Rezistans ek Alternativ is a left-wing party in the Republic of Mauritius. "Rezistans ek Alternativ" means "Resistance and Alternative" in Mauritian Creole and was founded in 2005 by left-wing militants who had resigned from Lalit in 2004 and describes itself as involved in Alter-globalization, anti-capitalist and anti-communalist and promoting an "alternative political economy" against neoliberalism.[1]

History

edit

In 2005, the candidatures of every Rezistans ek Alternativ for the 2005 general election was rejected after they refused to mention their ethnic identity when applying as electoral candidates in protest of the Best Loser System, which Rezistans ek Alternativ regards as institutionalising communalism. Rezistans ek Alternativ took the Electoral Commission, the Electoral Supervisory Commission and electoral staff of their constituencies to court. The Supreme Court ruled in favour of Rezistans ek Alternativ, allowing candidates for the general elections to no longer be required to mention their ethnic community on their nomination papers, and permitting the candidates of Rezistans ek Alternativ to stand as candidates for the 2005 general elections.[2][3]

After the Electoral Supervisory Commission contested the Supreme Court ruling after the general election, the Supreme Court ruled on November 10, 2005, that general election candidates were legally obligated to declare their ethnic identity. Rezistans ek Alternativ contested this ruling, but its appeal was rejected by the Supreme Court On September 6, 2006. After Rezistans ek Alternativ's November 25, 2005 application to the Supreme Court to have recourse to the Privy Council was rejected in 2007, the party took the matter to the United Nations Human Rights Committee, which in 2009 ruled in favour of Rezistans ek Alternativ.[4]
