Vinesh Phogati born on 25 August 1994 ,an Indian freestyle wrestler from Bhiwani district of Haryana, is considered one of the best wrestlers in the world. She became the first Indian woman wrestler to win Gold in both Commonwealth and Asian games.Phogat had to pull out from the 2016 Rio Olympics during her quater final bout because of a knee injury. The Haryana girl has won two gold medals at the commonwealth Games in 2014 and 2018 editions . She became the first Indian woman wrestler to win Gold in both Commonwealth and Asian games.


She is employed with the indian Railways. She became the first indian to be nnominated for the prestigious Laureus world sports Awards in 2019. The Government of India has conferred the Arjuna award upon her for outstanding performance in sport.

Personal life and family Background

Phogat was born in a family of wrestlers in Balali[1] ,village of Haryana's Bhiwani district. She trained under her uncle Ma[2]havir Singh Phogat ,recipient of prestigious Dronacharya award for coaches and father of Indian women wrestlers G[3]eeta Phogat and Babita kumari Phogat. Vinesh phogat's father Rajpal was murdered when she was very young. She was raised in a very conservative milieu and uncle Mahavir and her mother Premlata had to battle opportunity from the society regarding girls taking up wrestling and wearing shorts. . Soon ,she announced her arrival at the big stages by winning a gold medal at the commonwealth Games in 2014 . The Haryana wrestler got married to follow wrestler somvir Rathee of Bakhta Khera village of Jind district,who is a two times gold medalist in the national championship. The couple knew each other since 2011 and both work for the Indian Railways where they met and fell in love.

Career

in the 2013 Asian wrestling championship in New Delhi ,Phogat won the bronze medal in the 52kg category and followed that up with a silver medal at the commonwealth wrestling championships in Johannesburg, south Africa in the 51 kg category.

She won her first international gold at the 2014 commonwealth Games in Glasgow in the 48kg weight category. Later that year. She won the bronze medal at the Asian Games in Incheon ,south korea in the same category. In the 2015 Asian championship. Phogat bettered her performance than the previous edition by winning the silver medal.

The wrestler had raised expectations with her performance at the commonwealth Games and was one of the favourites to finish at the podium in the 2016 Rio Olympics, but in the quarterfinals bout,she got injured and had to be taken out on the strecher.it took surgical intervention and five months before she could return to the mat. In 2017,she won the silver medal at the Asian Wrestling championship in New Delhi in 55 kg and repeated the performance in 2018 edition in Bishkek in the 50 kg category. In 2018 Phogat won the gold in the 50 kg category at the commonwealth Games of Gold coast and became the first Indian woman wrestler to win a gold at Asian Games in jakarta.

The grappler cocontinue her good from in 2019 with the bronze medal in the Asian wrestling championship in the 53kg category. However, her broze medal victory at the world wrestling championships medialist and also because she booked her place for the 2021 Tokyo Olympics. In 2020 Phogat won a gold medal at a ranking event in Rome .

Awards

The Government of India in 2016 conferred upon her her Arjun Award bestowed upon sportspersons. She is also Padma Shri, nominee in 2018 by the Sports Authority of India.[28] [Phogat, Bhiwani|⁹]] questioned the selection system for government awards when her name didn't feature in the list of civilian awards announced in January 2020.
