"Starting Over" is a song recorded by American recording artist and actress Jennifer Lopez for her seventh studio album Love? (2011).

Background

edit

Following the commercial and critical failure of her sixth studio album Brave (2007)—and while pregnant with twins Max and Emme—Lopez began working on new music for a future project in 2008.[2] The project was kept under wraps until February 2009 when a new song from the recording sessions titled "Hooked on You" leaked online.[3] Lopez addressed the leak on her official website in May 2009, stating that "I'm always excited about my music and this ["Hooked on You"] is one of a few tracks I'm currently working on. I'm flattered by everyone's interest in the track and really excited for you to hear the real thing..."[4] Following the leak of "Hooked on You", "One Love" and "What Is Love?" (later re-titled "(What Is) Love?") were subsequently leaked online in May. The leaked songs were, at the time, meant to appear on a greatest hits album; that later turned into a studio album.[5] The following month, Lopez told MTV's Larry Carol that the songs hinted at the musical direction of her then-upcoming seventh studio album. She also stated that she was keen to finish the album and several singles, with a potential release date for the end of 2009.[2] Lopez released "Louboutins", a song written and produced by The-Dream and Tricky Stewart, as the project's lead single in November 2009.[6] However, upon release, the song failed to garner enough airplay to chart, despite topping the US Billboard Hot Dance Club Songs chart.[7] Lopez subsequently left Epic Records in February 2010, citing that she had fulfilled her contractual obligations and now wished to release Love? under a new label.[8] Her departure from the label temporarily halted production on the album, however upon signing a new contract with Island Def Jam Music Group, recording resumed on the album.[9] The New York Daily News revealed that Lopez would be taking some of the records recorded under Sony Music Entertainment to her new label so that they could be included on the album.[10]

Music and lyrics

edit

"Starting Over" is a song with a length of four minutes and two seconds (4:02). The song features an "urgent, almost-militaristic beat" that consists of strong military beats.[11][12] The song has been cited as having a "nice summer breeze feel" with a serious "Let's get on the beach and dance" tempo.[13] Lyrically, "Starting Over" speaks of trying to avoiding a break-up.[11] "In a similar tone" to Mariah Carey's song "Breakdown", Lopez delivers a "heartfelt account" of the "range of emotions that accompany a failed relationship".[14]

Lopez, who "has explored the topic of love since the start of her career", told MTV News, at album-release event in May 2011, that out of all the songs on Love?, she was most excited for people to hear "Starting Over", "(What Is) Love?", "One Love", "Papi" and "Run the World". The songs she mentioned have all been cited as being about her relationship with Anthony. Lopez, herself, stated that: "They all express different moments in love and that's what this album was about. You know, sometimes it's difficult, sometimes it's amazing, sometimes overwhelming, sometimes you just don't know what to do. And I hope that I captured all of that on this album". MTV News noted that on the songs, Lopez might be "giving us some insight about what she was dealing with in her personal life in the months before it was released".[15] Following the announcement of Lopez and Anthony's split two months after the release of Love?, it was speculated that the album also contained references to the ending of their marriage.[16]

Critical response

edit

Shane Phoenix of Hot Spot gave a postive review of the song, stating that it is "ready for the radio and the beach ball" and that it brings "images of a blooming romance gone bad at Oceanside".[13]

Stephanie V. of DJ Booth gave a positive review of "Starting Over", stating that it is a "sure to strike a chord with anyone who thought they had The One, only to lose it all". She also stated that its pulsing drums, rhythmic claps and driving synths are "sure to make you want to move". She concluded by stating that she foresees the song "being the subject of many club DJ remixes" and becoming a late "Summer 2011" jam that will "make you reminisce about good times".[14]
