Frames Festival Logo 2016

Frames Festival[1] is a movie festival entirely dedicated to the Portuguese Cinema, taking place since 2013 in the Swedish cities of Stockholm, Västerås e Gothenburg.

History

edit

The first edition of the Frames Festival took place in 2013 at Filmhuset in Stockholm, between the 16th and 22nd of November[2]. This initiative originated from the efforts of a portuguese association in Stockholm, that thought that the festival could become a significant cultural gathering platform for the Portuguese community in Sweden. The Frames festival also seeks to promote and diffusethe very latest, original and creative within the Portuguese cinematographic panorama, as well as introducing new and talented Portuguese filmmakers to the Swedish public. The cinema, the main focus of the event, is broden by other cultural expressions, such as literature, debates and music events.

In addition to its vocation for cultural integration between Portuguese and Swedish culture, the project also aims to serve as a window of opportunity for expansion and strengthening of cultural, social and trade relations between Sweden and Portugal, promoting the necessary and incipient exchange of ideas between our cultures, each increasingly close and mixed in a globalized world.

Memory was the underlying subject of the 2014 edition that took place between the 24th and 29th of November at Filmhuset in Stockholm, with also a day session in Gothenburg, at Bio Roy movie theater[3].

Ricardo Trêpa, actor and grandson of Manoel de Oliveira, the most acclaimed portuguese director, was present in 2016 at FramesFestival

In 2016, under the theme Roots , the festival spread for the first time through three different cities, namely Stockholm, Västerås e Gothenburg, starting on the 22nd of February, and having the last seesion on the 6th of March[4] [5]. This edition placed its focus on what is the concept of Family, through the exhibition of contemporary movies, as well as documentaries produced in Portugal and it addressed questions like “What is memory? What does the act of remembering entails? How do we relate to our past in individual and collective ways?” . Under Memory the feminist presence within Portuguese cinema, the politics of colonialism, the AIDS epidemic, and also the 40 year anniversary of the Portuguese revolution (which meant the end of the 48 year-long-dictatorship in Portugal) were subject of reflexion of the movies presented.

Social Tales is the name of the fourth edition of the Portuguese Film Festival in 2017 . It will take place in Stockholm from the 18th to the 21st of February, Västerås e Gothenburg, similarly to the 2016 edition. Frames 2017 will screen eight selected films, sharing the work of talented and awarded filmmakers, allowing new, interested audiences to get to know Portuguese films. It will also include, for the first time, a Competitive Section. This competition is targeted at both professional and amateur filmmakers and aims to bring an element of public participation and engagement to the festival. Any profession or amateur movie director can submit a movie, as along as the producer/director is portuguese, or that the movie takes place in Portugal.
