Categories and Sub-categories

I have noticed that you have added the Category Academics of the University of Cambridge to, for example, Reginald Hackforth and Frank George Young. Neither is necessary as both these individuals are already included in the category Academics of the University of Cambridge by virtue of being included in a sub-category, typically "Fellows of XYZ College Cambridge".

The Wikipedia convention is that articles should only be included at the lowest level category within a hierarchy.

Hi there, I was just following the standard I have found used before, particular with Category:Academics of the University of Oxford. I'm not sure there is any rule about this particular case as this is quite specific to Oxbridge. While I understand sub-categorisation, I think Category:Academics of the University of Cambridge can be seen as a WP:DUPCAT. Many of the people from that category, including ones I categorised, should be further sub-categorised to " Members of the Department of x " or "Professorship of x" but those categorises do not exist yet. Maybe it is more the case for modern academics, but they are equally a part of the university (faculties/ departments) as well as Fellows of a college and hence should be in both types of category.

Hi, I haven't looked at Oxford as all my efforts are Cambridge focussed. However, I would say that the majority of Cambridge academics who have a college identified are recorded at that level and not at the higher level. I have reviewed the guidance, but would say that the over-riding principle WP:DIFFUSE applies here. WP:DUPCAT says that where there is a "special characteristic of interest....they provide an exception to the general rule that pages are not placed in both a category and its subcategory." The example provided is helpful as it illustrates an interesting characteristic that applies to a minority of a larger set. However where Oxbridge academics are concerned affiliation to a college is the primary relationship with Oxford / Cambridge which applies to all academics of the university. I agree the same people could be further diffused by faculty. It would be perfectly acceptable for the same person to appear at both the sub-category of college fellow and faculty member, but arguably this is categorisation too far? I embarked on a such an exercise 2-3 years ago, which prompted a discussion which reached the conclusion that it was excessive. As a result it was all deleted.

Helping editing Scotland's Rural College

Hello

I am new to Wikipedia so I am sorry if I am not going about this the right way. I am looking to expand the page on Scotland's Rural College. However I understand that as a communications professional for the college I cannot make the changes myself due to bias, etc. I have been advised to make contact with page editors to see if I could work with them on expanding content, as you were the last to update I thought I would see if you could help me! I have a whole document of provisional text that could potentially be edited and uploaded.

Hi, I read your message earlier but haven't only just around to replying. Its definitely right to discuss with other users what might be controversial or seen as promotional edits. WP:COI should give a good background of the standard way of going about things where there could be conflict of interest. I'd be happy to help you out and I'm sure other users would too. You mention that you have some provisional text to update the article with, maybe a start would be to add this to your sandbox page (Special:MyPage/sandbox should take you to yours) and then to create a discussion at Talk:Scotland's Rural College to discuss with the community about making these changes.

I wasn't sure about adding the consulting section as I didn't know if it would meet the WP:Notability criteria. Fitzwilliam College List of Masters

Hi again

I have just noticed that you have introduced a table on the Fitz Masters' List so as to add brief biographical material about each master. I don't think this is appropriate for two reasons:

1) It is not in keeping with the article title which indicates it is to be a list only; it strays into the territory that properly belongs to the articles on the individuals concerned, all of which are hyperlinked; and

2) It makes this article inconsistent with the master list articles for the other colleges.

Hi, sorry I did not think it would be controversial. My main reasoning was to remove the duplication at the Fitzwilliam College page with the list of masters, while there exists a separate list page. I've usually followed the example of List_of_Principals_and_Fellows_of_Jesus_College,_Oxford and similar for list pages, as that is a featured list I did not see adding the table added as a problem. I'm not sure that lists are supposed to be "engaging and interesting"! A list is a list - it's a jumping off point for the interested person to go to other places. This list is now out of line with all the other Cambridge colleges; I haven't looked at the Oxford lists, other than the one you have pointed out. As a Cambridge man (a Fitzbilly as it happens!) Engaging and interesting in the sense that people would want to look at them and perhaps gain some knowledge of the background of the master. By all means ask for other opinions about it.
