The KLF

Hi, you asked me a question about KLF pictures and whether they're fair use images or free. The main picture Image:The_KLF.jpg seems to be fair use so you can't use it on your user page, sorry. Hi Lighthead. I also am not much into Kabbalah, except to the extent that I like to see all Jewish intellectual movements represented accurately on Wikipedia, and not painted with someone's agenda. However, I might be willing to chip in here and there. I have a few Scholem books and some others (and, more importantly, access to a university library), but I would always first go to the Jewish Encyclopedia or the Encyclopedia Judaica. One or the other will have an excellent article on most topics, and the JE articles can be copied directly. They are not great fans of kabbalah, true, but since most editors of kabbalah articles here are biased too much in the other direction (i.e., that Kabbalah is the greatest thing since unsliced bread), a little dose of Jewish Encyclopedia can help bring things back down to earth. Good idea. I think the main need is for certain parts to be split off into separate articles. One could deal with theories on the origin of Kabbalah, for example the Biblical background, the Assyrian parallel mentioned early in the article, Neoplatonism, Gnosticism, Ismaili Islam and so on. (The parallel with Greek Orthodoxy is very strained: it only shows a common background in Neoplatonism.) Hi - I see you have recently created a new stub type. As it states at Wikipedia:Stub, at the top of most stub categories, and in many other places on Wikipedia, it is recommended that new stub types are proposed prior to creation at Wikipedia:WikiProject Stub sorting/Proposals, in order to check whether the new stub type is already covered by existing stub types, whether it is named according to stub naming guidelines, whether it reaches the standard threshold for creation of a new stub type, and whether it crosses existing stub type hierarchies. Your new stub type is currently listed at WP:WSS/D - please feel free to make any comments there as to any rationale for this stub type. I understand now that I hadn't proposed it; but I couldn't understand something you mentioned about 8-stub; and a bio something. Could you break it down to me in layman's terms.

Sure - basically for a stub type to be useful for editors, it's important for there to be at least a certain number of articles that can use the stub template. Below that number, it tends to make more work for editors rather than less, since they have to look through lots of small categories rather than one or two containing a reasonable number of articles. Also, there are easier ways to keep track of stub articles if there there are only a few without having to use a template, such as a user or WikiProject list subpage, or a WikiProject specific template for article talk pages that could be used for grading all pages relating to the project, not just stubs. Normally, the threshold number for a new stub template and category is 60 articles, though where there's a WikiProject that's lowered to 30. When I said there were only 8 stubs, what I meant was that at the moment only eight articles have the kabbalah-stub template on them (as shown here), and we've got no guarantee at the moment that there would be very many more. As for the bio-stub thing, biographical stub articles tend to be categorised separately to ones about other items related to a subject, and at the moment half on the articles using kabbalah-stub are biographies (plus one "biography" of an angel, but that's another matter :). BTW, the best way to show that a stub template is worth having is to show that there are more articles that can use it - if the number of articles using it were to increase to 30 or so, then it's very likely that the Stub-sorting project would agree to it being a useful stub type! Actually, no. What would probably work best would be to just tag all the articles in the project, and make a list of those that are already marked as stubs, either on other assessments or by the presence of stub templates. Then show that list to the people at Stub Sorting and the single stub template would be approved for transclusion into all the appropriate articles. It will also generally place those articles in a specific stub category, which is potentially useful. John Carter 22:26, 9 April 2007 (UTC)

Give that list and number to the people at stub sorting and the stub will almost certainly be approved. Give them a couple of days to do so, though. They require some votes before approving anything, being driven by consensus meaning they have to have consensus before they can act. John Carter 23:19, 9 April 2007 (UTC)

Kabbalah project

Don't try to create a stub until after you've gotten approval from Wikipedia:WikiProject Stub sorting. They'll generally want at least 30 extant stubs before they'll approve the creation of a new stub template. It might be possible that we could adjust the project banner to include assessment criteria, which might make that a bit easier. Let me know if you want them included in the banner. Also, the project is now listed on the Community Portal as a new project, so there might be a few others joining in the near future as well. John Carter 13:39, 9 April 2007 (UTC)

I'd take his word that they accept your word about the number of stubs. Regarding the italics, I'm less sure what you're specifically asking. If you mean the italics in the link to the portal from the banner, I think that they're mostly "built-in" by the template parameters. If you mean in the main body of the template, "this article is supported by WikiProject Kabbalah", just remove the two sets of two ' marks on either side of the italicized text. Banners

I started putting the banner on various articles that fit in the categories of the project. The list that has gone so far can be found here. Not sure what you mean about the template looking "professional". If you mean the bluish color, I chose that to make the banner "stand out" a bit more, but it can be changed, probably to any color you want. If you mean that you want the various assessment criteria added to it, like on Template:WPBiography, I can do that too, although it'll probably take a bit longer. Userboxes and bio-stubs

Hi again - there's a big list of userboxes which can be accessed from Wikipedia:Userboxes. The one you're looking for is probably on the subpage Wikipedia:Userboxes/Wikipedia, which covers editing philosophies and the like.

As to the Kabbalah-bio-stub, yes, that would have to be proposed separately. With only 21, there's really too few stubs for one at the moment - it would be better to "double-stub" them by adding both {{Kabbalah-stub}} and some form of bio-stub (probably a nationality one - I don't think there is a specific bio-stub for esoteric practitioners or the like). You asked if the image is "fair use". Basically, if you find an image on Wikimedia Commons, it is not a fair use image, because Commons only permits "free" images, not "fair use" ones. Being a free image (cc-by-sa licensed), you may use the image pretty much however you like, so long as you don't change how the resulting image is licensed. That's a lot of gobbledygook that means -- your use of the image is fine. Obviously non-free images do end up on Commons (until they are caught), but this one appears to have been uploaded by the author and he states it's freely licensed. I wouldn't lose any sleep over using the image as you have. Just to be clear, "fair use" means it's copyrighted and you are using the image without permission. Under United States law, you are allowed to do so with limitations. One exception is using it to illustrate or describe something (like Wikipedia grudgingly allows when a free image is not available of a celebrity). In those cases, the image must accompany the article that discusses it, but using the same image in a template or on a personal page just because you like it, would be a copyright violation. Fair use images are permissible (on the English Wikipedia, not many other places), but should be avoided unless absolutely unavoidable. Freely licensed images are the way to go anytime you can -- even if you have to create it yourself from scratch (derivatives based off of copyrighted works are not permissible, though). Kabbalah-stub (II)

Hi Lighthead - the debate was closed as "keep upmerged template", so for now it should feed into a larger category rather than Category:Kabbalah stubs. Once it gets to over 30 stubs, though - the threshold for the main stub of a wikiproject - it ill have enough for its own category. Do you think that it can be used on 30 stubs straight away? If so, I don't see much problem with giving it its own category now, rather than trying to work out whetrher "Mysticism stubs", "Judaism stubs", "Magic stubs", or "Religion stubs" would be the best place for it - none of which seem quite accurate. You may be right, I may be wrong but how is the deletion of the phonetic pronunciation not relevant (according to the MOS); I could see how it's already there later in the actual body, but I was just thinking for people who just glance at the intro. because I didn't see that until later. I don't know I guess you're right (being as how no other biographies have phonetic pronunciations). þ
