The 2016–17 season will be Newcastle United's first season back in the Football League Championship following their relegation from the Premier League last season in their 124th year in existence. This season Newcastle United will participate in the Football League Championship, EFL Cup and FA Cup. The season covers the period from 1 July 2016 to 30 June 2017.

Season overview

11 May 2016: Newcastle United were relegated to the Football League Championship as rivals Sunderland won 3–0 against Everton.[1]

25 May 2016: Rafael Benítez confirmed that he will stay at the club on a three-year contract.[2]

27 May 2016: The club announced that they would travel to Ireland for a week-long training camp.[3]

1 June 2016: Fabio Pecchia confirmed that he leave the club to manage Hellas Verona.[4]

2 June 2016: A day later Mikel Antía replaced Fabio Pecchia as first team coach.[5] The club confirmed their first pre-season game against Bohemian on July 16.[6]

3 June 2016: The club confirmed that Steven Taylor will leave the club when his contract expires.[7] The also confirm that an option in Kevin Mbabu's contract has been exercised, extending the left-back's contract for a further two years. In addition, Macaulay Gillesphey, Ton Heardman and Liam Smith all agreed new professional contracts, while Stefan Broccoli, Kyle Cameron, Liam Gibson, Brendan Pearson and Callum Williams all signed their first professional contracts at the club. Academy players Luke Charman, Jamie Holmes, Jack Hunter, Sean Longstaff, Michael Newberry, Ben Smith, Dan Ward and Paul Woolston all received extensions to their scholarship deals, while fellow academy players Jamie Cobain, Louis Johnson, Adam Laidler, Ben Pollock, Lewis Suddick and Jake Trodd were all released after not being offered extensions.[8]

8 June 2016: The club confirmed a friendly match against Doncaster Rovers which will take place on 20 July 2016.[9]

22 June 2016: The fixture list for the Football League Championship were announced. Newcastle United will start at Fulham on 5 August at 19:45.[10]

23 June 2016: The club confirmed a friendly match against Vitesse which will take place on 30 July 2016.[11]

25 June 2016: The club confirmed a friendly match against KSC Lokeren which will take place on 23 July 2016.[12]

29 June 2016: Belgian goalkeeper Matz Sels joined Newcastle United on a five-year deal.[13]

1 July 2016: Dwight Gayle joins the club from Crystal Palace on a 5-year deal.[14] The club also confirmed that Andros Townsend would be going the other way around.[15] Newcastle United have signed Matt Ritchie from AFC Bournemouth.[16]

5 July 2016: The club confirmed a friendly match against Southend United which will take place on 26 July 2016.[17] The club also confirmed that captain Fabricio Coloccini would return to Argentina to join San Lorenzo, ending his eight-year association with the club.[18]

8 July 2016: Newcastle United sign defender Jesús Gámez from La Liga outfit Atlético Madrid.[19] The club also confirmed the signing of youngsters Yasin Ben El-Mhanni and Stuart Findlay.[20]

9 July 2016: The club confirmed the departure of striker Papiss Cissé to join Chinese Super League club Shandong Luneng Taishan.[21]

11 July 2016: Isaac Hayden joined the club from Arsenal on a five-year deal.[22]

3 August 2016: Ciaran Clark and Mohamed Diamé joins Newcastle United from Aston Villa and Hull City respectively.[23][24]
