TALK ARCHIVE FOR 2007-2012

Welcome!

Hello, A12n, and welcome to Wikipedia! Thank you for your contributions. I hope you like the place and decide to stay. Here are some pages that you might find helpful:

I hope you enjoy editing here and being a Wikipedian! Please sign your name on talk pages using four tildes (~~~~); this will automatically produce your name and the date. If you need help, check out Wikipedia:Questions, ask me on my talk page, or place {{helpme}} on your talk page and someone will show up shortly to answer your questions. Again, welcome!  --G. Campbell 04:21, 2 June 2007 (UTC)

Additional tips

Here's some extra tips to help you get around in the 'pedia!

  • If you want to play around with your new Wiki skills the Sandbox is for you.
  • You can sign your name using three tildes (~). If you use four, you can add a datestamp too. Five will get you the datestamp only.
  • You may want to add yourself to the new user log.
  • If you ever think a page or image should be deleted, please list it at the votes for deletion page. There is also a votes for undeletion page if you want to retrieve something that you think should not have been deleted.
  • If you're still entirely confused, or would like to get a better grasp of your wikipedia skills, and you have an IRC client (or don't mind getting one), check out the Bootcamp. It's not what it sounds like, but it is fun and can help you with your editing skills.
  • If you're bored and want to find something to do, try the Random page button in the sidebar, or check out the Open Task message in the Community Portal.

Happy Wiki-ing.Kf4bdy talk contribs

PS: This is not a bot and you did nothing to prompt this message. This is just a friendly welcome by a fellow Wikipedian.

Kurów on Bambara Wikipedia

Could you please write a stub http://bm.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kur%C3%B3w - just a few sentences based on http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kur%C3%B3w ? Only 2-5 sentences enough. Please.

PS. Article about Kurów is already on 133 languages. Pietras1988 21:29, 6 March 2007 (UTC)

Note to folks requesting translations

I've received a couple of requests for help with specialized translations for bm.wikipedia.org (above) and ff.wikipedia.org (contributor deleted). In general I'm sympathetic to efforts to contribute to these and other smaller editions of Wikipedia, however my personal priorities are development of more basic content before more specialized content. I have a lot of potential basic topics I would (and hopefully will eventually) contribute articles for on the bm & ff Wikipedias, but even those are waiting for the moment. I could also add specialized content that interests me personally as well, but that would be much later, as I don't see that as priority for development of these Wikipedias either. So, an article on for instance Kurów, Poland, or a Christian sect in China might be nice additions to these Wikipedias (and I encourage you to work on them if you want), but I hope you'll understand if I don't act on these until we have some more descriptions of basic geography, world religions, as well as aspects of history and science etc. --A12n 21:51, 5 June 2007 (UTC)

Scouting in Malawi

Can you please help render "Be Prepared", the Scout Motto, into Chichewa? Thanks! Chris 01:24, 15 August 2007 (UTC)

I've passed this question on and will advise if there is an answer. --A12n 19:57, 20 August 2007 (UTC)

Open Society Initiative for Southern Africa

This is an automated message from CorenSearchBot. I have perfomed a web search with the contents of Open Society Initiative for Southern Africa, and it appears to include a substantial copy of http://www.soros.org/about/foundations/southernafrica. For legal reasons, we cannot accept copyrighted text or images borrowed from other web sites or printed material; such additions will be deleted. You may use external websites as a source of information, but not as a source of sentences.

This message was placed automatically, and it is possible that the bot is confused and found similarity where none actually exists. If that is the case, you can remove the tag from the article and it would be appreciated if you could drop a note on the maintainer's talk page. CorenSearchBot 00:39, 20 August 2007 (UTC)

Open Society Initiative for Southern Africa

A tag has been placed on Open Society Initiative for Southern Africa, requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under the criteria for speedy deletion, because the article seems to be blatant advertising which only promotes a company, product, group, service or person and would need to be fundamentally rewritten in order to become an encyclopedia article. Please read the general criteria for speedy deletion, particularly item 11, as well as the guidelines on spam.

If you can indicate why the subject of this article is not blatant advertising, you may contest the tagging. To do this, please add {{hangon}} on the top of the page and leave a note on the article's talk page explaining your position. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but don't hesitate to add information to the article that would help make it encyclopedic, as well as adding any citations from reliable sources to ensure that the article will be verifiable. Feel free to leave a note on my talk page if you have any questions about this. Pyrospirit (talk · contribs) 00:42, 20 August 2007 (UTC)

I responded already on the talk page. Actually I'm surprised at this, since OSISA is related to organizations already with bonafide articles in WP. What did the bot see that turns its eyes red like that? ;) --A12n 00:51, 20 August 2007 (UTC)
I deleted because it appears to have been copied from here which has a copyright notice on it and, therefore, is not compatible with the GFDL. I don't have any problem with you rewriting the article in your own words if you think you can establish notability etc. If you need a copy of the deleted version moved to your userpace to do this, I will provide it as long as you rewrite the copyvio section asap. Cheers, Sarah 11:39, 20 August 2007 (UTC)
Actually, on second look, the copied section is in quotation marks but it isn't referenced properly. I'm going to move it here User talk:A12n/OSISA. Can you please make sure the quote is referenced properly before moving it back into the mainspace? It would be better if you rewrote and expanded it a bit because nearly the whole article is a quote and I don't think that will pass the new page people. Sorry for the misunderstanding on the copyvio comment above. Sarah 11:50, 20 August 2007 (UTC)
Thanks for the review and saving this to my user page, which facilitated restoring the OSISA page w/ modifications. I confess to being a bit put off by the process - I've made a lot of contributions over the last year but make a well-intentioned mis-step and watch out! Basically this article fills a gap, since it describes a bonafide NGO affiliated with the Open Society Institute of the Soros Foundation and similar to OSIWA. Not sure what the bots have access to but if you consider the related edits I did yesterday, they were intended to place the existing OSIWA and the new (and previously missing) OSISA articles in the network they belonged in. Now users can find all and follow links etc. All the best. --A12n 19:31, 20 August 2007 (UTC)
No problems and thanks for fixing up the referencing. The bot picked it up as a copyvio because most of the article (the quote) was the same as text from another site. Anyway, it's looking good now. Cheers, Sarah 00:49, 21 August 2007 (UTC)

Portuguese

I'm really interested in the Portuguese language. Just check out my user page and talk page. To keep up with continuous updates, please put a watch on both. Have fun! :)

The African school of Development Communication

Hi. I'm working on revisions for the Development communication article, and I noticed your interest in the article. I also noticed that you're from Africa, and I'm afraid I'm not very knowledgable about the history of DevCom practice and theory from the African School/Perspective. For now I'm using Manyozo's (2006) retrospective on development communication as a basis for rewriting a more balanced history of the practice. Perhaps you'd like to add to what I come up with later today? (I'm still working on the text.) Also, I was thinking of spinning off the various schools of development communication into their own articles, and I'm afraid my knowledge of the African school will not suffice for me to be able to create a credible article. Thanks. Alternativity (talk) 07:04, 12 December 2007 (UTC)

I've noticed the work you (and some others) have been putting into that article - thanks. Actually I'm not from or located in Africa, though I lived in West Africa for a number of years and my regional focus in international development is Africa. I can't comment authoritatively on African approaches as a school. There are links as you note with use of radio (and recent trends for more local radio stations, and area that is relatively well developed in parts of the continent). Going further back there would be approaches emphasizing top-down delivery of knowledge or edicts, as well as some community development models. More recently participatory methods are the mantra - a productive step generally but sometimes being used to justify ends. I'll see if I can add something later. --A12n (talk) 01:09, 14 December 2007 (UTC)

International Year of Languages

A tag has been placed on International Year of Languages, requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under the criteria for speedy deletion, because it is a very short article providing little or no context to the reader. Please see Wikipedia:Stub for our minimum information standards for short articles. Also please note that articles must be on notable subjects and should provide references to reliable sources that verify their content.

Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself. If you plan to expand the article, you can request that administrators wait a while for you to add contextual material. To do this, affix the template {{hangon}} to the article and state your intention on the article's talk page. Feel free to leave a note on my talk page if you have any questions about this. Blanchardb-MeMyEarsMyMouth-timed 02:32, 31 December 2007 (UTC)

My head is spinning, that was so fast. This is a bonafide article that took me a few minutes to get the basic references together on. With all due respect the bot acted too fast and the speedy deletion category is totally unwarrented.--A12n (talk) 02:40, 31 December 2007 (UTC)

Articles for deletion nomination of Animal and veterinary terms in Karimojong

I have nominated Animal and veterinary terms in Karimojong, an article that you created, for deletion. I do not think that this article satisfies Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion, and have explained why at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Animal and veterinary terms in Karimojong. Your opinions on the matter are welcome at that same discussion page; also, you are welcome to edit the article to address these concerns. Thank you for your time.

Please contact me if you're unsure why you received this message. Pichpich (talk) 19:08, 1 August 2010 (UTC)

I caught up with this after it had been deleted. Have to wait to see what becomes of it via interwiki to comment, but to the extent that Wikipedia is a reference, this would seem to be something worthwhile. Moreover, as a sortable table (a nice feature of MediaWiki) it has a different kind of utility than a plain list or the terms broken out into a kind of bilingual dictionary format. Anyway, I have put the table on a user page so that it can be accessed and adapted for other uses.--A12n (talk) 15:30, 22 September 2010 (UTC)

Translation task force

Are you interested in being involved? I am at Wikimania.Doc James (talk · contribs · email) (please reply on my talk page) 20:48, 14 July 2012 (UTC)

We are concentrating on 80 high importance heavily viewed medical articles. This project involves first improving and than translating the content in to as many other languages as possible.
TWB is leading the translation aspect of the project and is looking for volunteers to help. I am coordinating efforts at WP:TTF and we are looking for help adding the translated content to the appropriate Wiki and improving the concentration before translation. Quick wrap - this conversation has moved off this page and onto email. Am trying to assist with contacts for funding and plan to help identify priority African languages for this project.--A12n (talk) 11:45, 1 September 2012 (UTC)

You're invited to Masterpiece Museum Edit-a-Thon!

"Masterpiece Museum" Edit-a-Thon at the Smithsonian American Art Museum

The Smithsonian American Art Museum and Wikimedia DC present the "Masterpiece Museum" Edit-a-Thon. Drawing from their vast vaults of art, the caretakers of the Smithsonian American Art Museum have meticulously drawn forth canvas jewels to import into Wikimedia Commons and Wikipedia articles. The museum directors and staff are excited about this project, and would love to have experienced Wikimedians help in the effort! Kirill [talk] 17:55, 29 July 2012 (UTC)

Wikimedia Indigenous Languages

Good day, I saw you mentioned your involvement with developing Wikipedias in African languages on Meta and thought that you might be interested by the creation of Wikimedia Indigenous Languages, an international body for the coordination of projects to develop small and endangered languages Wikimedia projects. Thanks, Amqui (talk) 17:36, 31 August 2012 (UTC)

Thanks for the heads up. I have added my username and look forward to contributing. As indicated in my line on the project page, I am interested not only in African languages, but also in identifying world regional themes (the challenges faced by African languages, by indigenous languages in the Americas, by "lesser-used languages" in Europe, and by minority languages in Asia are in some ways similar, but in other respects different), and in learning across the world regions to identify or develop "best practices."--A12n (talk) 11:40, 1 September 2012 (UTC)

Disambiguation link notification for September 3

Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. Wikipedia appreciates your help. We noticed though that when you edited Bafour, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page Berber (check to confirm | fix with Dab solver). Such links are almost always unintended, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of "Did you mean..." article titles. Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.

Backstage at the Smithsonian Libraries

Backstage at the Smithsonian Libraries is part of Wikipedia Loves Libraries 2012, the second annual continent-wide campaign to bring Wikipedia and libraries together with on-site events. Running this fall through October and November, libraries (and archives) will open their doors to help build a lasting relationship with their local Wikipedian community.

Organized by Wikimedia DC, this event will take place on October 12, 2012, and will include new editor training, a "backstage pass" tour of the National Museum of Natural History, and an edit-a-thon. Everyone is welcome to attend!

Wikimedia DC Holiday Party and Wiki Loves Monuments Exhibition

Please join Wikimedia DC and four other local media nonprofits—the National Press Club's Young Members Committee, 100Reporters, IRE and the Fund for Investigative Journalism—in winding down another year with a night of well-mannered frivolity.

The festivities will take place on Friday evening from 6:30 PM to 9:00 PM in the Zenger Room on the 13th Floor of the National Press Club, located on 529 14th Street NW, near Metro Center. There will be meat and vegetarian appetizers as well as a cash bar with specially reduced drink prices all night long. In addition, we will be exhibiting the finalists of the Wiki Loves Monuments photo contest at the event.

Hope to see you there! Kirill [talk] 04:41, 13 December 2012 (UTC)

Thanks for the heads up, it's appreciated. Actually I was not aware that Pastoralist did not automatically redirect to Pastoralism, which IMO would still be the best solution. Please see the suggestions at Talk:Pastoralist (discussion to ensue there, please.)--A12n (talk) 15:11, 23 December 2012 (UTC)
