Proposed deletion of Global Studies Consortium edit

The article Global Studies Consortium has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

The coverage (references, external links, etc.) does not seem sufficient to justify this article passing Wikipedia:General notability guideline and the more detailed Wikipedia:Notability (companies) requirement. If you disagree and deprod this, please explain how it meets them on the talk page in the form of "This article meets criteria A and B because..." and ping me back. Thank you,

While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, content or articles may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the article to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. Fulfulde edit

Hey there. I noticed your comments on the talk page of Fula language and I thought you might be able to help: the page has NO information on Fula phonetics at all and it's not the most accessible research topic. Are you familiar with any varieties of Fula and linguistics? Do you know anyone who is if you are not? Thanks, Ogress 06:21, 6 March 2016 (UTC)Reply

@Ogress:, I speak Fula from having learned it in Mali and Guinea (and used it somewhat in Niger), so also have a sense of variations. There is actually a lot published on the language, focusing on one or another variety, which I believe should have ample info on phonetics. Not much online that I can think of however. Will try to look into this and reply more fully later. Another possibility, depending on your level of interest, would be to post a question on H-West-Africa, an H-Net list. On the talk p.for the deleted article, you said, with respect to my close for delete, "@DGG: Surprised that this article was deleted. Was the information about IHLA's being awarded the Linguapax Prize not considered? Although the article did need some work, the organization clearly was acknowledged beyond its local area of activity." (That's not really the ideal place to discuss it, for nobody else will notice--the usual place to ask is on the closer's talk page)

I did this on the basis that there is no evidence that winning the prize is sufficient for notability. But I see the information about the prize was added very late in the discussion, and it might be possible to say there was a need to extend the discussion to consider it. Revisiting the article and the discussion,I continue to think it is not enough, and that the article is so much devoted to matters of no concern except to members of the group, that it would be very unlikely to pass a second afd in its current state.

As I assume you may want to work on it, I am undeleting and moving to your userspace as User:A12n/International and Heritage Languages Association (IHLA). If you think you can fix it, please do, and ask me to look at it and move it to mainspace. If you decide it is not fixable, please list it for speedy deletion as G7. DGG ( talk ) 06:58, 14 March 2016 (UTC)Reply

Thanks, @DGG:: Will look at what can be done. Fwiw, I noticed in the same topical area of heritage languages in Canada some interesting efforts relating to Heritage Languages in Toronto (including 3 other pages linked from it). Taken together with the page on Saskatchewan Organization for Heritage Languages, there seems to be a greater attention on Wikipedia to the phenomenon of some tongues as "heritage languages" in Canada than in other countries. Even though a number of languages that can be considered heritage languages in the US, for example, have pages on en.wikipedia, they don't seem to be attached to this concept. May need attention from Wikipedia:WikiProject Languages?--A12n (talk) 15:12, 14 March 2016 (UTC)Reply
The reason specific topics are not covered is because nobody has thought to write the articles. There is no central service directing people what to do --they do what they want to do. The volunteers working at WP are heavily weighted towards a certain ranges of interest. As a supplement to this, there are campaigns led by individuals or groups, sometimes in alliance with outside groups, to cover particular areas or to improve the quality of the existing articles in an area-- an example is art+feminism. But the best way to get things sstarted in aan area is to write some articles yourself, and then look around for people who ant to do others.

This is different from the question of whether there is a collective prejudice against certain topics, and there is. Some of it is based on the disgusting notion of "political correctness", some on not offending particular groups strongly represented here, some as a result of the active efforts of a few people to try to prevent articles on a topic area, some on social or cultural prejudice of the conventional sort , and some just plain erratic.

BTW, the other article you mention is an example of promotionalism, even after extensive cleanup. I am not sure whether to fix or list for an AfD. DGG ( talk ) 01:44, 15 March 2016 (UTC)Reply

Disambiguation link notification for May 27 edit

Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. Wikipedia appreciates your help. We noticed though that when you edited Lagardère Group, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page Paradies. Such links are almost always unintended, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of "Did you mean..." article titles. Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.

Contests edit

User:Dr. Blofeld has created Wikipedia:WikiProject Africa/Contests. The idea is to run a series of contests/editathons focusing on each region of Africa. He has spoken to Wikimedia about it and $1000-1500 is possible for prize money. Would you be interested in contributing to one or assisting draw up core article/missing article lists? He says he's thinking of North Africa for an inaugural one in October. If interested please sign up in the participants section of the Contest page, thanks.♦ --Ser Amantio di NicolaoChe dicono a Signa?Lo dicono a Signa. 01:08, 21 July 2016 (UTC)Reply

Invite to the African Destubathon edit

Hi. You may be interested in participating in the African Destubathon which starts on October 15. Africa currently has over 37,000 stubs and badly needs a quality improvement editathon/contest to flesh out basic stubs. There are proposed substantial prizes to give to editors who do the most geography, wildlife and women articles, and planned smaller prizes for doing to most destubs for each of the 53 African countries, so should be enjoyable! Even if contests aren't your thing we would be grateful if you could consider destubbing a few African articles during the drive to help the cause and help reduce the massive 37,000 + stub count, of which many are rated high importance (think Regions of countries etc). If you're interested in competing or just loosely contributing, whether it's a river in Malawi, a Nigerian footballer, or a South African civil rights activist, please add your name to the Contestants/participants section. Diversity of work from a lot of people will make this that bit more special. For those of you who signed up to the North African contest, that will hopefully be held in the new year. Thanks. --MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 21:11, 6 October 2016 (UTC)Reply

Do you know Mende and Temne? And would you like to join the discussion about the existence of the Temne and how they figuire in the film Amistad? edit

There is a discussion in the article about the film Amistad concerning the number of Africans that were originally imprisoned when they were apprehend along the US coast in the 2800s. Also, those that are championing their side will not accept that there were in that group both Mende and Temne people, not just Mende. This can be pointed out in both the non-English language used in the film and the content of that language. It is there contention that my reasoning is faulty because I misspelled Temne. I will go no further on that justification. These people do not know Mende or Temne therefore they are functioning under ignorance and unwilling to include the presence of both Mende and Temne in the affected group. WP is not a place for speculation or ignorance ere and yet these two traits are being held above all others because they are unable to move on that they are functioning under ignorance. What can be done about this if you have anything to suggest?

One of the matters to contend with besides the language content is that film plots in WP reflect what is in the primary document--the film. They are using reviews that supposed reflect content of the film to be reflected in the plot. What they want to substantiate is not in the film therefore not only is there a problem with their documentation being secondary, the primary document does not reflect what they want to substantiate. These methods are not what are expected to be use justifiably in WP.

Thank you for any guidance in this matter.2605:E000:9143:7000:2CF0:1BBB:E1E3:52EE (talk) 22:22, 17 February 2018 (UTC)Reply

Thanks for the question; sorry for the slow reply. No I do not know any Mende or Temne. Interesting questions you raise - do you have any link to further discussion on the issue? --A12n (talk) 14:46, 10 March 2018 (UTC)Reply
