Hellraiser, previously known as Hellraiser: The Series,[1] is an upcoming American horror television series developed by director David Gordon Green and writers Mark Verheiden and Michael Dougherty for HBO. It is based on the Hellraiser film franchise, which was first adapted from the novella The Hellbound Heart by Clive Barker in 1987. Rather than rebooting the franchise, the series continues the mythology established in the films and novels.

The television rights to the Hellraiser franchise were acquired by Lawrence Kuppin, David Salzman, and Eric Gardner in 1989 through New World Pictures.[2] Clive Barker, who created the property in 1986 and directed the original film, told Sci Fi Entertainment in February 1995 that there had been talks of a Hellraiser series, but added "somehow I just can't imagine it as a prime time show... scaring people with television material is practically impossible. That's the last resort for any monster who, quite frankly, should be ashamed to be seen on television."[3] A Hellraiser series was first announced in 2004 from Panacea Entertainment, Park Avenue Entertainment and Blueprint Entertainment, with Kuppin and Gardner serving as executive producers. The plot would have followed a tabloid journalist who uncovers a conspiracy between the character Pinhead and a zillionaire that could doom mankind.[4] A spokesperson for Blueprint Entertainment told The New York Post that it was in the early stages of development, and that they were looking for a showrunner to flesh out the show's concept. He stated that, because of the franchise's complex mythology, it would take effort to translate into a television format.[5]
Development of a Hellraiser series was again announced at the MIPTV Media Market in 2012, this time from Sonar Entertainment, who was looking to expand the scope of their production and distribution business. Kuppin and Gardner were attached as executive producers,[6][7] and a promotional synopsis was published on Sonar's website, touting the franchise's television debut with the tagline "Television is going to Hell".[1][8] In June 2019, it was reported by Deadline Hollywood that a separate rights deal had since taken place, and that Roy Lee and Dan Farah would produce and were searching for a writer and showrunner. Salzman joined Kuppin and Gardner as executive producers.[9][10] In April 2020, it was reported that Mark Verheiden and Michael Dougherty would write the series for HBO, with David Gordon Green directing the first several episodes. Danny McBride, Jody Hill, and Brandon James joined the executive producer team, with Andrew Farah and Adam Salzman acting as co-executive producers.[11][12] On October 30, 2020, Barker announced that he had joined the show as an executive producer, explaining his desire to take Hellraiser back to its roots: "I'm eager to bring to a new audience the most powerful and ancient elements of horror: the darkest evil invading our human lives and how we must find in ourselves the power to resist it."[13]

The show is not a reboot of the franchise, but is intended to serve as an "an elevated continuation and expansion" of the film lore.[11]
