Kozo Kanatani (金谷幸三) is a Japanese classical guitarist. In addition to conventional classical guitar, he plays 11-string alto guitar made by Japanese luthier Yoshimitsu Hoshino. He has released 5 CDs in Japan.
Biography
editKozo Kanatani was born in Kobe, Japan in 1966 and began the guitar lesson at age of 10 under the direction of Katsuo Kobayashi and Ichiro Okamoto. In 1984, he moved to France where he studied at the Conservatoire National Superieur de Musique de Paris under Alexandre Lagoya and Carel Harms, and at the Universite Musicale Internationale de Paris under Michel Sadanowsky. He also participated in Leo Brouwer’s masterclasses in France and The Netherlands. During his studies abroad, he appeared on Radio France’s modern music program and was involved in the performance of many new works. In Paris in 1989 at the Salle Cortot, he gave his debut recital with a modern music program.
His wide repertoire spans music from the Baroque, Classical, and modern periods. Since 2011, in addition to conventional classical guitar, he started performing on the 11-string alto guitar to further expand his soundscapes.
He lives in Nara prefecture with his family. He regularly performs in concerts and at various public and private venues mainly in Kansai region while he splits his time teaching aspiring students.
Awards
editKozo Kanatani has won numerous awards in domestic and international competitions, including:
- First place at the 2nd Chanterelle International Guitar Competition
- Third place at the 43rd Tokyo International Guitar Competition (the highest among Japanese guitarists).
