Article Evaluation

Article: Nurse practitioner

  • Evaluating content
    • Everything in the article was relevant to the article topic; there was nothing notable that I found distracting
    • All the information is relatively up to date; the most recent statistcs seems to be from 2016.
    • Providing more recent statistics could improve the content and usefulness of the article
  • Evaluating tone
    • The tone of the article seems informative and neutral; the claim that seems somewhat biased toward a particular position is the claim concerning NP training. NP training only covers basic disease prevention and health promotion and lacks the depth required to recognize more complex cases which involve multiple symptoms associated with more complicated or serious cases seems to devalue the training that NPs. NPs do receive extensive training and a high education and usually hold a masters or doctorate degree. NPs work alongside doctors and, in some states, NPs can have their own practices without the supervision of a physician.
    • There don't seem to be viewpoints that are overrepresented or underrepresented
  • Evaluating sources
    • When checking the citations, the links worked and the sources supported the claims in the article.
    • Each fact is referenced with an appropriate, reliable reference and the information is from neutral sources.
  • Checking the talk page
    • There was a conversations about the article seeming "Americacentric" and lacking a worldwide view; however, this is due to the lack of information about NPs around the world in 2006, when the article was first published. The article now seems to include information about NPs in other countries and the article has more of a worldwide view of NPs.
    • There were a conversation about clarifying if NPs can prescribe in all 44 vs 50 states due to source discrepancy. It was clarified that NPs can prescribe in all 50 states.
    • There was a conversation about plagiarism in which some of the text seems to be verbatim from a particular website which was not cited.
    • There were conversations regarding increasing the information about what level healthcare provider they are, the scope of practice for NPs and how it differs from a physician's.
    • There was a conversation about the recommendation for a good page containing informative information regarding NPs which could help prospective students better understand the profession.
    • There was a conversation about the flow of information in a particular section skipping around which caused confusion; a suggestion for a better flow was made. There were suggestions about minor edits, spell check as well as rephrasing.
    • There were conversations about quality of content issues. The page seemed to provide more of an overview, summation, or reflection instead of specifics pertaining to the perfusion.
    • There was also a conversation regarding removing an image because did did not effectively illustrate the concept of a NP.
    • There was a conversation critiquing a section of the article in that it goes "too far for what credible sources offer" and lacked citation . The section may have seemed too subjective and speculative; however, the article has been updated and more credible sources have been cited and the tone is more informative.
    • This article is rated B-class; low-, mid-, and high-importance; it is of interest to the following WikiProjects: WikiProject Nursing, WikiProject Medicine, and WikiProject Occupations.
    • In class, we touched on women in STEM and also looked at women in color in STEM. Wikipedia does not discuses women or women of color in regards to NPs.

• This proposed modified article meets scope-of-work requirements in that I could expand the article 5-fold because it is currently rated stub-class and only contains 3 brief sections which are: Education, Research and Awards & Honors. Her education section is only comprised of a brief paragraph of the education she received. The education section also included some information about Steel setting up a research program at the MRC Institute of Hearing Research in Nottingham which doesn’t seem to fit in this section. The research section does not reflect her extensive involvement in research and is comprised of only 3 sentences. Is very vague and only gives a brief overview of the type of research she has done and continues to do. There were no conversations on the “Talk” page. The article is of interest to 2 WikiProjects but is rated stub-class. There have been only 35 revisions since October 2013, with the last revision being on November 9, 2016.

I determined "scope of work" by the 5-fold expansion and documenting areas of work and progressing using Wikipedia tool provided by Dr. Lehr. My article is still in stub-class. When I am done with your work this quarter I plan on expanding the Lead Section as well as the Article sections since they do not contain much information. I may add new sections as I see appropriate. I plan on adding references for every statement that I add and find references to support the sentences already on the page that do not have supporting references.
