I think it was an important plot point that deserves mentioning (even if it does "bloat" the description). When Maya reaches for Miles hand, he freezes up and changes the subject to Rieslings. The kiss mentioned would not have been awkward if we explain that he was getting the "green light" (as Thomas Hayden Church puts it in the commentary) from Maya when she touches his hand.
