You might want to check out this google search to help you research and write your article: [1]. There are dozens of reviews here. I would try to pick and choose the 2-3 most reliable (those that come from reliable sources such as well respected magazines, newspapers, or journals), and cite them in your article. Also, be sure to give a neutral overview of the device. It looks like you are on the right track on this, and try to avoid original research, such as providing your own opinions on the pen. Leaving messages edit

By the way, thanks for helping out with New Page patrolling. Your work is very much appreciated. However, a few tips:

  • Be certain you leave the messages for users at their User Talk: page NOT at their User: page. Its an easy mistake to make for someone new to the project, but messages like you have been leaving rightly belong on the User Talk page...
  • Don't use UserBoxes in your signature, like the one you have been leaving referring to yourself as a New Page Patroller. The NPP is a VERY unofficial organization, and to represent yourself as a member of the group in your talk page comments implies that your comments carry some official weight. They don't... Userboxes properly belong only on YOUR userpage... See WP:SIG for more information.

Cure (medical) edit

I've reverted cure (medical) to one of your edits. Then I did some copy-editing to bring it into line with Wikipedia:Manual of Style. In particular, there were too many capital letters in section headings and the title word was not set in bold at its first appearance. I added a link to cure (medical) on the cure disambiguation page. It would be a good idea for you to find other pages that ought to link to it and put the links there. Among other things, that will help bring the page to the attention of others interested in the topic so that they can also contribute to it.

Notice that if you click on "history" you see the page's edit history, and that identifies you as the initial creator of the page. That's the proper place for such identification; it should not be within the article itself. Michael Hardy (talk) 19:09, 4 April 2008 (UTC)

I've moved the disambiguation page to Cure (disambiguation), and have merged Cure (medical) with Cure. Medical cure is the main context of "cure" and what people are most likely to be looking for when they type "cure" in the search box. The article still needs work, but it is a good start. I have found that the best, most concise guide to what Wikipedia is and how it works is the five pillars, I know understanding it has helped me quite a bit in my short time here. Hi Princess edit

Someone mentioned that you wrote a message in all caps. That really got me in trouble once, because in this type-written medium it is considered yelling. It took me awhile to realize just how seriously people take Netiquette and the quirky common courtesies that have evolved in this virtual in-print universe we call the Internet. Wikipedia even has some polite customs of its own - see Wikipedia:Etiquette - such as filling in edit summaries.

I noticed you mentioned that you are interested in becoming an admin one of these days. I'm impressed. Keep in mind that nobody who fails to use edit summaries makes it through RfA ("Requests for adminship"), as that is seen as an indicator of inexperience and immaturity (lack of regard for others) - many editors, especially admins, carefully analyze every edit made to articles, and edit summaries help them immensely to understand what is going on without having to go in and view the diffs of every single one.

Following Wikipedia's Five Pillars and being civil at all times (like refraining from yelling) is the hallmark of a good candidate for RfA.

Another link you might find helpful is Staying cool when the editing gets hot.

Don't worry about it too much - there's a lot to learn - initial stumblings are disregarded once a user has learned the ropes and has been wikified.  :) But whatever you do, don't go for RfA until you've racked up a few thousand edits, and have conferred with an experienced Wikipedian first. The most common mistake at RfA is bad timing (premature nomination).

Try Google news and Google scholar for references. VFK edit

The article wasn't speedied initially; it was deleted after an AFD discussion, and speedied a few times after that under G4 as recreated material. So the qualifications on CSD don't really apply here. If you want to create an article on VFK, you need to review the afd and find out if you can address the concerns that were raised there. If I remember correctly, the primary problem was that the article did not pass WP:WEB. There has been no substantial press coverage on the article, and thus there are no reliable sources. If you feel you can prove that the article now does pass wp:web, and can supply reliable sources for the article, you'll need to file a deletion review and make your case there. -- Vary | Talk 17:15, 26 June 2008 (UTC)

Hi. I've deleted the VFK article again. I know we talked about sources before, but the one you used was already present in the article at the time of the afd, and it wasn't found to be enough to help the game pass the criteria in WP:WEB. Those are:
  1. The content itself (in this case, VFK, and not anything else related to it, like the company that makes it or the game it was based on) has been the subject of multiple non-trivial published works whose source is independent of the site itself.
    • This criterion includes reliable published works in all forms, such as newspaper and magazine articles, books, television documentaries, websites, and published reports by consumer watchdog organizations except for the following:
      • Media re-prints of press releases and advertising for the content or site.
      • Trivial coverage, such as (1) newspaper articles that simply report the Internet address, (2) newspaper articles that simply report the times at which such content is updated or made available, (3) a brief summary of the nature of the content or the publication of Internet addresses and site or (4) content descriptions in Internet directories or online stores.
  2. The website or content has won a well-known and independent award from either a publication or organization.
  3. The content is distributed via a medium which is both respected and independent of the creators, either through an online newspaper or magazine, an online publisher, or an online broadcaster; except for:

I know you've done a lot of work on it, but honestly, the only thing you can do is look for some more sources, or wait for people to start taking notice of VFK and writing news stories about it or give it a major award. As announced in the newsletter, I've been preparing to co-coordinate a large collaboration/competition called Around the World. It was going to be run at the Awards Center, but since that no longer exists, the collaboration will be hosted somewhere else.

Around the World will begin July 15th as planned - it's location will be announced soon.

It'll be a blast. In the competition, participants will be helping to develop over 200 pages (drafts, which will be moved to article space once they are ready), using advanced tools to edit every single one of them!

This is going to be interesting.

And the event shall have awards which are being created specifically for it as we speak!

What is Around the World? edit

It's a collaboration!

A collaboration using advanced wiki-tools!

If everything goes according to plan, it will begin on July 15th.

The event is being co-sponsored by Wikiproject Lists of basic topics and WikiProject Geography, and participants will be "traveling" all around "the World" visiting each country online (here on Wikipedia and perhaps beyond) as they apply advanced wiki-tools to improve pieces of the profiles of each and every country on Earth!. Each pass through these pages is a "trip around the World..."

The set of pages we are working on is currently located at Wikipedia:WikiProject Lists of basic topics.

Each page presents essential information on each country in a topic outline format, for ease of overviewing and navigating. Most of the topics presented are linkified, which turns these pages into a hypertextual map to material about each country on Wikipedia. When completed, they shall all become part of Wikipedia's contents system.

The pages share a standard format, with the information on each country presented in the same general order. So rather than getting stuck on a single country trying to complete it, each participant works on all 200+ political entities, completing a single data item or detail across all of the pages!

For this they use advanced tools like WP:AWB, Linky, etc. It goes fast, and since others are doing this at the same time, it makes "the World" feel like a beehive, and the participants are its bees.  :) The energy is contagious.

And since you are moving from country to country, the tasks make it feel like you are traveling around the world, and you get to learn a little about every country as you do so. This approach also allows for greater efficiency, because by the time you've done 30 or so of a particular item, you've figured out how to finish it faster and more effectively (such as where to find the data or how to make adjustments), and this specialization speeds up development - but more importantly it reduces errors.

The tasks are varied, which adds even more variety to the project. Some tasks are look-ups-and-fill-ins, some are copy and paste, some are image hunts, some are maintenance adjustments, some are link fixing, some are blue-linking (creating an underlying redirect so a link turns blue), some are fact checking, etc.

During the collaboration, co-coordinators will be standing by, to lend a helping hand to participants, provide instruction and tips on how to use the tools, and help them find what they are looking for. Co-coordinators will also be using advanced tools to inspect the work of participants, and touch it up as needed, or if a task was done wrong throughout, point this out to the participant so he or she can make the necessary corrections.

Co-coordinators are working on the set of pages right now, to familiarize themselves with "the World" so they can help more effectively by the time the main event starts. But there's still lots of preparation left to be done, and we are looking for editors experienced in advanced wikitools who would like to become co-coordinators.

Do you have other sources for this? Currently, what you have is the same source that was in it during the AfD, here. What other sources do you have? The new one may not be helpful, I'm afraid, since the source is not independent of the site. The page says they're the company that created the world. Hi. I noticed that it had been deleted again. I'm afraid that the only usable new source that you added was this one. As I said, the first source was already in the article, and the second one was by the company that made the game. If a website does not meet one of the other standards of WP:WEB (for instance, winning an award), it needs to have "been the subject of multiple non-trivial published works whose source is independent of the site itself." Two is probably insufficient for that. If I were trying to re-establish an article on this subject, I'd be looking for a number of news stories that mention it. It still gets a lot of hits on google, but I didn't get anything that would help at google news ([3]) I think you did well to find the one you did! Sometimes having a lot of google hits is a problem, because it makes it harder to find the reliable ones. Vary suggested above that you might take it to deletion review if you think you assemble enough sources to meet WP:WEB. That might be a good idea. If you get together a list of sources, it should be easy enough for contributors there to determine if the article should be restored. If I were doing it, I'd probably be looking for about five solid sources that aren't connected to the company. Obviously, the more the better, but with five I think you'd stand a good chance. Obviously, if you found a fantastic source, like a review in The New York Times, you'd be more likely to succeed with less. --Moonriddengirl (talk) 02:06, 19 October 2008 (UTC)

I don't see it in the links at Special:WhatLinksHere/Virtual_Family_Kingdom or Special:WhatLinksHere/VFK. Perhaps you're thinking of the AfD? In case you aren't familiar with it, deletion review is a special process where contributors decide if a deletion debate was closed properly or "if significant new information has come to light since a deletion and the information in the deleted article would be useful to write a new article." It's also appropriate to use DRV when the article has been "salted", or protected against recreation. That space was protected, but the protection expired. Since multiple contributors have recreated this article, I've gone on ahead and reinstated the protection. This could make the deletion review process easier, as unless the space is salted contributors there may not wish to consider the matter and the creation-WP:CSD#G4 deletion cycle will continue. But, again, I wouldn't go to deletion review without some really good sources. Personally, I think it would be easier to have strong sources and have the article restored on the first try than to have to come back again later, after a first DRV has failed. --Moonriddengirl (talk) 12:02, 22 October 2008 (UTC)

Status report on the Country outlines (Around the World) project edit

Penubag has been hard at work developing awards for this project. He has completed a very professional looking medal, and is almost done with a trophy that is truly awesome - both of these awards are visually stunning.

I and a few others have been working steadily on the country outlines - one for every country of the world! They're shaping up nicely. So far, 28 of them have been moved to article space - these aren't complete, but they are complete enough to be made available for readers to benefit from them. The rest of the set still includes temporary data that was generated by template (because it matched most but not all of the countries), and before the lists can be moved to article space, all the temporary data needs to be checked for accuracy, and if incorrect it needs to be replaced with correct information.

The effort on the lists has been on 3 fronts:

  1. Working on the lists in article space to complete them so they will be good examples for editors working on the rest of the set.
  2. Adding or correcting other data (fixing redlinks, filling in blanks, etc.). The main type of work participants in "the contest" will be doing. The reason we're doing this is to get a feel for it, to develop the fastest methods for each type of task, etc.
  3. Improving the overall design and implenting changes on all 247 pages, whether in article space or not.

There has been some opposition to us running the contest based on edit counts or iterations. The concern is that we should reward quality work and not quantity, for fear of crappy edits done quickly without thought. I pointed out that the collection of pages are drafts in the Wikipedia namespace (therefore posing no danger to article space) and that most of the work needs to be done with power tools like AWB and Linky (which are specifically designed for repetitive work), but the reply was that we shouldn't set the precedent of rewarding barnstars for numerically-based tasks, and implied the threat of continuously MfD'ing the contest if we attempted to do so (like they did with the Awards Center - I was very surprised and disappointed that participants didn't step up to defend it). So we need to be careful in determining what exactly the awards will represent, and how they will be awarded.

Since rewarding iterations (passes with AWB on all of the pages in the set) are out, we really don't need the globe in stand anymore. Two awards should suffice.

Once we get started with the contest, I'd like to kick the whole thing off with a round of medals for those dedicated few who have worked hard on the project so far.

There's no need to be sorry, since I am very happy to assist Wikipedians with respect to this encyclopedia.
I know quite a bit about collaborations, projects, wiki-teams, etc.
Many wikiprojects have or support a collaboration program (a subproject, not a computer program) in which the participants of a WikiProject nominate and vote on articles in order to choose one to work on together. The winning article then becomes their "Collaboration of the week", ..."fortnight", ..."month", etc.
A collaboration's collaboration page is generally where the selection process takes place. For example, Wikipedia:Mathematics Collaboration of the Month is a collaboration page.

My idea for a Collaboration edit

Oh, thanks for the help. My idea for a project is a collaboration that checks deletion logs, finds deleted articles, and tries to figure out why they were deleted. Then, the problems can be fixed, and the articles can be rewritten. I don't know if someone already created this project, but it sounds liek a good idea to me. So you wish to resurrect articles from the dead, do you? The department that processes requests for resurrecting pages from the deletion graveyard is Wikipedia:Deletion review. The people who hang out there generally pass judgement in discussions similar to those at AfD, and they don't usually work on the articles themselves (but some do). All requests to undelete articles must go through DR.
Keep in mind that Deletion Review is itself a list of articles that people are trying to undelete. The users going through deletion review are often desperate for help to save their articles, as well as those going through AfD. AfD and DR can be very stressful, especially for newcomers. Save an editor's article from deletion, or bring it back from the dead through deletion review, and you've made a friend for life!
The WikiProject or Department that is dedicated to saving articles from deletion is the Wikipedia:Article Rescue Squadron. They generally focus on articles in AfD, so you could either expand the scope of the operations there to include saving articles that have already been deleted, or create a new "Wikipedia:Article Resuscitation Unit".
Keep in mind that the word "collaboration" has a very specific context on Wikipedia: collaborations are periodic tasks sponsored by a particular WikiProject. To see a slew of examples, search for "Wikipedia:Collaboration of the week".
So, while a WikiProject works on a particular subject or problem continuously, it's "weekly collaboration" (sometimes they are monthly) would focus on their chosen article of the week (or month), bringing people together to improve that specific page.
To create a collaboration, simply set up a collaboration subpage for the sponsoring department or WikiProject, and then add a collaboration subheading on that department's main page with an explanation and a link to the subpage. You can also provide a template that users can display on their talk page which announces the latest article in the collaboration. There are plenty of examples to model your collaboration idea after.
