Graphs in PIIGS article

Thanks for adding the graphs, but they need some explanation before they can be useful. Could you please explain what they are supposed to be illustrating? One of the graphs isn't even in English. Wjousts (talk) 12:49, 2 April 2010 (UTC)

Von Neumann and economics

Alex, do you agree that convex sets, separating hyperplanes, duality, and fixed-point theorems are the main tools of economics (of course differential calculus remains important, but it too has evolved ...)? (It's clear that von Neumann pushed those ideas earlier and with greater effect than others, except perhaps Kantorovich, whose influence was limited by the cold war.) The New Palgrave's articles on convexity (past and current volume) probably have such a statement. I would look at the New Palgrave's entry on von Neumann or the Dore volume on John von Neumann and economics for a statement of synthesis.

It may be useful to tone down the language, of course, even if similar statements be made by Samuelson or Arrow (writing in Dore, ed.).  Kiefer.Wolfowitz 19:36, 11 May 2011 (UTC)

You say that your are an economist, and you seem most interested in Marxist economics. You might like to look at books by Ian Steedman (Marx after Sraffa), Ulrich Krause, and Richard Murphy Goodwin as well as some by Japanese economist(lecture notes in mathematical economics and operations research, springer verlag, on value theory)

However, this literature has trouble with any consumer choice, and so its descriptive adequacy is limited, imho.

On the production side, it's hard to understand Leontiev models as descriptive of a modern or even industrial economy, altough it was good for the Fysiocrats! ;) At least von Neumann (with activity analysis/convex polyhedra) and Roemer's dissertation (convex sets) allow choice of techniques.

I looked at this literature more because UAW economists liked Leontiev and others claimed that the labor theory of value was important, perhaps for ethical reasons. I concluded that Marxist economics (at least value theory) was just a waste of time, I feel that I should warn you.

On the other hand, "lifetime but wayward Marxist" Goodwin and also K. Lancaster proposed interesting growth models, which are worth consideration today.
