Hello and question

Hi Accedie, how are you? Any interesting news from WMF-land? I was wondering if you'd be interested in helping with a copyedit of an article I've been working on. A very dry, scholarly topic :) I started working on it during my Rfa and I think I've finally got it in decent shape, hopefully reviewers will agree. It's a bit more lighthearted than Meth Mouth or the KKK (my last two projects)--I think it might be a good April 1 TFA, actually. That's a long way ahead though. Thanks for your compliments, it's great to be appreciated. I've learned from a lot of good teachers :) I had heard of this group years back (probably on Wikipedia) but Mathew happened to poke me about it and I saw that an academic had recently published a sizable book chapter on them. That gave me enough foundation to write a decent summary of it. Hopefully the FAC folks will like it too. Sentences beginning with in

Generally, sentences are more formal and well-written when they don't begin with 'in'. Which, for example, is the better sentence:

• 'In 2003, Spears recorded an answer song' or
• 'Spears recorded an answer song in 2003'?

Personally for me it's the latter. I find the first sentence to be written back-to-front. Till 11:19, 13 November 2012 (UTC)

GOCE November drive wrap-up

Guild of Copy Editors November 2012 backlog elimination drive wrap-up Participation: Thanks to all who participated! Out of 38 people who signed up this drive, 33 copy-edited at least one article. Final results, including barnstars awarded, are available here. All the barnstars have now been distributed. Progress report: We achieved our primary goal of clearing November and December 2011 from the backlog. End of Year Events from the Guild of Copy Editors The Guild of Copy Editors invites you to participate in its events: The December 2012 Copy Edit of the Month Contest is currently in the submissions stage. Submit your best December copy edit there before the end of the month. Submissions end, and discussion and voting begin, on January 1 at 00:00 (UTC). When I saw that your user page says you're glad to be asked for copy-editing, I was delighted. On top of that, I am not a native speaker of English! I hope you will find some time for the recently created articles about the slavery abolition activist Kathleen Simon, Viscountess Simon, and the anti-war activist Catherine Courtney, Baroness Courtney of Penwith. Hello! Apologies for the delay in getting back to you. I've taken a look at both articles – it's probably the trickiest part of Wikipedia writing to avoid following the style and structure of sources too closely, especially on topics with few reliable sources available. I think what might help is restructuring the information a bit to make it less dependent on the narrative arc presented in the sources. I'll take a crack, but feel free to revert me if you don't like the changes or if I inadvertently end up plagiarizing the sources even more (I don't have access to them, so I don't know if I'm just making things worse...). No need to apologize. I did find it tricky and when the issue was brought up, I must admit I was somewhat disappointed. I've revamped the article about Lady Simon completely, but I was not lucky enough to find other sources for the article about Lady Courtney and only managed to do this. You'll probably be more successful in restructuring the information and I'll just make sure that we don't fall into a vicious circle of close paraphrasing. Thank you for encouraging me! Glad you approve! I did a bit of shuffling & condensing at Lady Courtney, too. Take a look and make sure it's okay. Still need to expand the lead on that one, too. You and I have the same article writing style – I always forget about the lead as I focus on fleshing out an article, and then I have to go back and summarize everything. Just a brief note. If you copy edit an article, make sure you do it in the correct version of English for that article! You added a heading with the word 'labor' in it.
