Quick Question

Hi Ben! In class we talked about a place in Wikipedia where you could go for live chat help/feedback. Do you know where I can find this?

Also, I'm trying to find ways to integrate other sources/content already in existance. For instance, this video I found is GREAT but I'm guessing I can only list media as a source? http://www.afirstlook.com/edition_7/theory_resources/Social_Information_Processing_Theory

Hi, Ben! Thank you for your support re: references. I think that I took care of any problems that may have once existed in regards to the references. Then again, something I've learned is that I'm never done learning about Wikipedia and that there's no end to the edits one can make. I'd really appreciate another look; I've been trying to inspire a discussion re: the usability/comprehensiveness/readability/clarity of the changes that I've made (they've been pretty extensive). Thanks for your suggestions thus far, and let me know if you have any more on the Structuration Talk page! I've created a section specifically for discussion around my recent changes. Re-using a reference

Its pretty easy! If you're using the citation tool, there is a spot for "ref name." Once you've created a reference with the tool, you can just put

<ref name="REFNAME"></ref> 

to re-use it. Here's the official help page on the subject: WP:Referencing for beginners. Basically you should just be able to look at what its named in the first instance, and then use the markup above to recall it. MyNameWasTaken (talk) 04:54, 18 March 2012 (UTC)

The name is totally arbitrary. You might have like... <ref name="whatever">{{cite web|blah|blah|blah}}</ref>, then to repeat that reference you can just do <ref name="whatever"></ref> without all the information. MyNameWasTaken (talk) 16:27, 19 March 2012 (UTC)

Well, the thing that I don't understand is where is "ref name" part. In my example above there is no ref name in quotations; it starts with <ref>{{cite journal.... so I don't understand what to insert the second time around.

Oh, I see. Easy fix, you just need to take the opening <ref> (before the {{cite journal...}} and add name="NAME" so it looks like this: <ref name="JournalABC">{{cite journal..}}</ref>. Then you can recall it using <ref name="JournalABC"></ref>. If you look, I named your first example JimmyBob, and then re-use it here: MyNameWasTaken (talk) 18:25, 20 March 2012 (UTC)

Diagram Copyright Question

Hi Ben! Thanks for checking in. I'm slowly but surely getting my material together and haven't put everything up on the page yet. I definitely want to add more, but it's also a case of trying to find the right material because there's not a whole lot on my topic because it's relatively new (year 2000) and more of a concept than a widely-held, vetted theory. However, I feel pretty confident in getting more material up there and also trying to get more links to my page and from my page (so it's not an orphan). My question now is about adding a diagram. The original journal article in which the concept was first introduced has the one main diagram used to explain it. I haven't seen this as a widespread image on Google; I think it's fairly specific to this article. I'd like to be able to put the image in the Wiki article, but it is not on the Wiki Commons and I'm afraid it would be copyrighted? Hey there! So, the opinion I got on this was that the image is ineligible for copyright since it is composed solely of basic geometric shapes. However, the image is super low resolution and quality. You probably should re-create the diagram unfortunately, although it shouldn't be that difficult since its a fairly simple chart. If you're really uncomfortable doing that, maybe we could find someone else in the class who has a bit of design know-how who would be willing to jam this out, or even I could I suppose. Open Badges

Hi, MyNameWasTaken. I'm responding to your appeal on the OpenBadges mailing list to get more updated information about badges up. I think we could definitely start a separate article on Digital Badges or Open Badges and also include more information in the [Badge] article. What do you think the article should include? Also, what should we name it? Digital Badges or Open Badges or are these two different articles? Hey there! I knew there would be other Wikipedians out there! I think that Digital badges would be the best title, with a little expansion to Badge to justify a section about digital badges with a link to the new article. I'm inclined to start it in the user space until its reasonably sourced and over 1,500 characters so that we can submit it as a DYK and get some traffic from the front page. Maybe a good starting point would be a sandbox-type page to collect sources and start generating some article text? I went ahead and started a drafting page at User:MyNameWasTaken/Digital_badges. I think starting there with a goal of getting it to a solid B-Class and then going back to address red links would be a decent starting point. Your thoughts? Just to clarify, I simply mean to get it to the bare minimum for DYK (1,500 characters, 3 good sources) and then move it to the article space and focus our work there until its fairly complete, and then move on to other pages that could be expanded, likely using information directly from that page. It seems like many have not been successful soliciting feedback...MJ submitted her article for good article status which triggered feedback..it is a great example of how you have to understand the community to communicate with it...regardless students should have interesting things to talk about in describing why they were not interested in engaging the community..thanks for your help!
