North Carolina State Capitol
Hiya, APK. Been a while. I was just looking over the page for the North Carolina State Capitol and wuz wondering why it is under the "United States Government" stub category. It's a friggin' building after all. And a state one at that.
Other than that, the weather here's almost perfect for pictures again. I want to take a new shot of Raleigh's downtown now that the RBC Plaza is topped off and the Raleigh Convention Center is now complete. I also think an entry for the Longview (Poe) House might be good. Got any other requests? Jmturner (talk) 03:34, 21 September 2008 (UTC)
National Building Museum main image dispute
I reverted the article back to the condition it was in when I added Image 1, below. I believe this better represents the subject than the previous photo that you replaced mine with. I cite the now-inactive but still relevant appropriate illustrations: image purpose policy. Image 1 shows the National Building Museum from the front at a normal angle. It's centered and displays one of the main architectural elements of the building: the large vaulted roof and its tall windows. Image 2 is taken at an odd angle, and shows the side, not the main entrance, as does Image 1. Your reason for replacement was time the photo was taken. While Image 1 is a year or two old, the view has not changed, and IMO the quality and completeness of Image 1 easily trumps your age reference. Note that National building museum3.jpg has also been used. It is identical to Image 2 and was used in List of museums in Washington, D.C. which I also reverted to use Image 1. I am not just trying to get my photo back up; I am fully happy with somebody replacing this with something of higher quailty. I feel Image 2 does not better represent the subject at hand.

Edmonson sisters and the Pearl
Hi welcome back - After having been off in the fall, I've been finding new areas of interest since return. The Edmonson sisters make a compelling story, but I agree that there could be a separate article on the Pearl incident. If you structure it along the lines of what the book sounds like, and also with more context on Washington, DC at the time and nearby VA and MD, plus the trial afterward and efforts to account for the people sold South, I think it would be really good. It deserves its own article as the largest attempted escape of slaves at one time, which is another way to distinguish it - and to show the advance planning. One account I read (from the article) said that a failed suitor of one of the Edmonson sisters was said to have alerted authorities, who sounded an alarm and took off after the ship. It wasn't a chance suspicion by someone on a passing ship.--Parkwells (talk) 12:38, 13 January 2009 (UTC)

Vickery will have to wait till I get him a page, and Lindley, until there's more text, but the other two might be really helpful especially for people who are writing pages for them in other language Wikipedias? - Now that I know the trail beside the canal isn't the Capital Crescent, I guess I've only seen a small part of the actual CC. I walk several miles during my photo hunts, and the day I took those photos was probably a personal record. I started in Dupont, walked around Georgetown, then west on Reservoir Rd, up MacArthur Blvd (with a pointless detour down Chain Bridge Rd, and then back to MacArthur), west on Arizona, until arriving here at an entrance to the CC. From that point, we walked down the CC to Fletcher's Boathouse and began on the C&O trail. After walking what felt like 50 miles, we finally made it back to Georgetown...then cabbed it home. It makes my feet tired just reliving the story. I've never seen the Dalecarlia. Actually, I haven't seen much of Maryland period. I'll have to rent a bike and check it out. - The CCT parallels the canal towpath for, I dunno, 2 miles out of Georgetown. For a mile or so they're right side by side. The towpath is, I think, nicer along that stretch but isn't quite as good for a bike. You should take a ride up the Trail! It's very nice, and quite relaxing (at least until you penetrate the suburban back yard leg, which is often heavily trafficked). The tunnel isn't much - I see it has its own entry - but it's fun to come across if you're not expecting it. I have an a few old film shots of it I took when the trail opened in the '90s - I'll see if any of those are an improvement and scan them in if they are. (I *am* venturing out today, indefatigable bike commuter that I am - but the return leg is in the dark, which is a lousy time for many photos). JohnInDC (talk) 13:54, 16 January 2009 (UTC)

Hey APK, I know you got a life and are busy too.. but Aleta doesn't know how to upload any photos- she's never done it, period. Can you please, please recommend someone who may help me out? Most of the 10 pics I have waiting with permissions, GFDL, ect are for really prominent musicians who have no photos on most pages. Your image uploads
It's great that you are willing to contribute so many photos to Wikipedia, but wonder why (1) you are uploading low resolution photos. I suppose they are better than nothing, but may be of limited use in the future. (2) Could you please instead upload the photos to Wikimedia Commons? Right now, someone will need to go through the trouble of moving your photos there and deleting the ones here, and sorting them over there. If you upload them on Commons, then the German Wikipedia or projects in other languages can use them. Please let me know if you have any questions about Commons. - I have to admit that I'm not sure what the difference is between low/high resolution photos. If I want to upload a high image, what do I need to do differently? Thanks for offering to help me in this matter. In regards to Commons, I don't like dealing with that site. There's too many rude sysops and retarded polices in my opinion. I'm sorry if you have run into rude admins on Commons. But, uploading them to commons will save someone from needing to move them to commons later. If you have trouble with Commons, let me know, and I can try to help. If you upload them here, maybe a bot can move them, but I'm not sure. Your photos certainly are appreciated (and I see a lot of great stuff on your Flickr page). As for low/high resolution, if you can upload the full/large size versions, that would be awesome. The larger versions are suitable if/when Wikipedia content gets reused, such as in a printed format. I see those available on your Flickr page, with the proper licensing. There are some tools (Commons:Tools) for commons that allow batch uploading and uploading directly from Flickr, which might be helpful. --Aude (talk) 19:21, 19 January 2009 (UTC)

- Ah, the high resolution issue was much simpler than I thought. I'll check out Commons again to see if the bad apples have fallen off the tree. On a side note: I want to take some pictures tomorrow of the Messiah's inauguration, but the combination of a million tourists, crowded Metro stations, cold weather, and Oprah is making me weary of trying to witness the Second Coming. It's sad that I live less than a mile from the action, but can't really get to it (typing this while hearing helicopters and sirens outside). APK is like a firecracker. - I think you would need to be in the press area in order to be close enough to get any decent photos. The only question would be if Obama walks the parade route or part of it. Otherwise, he'll be in a limousine with tinted windows. What's likely is that you will run into Obama a number of times once he is president (e.g. going to Ben's Chili Bowl). I ran into President Bush and his motorcade so many times (and not only in DC, but in NYC and in Maine!). A tip-- where are there are different versions availible, such as is often the case on Library of Congress images, please upload the largest/highest resolution when possible. Thanks! - Can you try downloading the TIFF versions from the Library of Congress? Though, Wikipedia and commons don't accept the TIFF format. So, the files need to be re-saved (and perhaps cropped) as jpg files. See this that I recently uploaded, which is 3000+ px in dimensions. I don't know what photo software you use? Very cool that you took and uploaded the picture of Miner Teachers College for the Normal School for Colored Girls article. GULC images on Commons
Just to nitpick, if the Judiciary Square neighborhood stops at I-395, then the Georgetown University Law Center campus would not be included, as it's on the other side of I-395. That's all. Cheers, Postdlf (talk) 20:29, 10 February 2009 (UTC)
- How dare you nitpick me? *nitpicks back* I kid, I kid. :-P You're correct in regards to the "official" boundaries of Judiciary Square, but the neighborhood surrounding GULC is one of those grey areas (well, it's pink on the map but you know what I mean). It's kind of like trying to figure out what neighborhood 1575 Q Street, NW belongs in (Logan, Dupont, Borderstan perhaps?) or the Hotel Rouge. Anyway, according to dc.gov real estate records the Gewirz Student Center is located in Ward 6. After looking at my options, I picked what was behind door #4 (cause Union Station isn't a neighborhood, IMHO). This was a long and linkilicious reply, but I'm bored. Cheers.
