni) and Vanarkavu at Madakkathanam, near Thodupuzha are two of the places where tiyyattu is performed during annual festivals. It is also performed as an offering at temples and houses.

The performance has three parts - preparation of the kalam (Kalamezhuthu), singing songs in praise of Bhadrakali and the performance of the dance. Kalamezhuthu is done during the day using natural coloured powders on the floor. An elaborate picture of Bhadrakali is normally made. The singing of the songs take place after the Kalamezhuthu is over in front of it and may last up to three hours. For the dance a male member dresses up as Bhadrakali, a creation of Shiva. In the performance she is just back from killing Darika and is telling the events to Shiva who is symbolised by the lighted lamp. As she was affected by small pox and is having the marks on her face she has her back to the lamp almost throughout the performance.

Shree Bhadra Kalasamajam, Kottayam did some efforts to revive and reform the art but it did not succeed.

Re : Bhadrakali Tiyyattu

edit

I have heard of some kalari panicker families of valluvanad who were engaged in kalamezhuthu of temples (hence called 'kalari' panicker), notably the thirumaandhaamkunnu temple. Are they considered as Ambalavasis? Could someone throw some light on the matter, please.

Bhadrakali tiyyattu - article

edit

I agree that we can put it up now and see the suggestions coming up. I have only a casual interest in the subject. But would like to have the encyclopedia containing the most authentic information.

S Damodaran Unni has been listed as a performer of tiyyattu. Though I knew him for long, I am not sure whether he was a regular performer of tiyyattu. Probably, Sankaran Unni, Madiyappalli Madom, Talayolaparambu, could have been listed as a performer of tiyyattu. Damodaran Unni has been the President of Sri Bhadrakalasamajam for about 20 years. --Unnikn 17:55, 26 August 2006 (UTC)Reply

Ambalavasi article

edit

Hello Ambalavasi, I had added certain details about Moosad and Elayathu in the table in the article. These are sourced from the Travancore Manuals of 1906 which were made by the Dewan Peishkar Nagam Aiya. Kindly let me know why they were removed with the statement that they were based on some "old editors opnions". Thanks Manu
