Summary

edit
Easton is a 1,300 acre mixed-use development in northeast Columbus, Ohio. The initial planned site encompasses 12 million square feet of various development. With the Easton Town Center being the focal point of development, it masses 1.7 million square feet of outdoor/indoor retail space. Easton was developed by a partnership between local businessman, Les Wexner, The Georgetown Company, and Steiner+Associates. Upon its creation, Edgar Lambert, President of The Georgetown Company, “had envisioned Easton not to create a separate community, but an anchor for greater development.”[1] With the regional and nationwide reception, The Easton Town Center has helped create multiple districts within the planned development. the most recent addition being the Easton Gateway. Construction on the Gateway started in 2013 , and is now completed in late 2015 with all of its tenants filled.[2] The design split the mall between indoor and outdoor shopping facilities, making Easton walkable and pedestrian friendly. This has helped attract over twenty million visitors since its opening in 1999.[3]

History

edit
Easton was originally intended to be an expansion of Limited Brands. However, shifting demographics in central Ohio in the 1980s and 1990s made the potential greater. Already having the completely enclosed Columbus City Center, a new mall was needed in Columbus. Instead of following the typical path of large, indoor malls the retail development (co-developed by The Georgetown Company and Steiner + Associates) was instead turned to an outdoor lifestyle center. The Easton Town Center became one of the first in the country, and soon a trend that became much more prevalent in the 2000s. The Easton Town Center was one of the first outdoor shopping centers to incorporate indoor parking, town squares, various fountains, public spaces, and variety of local and renown tenants.
A real estate project of Les Wexner, the founder, chairman and CEO of nearby Limited Brands, Easton comprises 1,800,000 square feet (170,000 m2) of retail space built upon approximately 90 acres (360,000 m2) within a larger 1,300-acre (5 km2) development. The 90-acre (360,000 m2) retail development was co-developed by The Georgetown Company and Steiner + Associates, with M+A Architects serving as the Architect of Record, while the overall 1,300-acre (5 km2)
Phase I (the South District) opened in the summer of 1999. Included the Easton Station and the Easton Town Center. It now includes tenants such as AMC, Forever XXI, Crate & Barrel, and The Cheesecake Factory. It was also the site of the first ever Hollister Co. store which opened in 2000.
Phase II (the "Fashion District") opened in the fall of 2001. It includes tenants such as McCormick & Schmick's Seafood Restaurant, and Apple Store. This 750,000 sq. ft. addition added the Anchor stores Macy's and Nordstrom. With the completion of The North District also came the central park fountain. ( insert tiffany's image )

Easton’s street front shops help to create a quiet, urban, downtown main street in which it was intended to be. The combination of the station and the town center help to create the small downtown society the developers had envisioned. The extension to the town center , the "Fashion District", lies in North District, while The Easton Market sits on the west side of the town center. The Easton Commons is a 500 unit residential complex that is located on the south end of the development just west of the Easton Oval, the Business District. The newest addition The Easton Gateway is settled in the northeast region, adding 54 acres of small and mid sized retailers.[4] With Easton being a popular attraction much more future development is expected in the future.

Geography

Easton is located in northeastern Columbus, Ohio, fixated between two neighborhoods Gahanna to the southeast, and Westerville just north. With Easton situated in proximity of Port Columbus, Interstate 670 provides quick access to Downtown Columbus. Easton is bordered by Morse Rd. to the north, the intersection at Stelzer Road and McCutcheon Road to the south, Interstate 270 to the East, and Sunbury Rd. to the west. These boundaries can be determined by the same architectural and brick styles seen within the development. The development at Easton can be defined by It’s blue street signs and corresponding lamp posts. Although this is the original planned site, development has expanded beyond its perimeter, as intended.

Design Layout

Easton is composed of various districts that make up the entire complex. The Easton Station and Easton Town Center are located at the center of the planned development. The Easton Station was created with the intention of replicating a old Midwestern train station.( citation- http://steiner.com/portals/0/pdf/steinerreprints/scb%20easton-may09.pdf) Easton’s street front shops help to create a quiet, urban, downtown main street in which it was intended to be. The Easton Way

edit

Going, Going, Green!

edit

Easton promotes environmental awareness and and new technologies in effort to reduce our environmental footprint. Even though Easton provides a eco-friendly walkable community, they still push the limit on the improvement we can make on our society. Some of the green practices Easton follows are battery recycling, glass, plastic, and paper recycling, fully electronic security smart cars, as well as providing electric charging stations for hybrid vehicles.[13]

Energy Conservation

edit

Easton exceeds these green expectations by focusing on energy conservation as well. From installing led lights to energy conserving escalators and hand dryers, Easton provides an "annual savings of over 2,211,663 kWh of electricity. That’s enough to power 193 Ohio homes! And we’ll reduce carbon emissions by over 1,589 metric tons."[14]

Car2Go and Zagster

edit

With Car2Go and Zagster traveling to and around Easton has never been easier. Downtown Columbus has integrated these convenient means of transportation available to those without an bike or a car. These companies provided rentable vehicles that can be picked up and dropped off at any location. With these businesses both in Easton and Columbus, Ohio navigating between cities has never been more efficient.[15]
