Early life and education

edit

Jin was born Kim Seok-jin on December 4, 1992 in Gwacheon, Gyeonggi Province, South Korea.[4] His family consists of his mother, father, and older brother.[5]

He attended Konkuk University and graduated with a degree in art and acting on February 22, 2017.[6][7] Unfortunately, he was unable to attend his own ceremony due to the 6th Gaon Chart Music Awards that were occurring around the same time.[8] He is enrolled in the graduate school Hanyang Cyber University, pursuing studies in areas other than music.[9]

Career

edit

2013–present: BTS

edit

Discovered for his looks as he was walking down the street[10], Jin was invited to audition for Big Hit Entertainment while he was studying acting.[11][2] On June 13, 2013, Jin made his debut as one of the four vocalists of BTS on Mnet's M Countdown with the track "No More Dream" from their debut single album, 2 Cool 4 Skool.[12] Although he had done songwriting before, he first co-produced a solo single from the album Wings titled "Awake",[13] which charted at 31 on the Gaon Music Chart[14] and 6 on the Billboard World Digital Singles Chart.[15] In December 2016, he released a Christmastime version of "Awake" on SoundCloud.[16]

On August 9, 2018, a trailer with the new song titled "Epiphany" was released. It was described as a "building pop-rock melody", and was a solo performance by Jin, with the lyrics speaking about self-love. The full version of the song was released for the first time on the album Love Yourself: Answer[17]. It charted at 30 on the Gaon Music Chart[18] and 4 on the Billboard World Digital Singles Chart.[19]

2015–present: Solo activities

edit

Jin collaborated with fellow BTS member V for the historical drama Hwarang's soundtrack entitled "It's Definitely You".[20][21] He also joined with BTS member Jungkook to sing and release an alternate version of "So Far Away", a song from BTS Suga's self-titled mixtape Agust D.[16] Jin's solo covers include "Mom" by Ra.D,[22] "I Love You" by Mate,[23], and "In Front Of The Post Office In Autumn", which is originally sang by Yoon Do-hyun in 1994.[24] They were released on Soundcloud May 7th, 2015[25], December 3, 2015[23], and June 7th, 2018[16] respectively. He has also made several appearances as a co-host for Korean music award shows, such as Music Bank.[26]
