User:Estopedist1/Taxons and disambiguation

Constructive edits are welcome! Don't be shy!

(I've made a first pass of dab terms I strongly approve of. Thinking on some others. I used a pretty obscure template from {{Template:Checking}} to indicate my approval; other editors wishing to indicate approval might want to select a different template so that our "votes" can be differentiated. General rules

edit
  • All disambiguator qualifiers must be in singular, not in plural form. Eg correct is (bacterium), not (bacteria).
  • Important is to find suitable rank of disambiguator qualifier (eg if you have a wasp genus, then eg naming "Venturia (arthropod)" or "Venturia (insect)" is not acceptable; correct is "Venturia (wasp)").
  • When dealing with supergeneric ranks, then disambiguator qualifiers should remain the same. Eg instead of Macroglossinae (Lepidoptera), we should use the name Macroglossinae (butterfly).
  • When dealing with the names of categories a la "Taxon_name (genus)" there are big mess. Logical should be that the article name and respective category name should coincide.

Animals

edit

Wikipedia:WikiProject Animals

  • (animal) [only allowed in exceptional cases. Exceptions include cases where we are dealing with marginal animal groups which haven't a widely known common name, eg ??]
  • (sponge)  Y
  • (bryozoan)  Y
  • (brachiopod)  Y
  • (worm) [adequacy? ambigious?] NB! However, (worm) can be an umbrella disambiguator qualifier for primitive, worm-like animals. Hence – using (worm) may be good, because it helps to avoid disambiguator qualifier (animal)
  • (nematode) = 10+
  • (annelid) = 10+
    • (polychaete) = 10+
  • (flatworm) = 10+ = Platyhelminthes
    • (tapeworm) = 6
    • (trematode) = 6 = Trematoda
    • (planarian) = 5 (OK or to be substituted by (flatworm)?)
  • (rotifer) = 3
  • (echinoderm)  Y
Comment 1: to easify linking, probably only to use only one disambiguator qualifier: (echinoderm). Such easifying is also supported because several two words disambiguator qualifiers which itself can be the source of mistakes (hypens, two words (eg sea star to seastar)) --Estopedist1 (talk) 09:11, 27 March 2021 (UTC). Comment 1 is corrected on June 2021 by Estopedist1
    • (sea urchin) = 2 = class Echinoidea
    • (sea star) = 4 = class Asteroidea
    • (sea cucumber) = 2
    • (starfish) = 4
  • (cnidarian) = 8 = Anthozoa (coral + sea anemone) + Medusozoa (hydrozoan + jellyfish)
    • (coral) = 20
    • (jellyfish) = 9 = Medusozoa
    • (hydrozoan) = 3
    • (sea anemone) = 3 = Actiniaria. But: (anemone) = 2 ["anemone" is ambigious, referring to the plants]
Comment 1: (sea anemone) as a two-words disambiguator qualifier not to be allowed? --Estopedist1 (talk) 18:24, 7 July 2021 (UTC)

  • † (conodont) = 2 = class Conodonta [fossil]
  • † (placoderm) = 2 [fossil]
  • † (graptolite) = 1 [fossil, possible may be (worm)]

Arthropods

edit

Wikipedia:WikiProject Arthropods

arthropods = (arthropod) = 24 [also links to arthropod anatomy; to be avoided, except for marginal arthropod groups]
  • (myriapod) = 1
    • (millipede) = 19
    • (centipede) = 2
  • (proturan) = 2
  • (springtail) = 7 = Collembola
  • † (trilobite) = 45 = [fossil]
  • (arachnid)
    • (spider) = 100+ = order Araneae Wikipedia:WikiProject Spiders  Y
    • (scorpion) = 4 [to be substituted by (spider)?]
    • (pseudoscorpion) = 3 [order Pseudoscorpiones]
    • (mite) = 20 = Acari
    • (harvestman) = 18 = Opiliones
  • (crustacean)  Y
Comment 1: maybe too many subgroups. Maybe rational is not to allow eg disambiguator qualifiers (barnacle), (isopod)?--Estopedist1 (talk) 12:54, 28 March 2021 (UTC)
Comment 2: many other animals with similar names – such as hermit crabs, king crabs, porcelain crabs, horseshoe crabs, stone crabs, and crab lice – are not true crabs #enwiki, 2021
    • (crab) = 33 = Brachyura
    • (shrimp) = 9, vs (prawn) = 2 [we should use only one? Expert attenton needed]
    • (amphipod) = 8
    • (copepod) = 8
    • (ostracod) = 4

Insects

Neuroptera (common name(s)?; expert attention needed!)
  • (lacewing) = 2 #enwiki 'lacewing' redirects to Neuroptera
  • (antlion) = 1 = Myrmeleontidae
Comment 1: (antlion) may be considered as a misleading term, think: ant + lion ?! Same problem with (waterbear) for tardigrades

Psocodea (Phthiraptera + Psocoptera) (psocid) = 1 [adequacy?]
  • (louse) = 0 = Phthiraptera (NB! lice = 2 (plural and hence – invalid, all redirects)

  • (skipper) = 100+ (many redirected to "(butterfly)") [ambigious? to be avoided?]
Orthoptera
  • (cricket) = [subordo Ensifera]
Comment 1: same disambiguator qualifier is used for sports. But we probably cannot avoid/substitute it. Because (insect) is worse solution --Estopedist1 (talk) 06:07, 5 April 2021 (UTC)
    • (bush cricket) = 3 vs (katydid) = 2 [we have to choose one, or to use higher rank disambiguator qualifier]

Plants

edit

Wikipedia:WikiProject Plants In general, term "(plant)" is sufficient. But we also have  Y

  • (palm) = 16 (As of 2021, Calamus (palm) is the only non-redirect. Reason: Calamus (plant) is DAB, but Calamus (genus)?)
  • (orchid) = 76 (all redirects?)
  • (grass) = 17 (redirects to taxons, common names, expert attention needed)
  • (legume) = 17 (redirects to taxons, common names, expert attention needed)
  • (fern) = 14 (all redirects, except the misleading (?) Sporocarp (ferns) = Sporocarp (fern) --> Sporocarp (fern morphology)?)
  • (moss) = 17 (as of March 2021: all redirects, except problematic Mahua (moss) vs Mahua (plant))
  • (plant genus) = 51 [all redirects, should be deleted to clean up Wikipedia database and not to encourage adding more such invalid disambiguator qualifiers]

Fungi

edit

Wikipedia:WikiProject Fungi

  • (fungus) = 100+ vs (fungi) = 39 [invalid, mostly redirects, mixed stuff?]  Y
  • (lichen) = 30
  • (microsporidian) = 2

Others

edit
  • (bacterium)  Y
  • (protist) = 7 vs (protozoa) = 8 [plural, should be (?) (protist), also (protozoan)]
    • (ciliate) = 7
  • (slime mold) = 6 [problematic: fungus or protist?]
  • (foraminifera) = 6
  • (alga) = 100+ Wikipedia:WikiProject Algae  Y
    • (diatom) = 13 [to be standardized to (alga)?]
    • (dinoflagellate) = 3? [to be standardized to (alga)?]
    • (cryptomonad) = [to be standardized to (alga)?]
    • (cyanobacteria) = 5 = [plural, hence not accepted?, substituting by (cyanobacterium) or (alga)?]

Unclassified? Exceptions? Out of scope? Ideas

edit
  • (genus) = 100+, only allowed in exceptional cases. Exceptions include cases where a genus name and common name are the same (hence "Mantis (genus)" rather than "Mantis (mantis)", or "Boa (genus)" rather than "Boa (snake)" as Boa refers to various groups of snakes).
Comment 1: however, it is possible to avoid disambiguator qualifier "(genus)" if you use eg "Mantis (insect)" or "Boa (reptile)"--Estopedist1 (talk) 08:04, 27 March 2021 (UTC)
Comment 1: big mess with subgenus templates and articles --Estopedist1 (talk) 20:41, 28 March 2021 (UTC)
Comment 2: is harmonization between Animalia and Plantae possible/rational --Estopedist1 (talk) 20:41, 28 March 2021 (UTC)
  • † (fossil) = 17
Idea 1: not to allow disambiguator qualifiers which are composed of two words (eg (comb jelly) wouldn't be accepted disambiguator qualifier)--Estopedist1 (talk) 21:30, 28 March 2021 (UTC)
Idea 2: to easify and harmonize linking system, to remove WP:MONOTYPICFLORA and WP:MONOTYPICFAUNA. Hence – we can universally focus on the genus rank--Estopedist1 (talk) 20:56, 30 March 2021 (UTC)
