Notes edit

  1. ^ a b The George Washington Bicentennial half dollar was originally proposed as a traditional commemorative coin. Soon after it was proposed, the legislation was changed to authorize a circulating commemorative Washington half dollar. The legislation passed, and George Washington was to appear on the half dollar for one year in 1932. However, due to the lack of demand for half dollars caused by the Great Depression, none were minted for three years from 1930 to 1932. Instead, Washington appeared on the quarter in 1932 to commemorate the event. The Washington quarter proved to be more popular that the Standing Liberty quarter it replaced, and when quarter production resumed in 1934, the Washington design was kept, this time as a regular business strike coin.[3]
  2. ^ a b c d e f g h i j k l The US Mint considers the side with the Native American to be the reverse and the side with the covered wagon to be the obverse.[7] This is because the wagon side bears the date while the Native American side bears the mint mark, which were usually displayed on the obverse and reverse, respectively. Despite this, many numismatists, including the coin's designers Laura Gardin Fraser and James Earle Fraser, consider the obverse and reverse to be the opposite.[8]
  3. ^ a b c d e The US Mint claims that the winged figure on the reverse of the Texas Centennial half dollar is Liberty.[11]
  4. ^ a b c d e Since there is no known portrait of Daniel Boone in existence, the portrait of Boone on the Daniel Boone Bicentennial half dollar is an artist's conception by Augustus Lukemann.[12]
  5. ^ a b c d e f g h i j k The US Mint claims that the side with the perched eagle on the Arkansas Centennial half dollar of 1935–1939 and the Arkansas-Robinson half dollar of 1936 is the obverse.[15][16]
  6. ^ a b The US Mint claims that the side with the eagle on the 1935 Connecticut Tercentenary half dollar is the obverse.[20]
  7. ^ a b The US Mint claims that the side with Neptune on the 1935 Hudson Sesquicentennial half dollar is the obverse.[22]
