ScreenBeam is a wireless display receiver designed and marketed by Actiontec Electronics, Inc. With headquarters in Sunnyvale, California, Actiontec was founded in 1993 by Dean Chang and Minsiu Huang as a provider of broadband networking products and solutions.

History

Actiontec | ScreenBeam released their first generation receivers, ScreenBeam Pro and ScreenBeam Kit, in 2013. ScreenBeam Pro[1] was the first to market Wi-Fi Miracast™ and Intel Wi-Di receiver in 2013. Its target market was for retail consumers with either Wi-Fi Miracast standard mobile devices or Intel WiDi-enabled laptops. ScreenBeam Kit[2] is a combination of the ScreenBeam Pro receiver plus the ScreenBeam USB Transmitter. The ScreenBeam USB Transmitter is embedded with software to support legacy Windows 7 laptops or PC’s. The software works for both Intel and AMD platforms.

In 2014, Actiontec | ScreenBeam expanded their offering and created the ScreenBeam Business Edition using Intel Pro Wi-Di technology and in the same year released ScreenBeam SMB, ScreenBeam Mini2 and ScreenBeam Education Edition. In 2015, Actiontec | ScreenBeam developed the ScreenBeam Enterprise 950, ScreenBeam Mini2 Continuum, and ScreenBeam 950P which was specifically designed for use with Intel vPro devices. The ScreenBeam Mini2 Continuum Edition, enables users to wirelessly dock Windows 10 mobile phones and tablets to a monitor, keyboard and mouse.

ScreenBeam uses Miracast technology to create a point-to-point connection between a source device and display allowing users to project any content from their laptop, tablet or smartphone onto the big screen. Accredited by the Wi-Fi Alliance, Miracast became the gold standard for wireless display in 2016 and as such, Intel discontinued the marketing and development of Intel Wi-Di and Intel Pro Wi-Di. [3]

Actiontec | ScreenBeam released Miracast-enabled ScreenBeam 960[4] and ScreenBeam 750 and discontinued ScreenBeam Business Edition and ScreenBeam Education Edition. Both ScreenBeam 960 and ScreenBeam 750 have a Central Management System (CMS) (see Software). ScreenBeam 960 supports interactive touch technology for wireless inking on Windows 10 devices. ScreenBeam 960 is also enabled with User Input Back Channel (UIBC) which allows users at the whiteboard to manipulate and control the source device.

Also in 2016, Actiontec | ScreenBeam released the ScreenBeam Touch 90 Kit,[5] the world's first wireless interactive digital whiteboard.[6] Supported by the Windows 10 operating system, the ScreenBeam Touch 90 Kit is a wireless display receiver coupled with a digital whiteboard that is also enabled with User Input Back Channel (UIBC).

Devices that do not support Miracast technology can still access wireless display with ScreenBeam USB Transmitter 2 adapter.[7] Released in 2017, ScreenBeam USB Transmitter 2 connects wirelessly to any ScreenBeam receiver when plugged into legacy Windows 7/8 devices.

Software

The ScreenBeam CMS is a SaaS-based software management platform that allows users to remotely configure, deploy and manage every unit in an implementation from one central location. Users can group and customize receivers, apply policies and push device firmware updates to all ScreenBeam receivers within the network. The CMS was originally offered as an add-on in the first and second generation receivers but with the 2016 release of ScreenBeam 750 and ScreenBeam 960, Actiontec | ScreenBeam decided to build the software into the units.

ScreenBeam products can be used in businesses,[13] education[14] and healthcare industries. ScreenBeam solutions are used as the validation platform for wireless display functionality by companies like Microsoft, Intel, and leading PC OEM and device companies.

Partnerships

Intel

In 2013, Intel partnered with Actiontec | ScreenBeam to be the lead OEM to design the next generation receiver device for Intel Wi-Di technology for the 4th generation Intel Core processors. Tom Garrison, VP and General Manager Business Client Platforms Division identifies Actiontec | ScreenBeam as a ‘key collaborator” in their joint work with wireless display and the ScreenBeam line was deemed as the device of choice for Intel field sales teams.[15]

Microsoft

Actiontec | ScreenBeam is Microsoft’s lead co-engineering partner for wireless display technologies in Windows. Actiontec | ScreenBeam worked with Microsoft to develop wireless display capabilities in Windows 8.1[16] and 10 with Continuum and continues to co-engineer and develop next generation features. ScreenBeam is embedded with Windows engineering, mobile, IT, corporate education, US education, US Enterprise Group and Surface organizations. ScreenBeam is a "Designed for Surface" approved accessory.
