User:Colbert/Military power

The military power ranking of a country is built on many factors, including the number of soldiers and the budget allocated for its defence but also many other parameters such as its technological advance, the type and number of materials it has (aircraft carrier, nuclear weapon, submarine...).

Description edit

Power is an ability, an ability to influence. Power is a central notion of international relations on which the choices of policy-makers will depend: it determines the possibilities of action of an actor at the global or regional level. Therefore, power is the mode of existence on the international scene: in this world by essence relational, no actor can exist if he does not have a capacity of negotiation that confers on him his power.

Global rankink of spatial military power edit

In 2020, United States, Russia, and France are the only military powers in the world to have operational satellite surveillance systems.

The United States operates 200 military satellites served by l'US AF Space Command.

Russia operates 40 military satellites served by Voenno Kosmicheskie Sily (VKS).

France has at its disposal a center of military surveillance of space objects (Commandement de l'Espace), unique in Europe, in Lyon-Mont Verdun Air Base[1],[2],[3] aiming to ensure freedom of decision and action in space, France’s first Defence Space Strategy includes plans for the potential weaponisation of satellites for self-defence. France’s ambitions for military space reinforce the goal of sustaining ‘strategic autonomy[4]. French Centre militaire d'observation par satellites (CMOS) opered 12 militarry satellites, Direction du Renseignement Militaire (DRM) with all weather capacity [5] [6] :

  • 3 CSO Optical (ISR)
  • 3 CERES Electro-magnetic (SIGINT)
  • 2 Syracuse 3 Military communications (critical)
  • 1 Sicral 2 Military communications (critical)
  • 1 Athéna-Fidus Military communications (non-critical)
  • 1 GRAVES V2 (high orbit, large objects)
  • SATAM V1 (low orbit, small objects) Spacesurveillance (ground-based radars)

Moreover France has access to German SAR-Lupeand Italian COSMO-SkyMed.

Regional rankink in defence expenditure edit

Regional military powers are the countries that exercise military domination in their region. Regional power occurs when a geographical area is dominated as a whole by one or more countries, which have an unmatched influence on all other nations in the region. Sometimes several countries share the leadership; however, when only one of them proves to be much more powerful than its neighbours, it is then referred to as a regional superpower . In these cases, the hegemony exercised by the country in question is so important that it far exceeds the other countries of the continent.

Africa edit

The main military powers in Africa are[7] :

Conventional powers

Note : In Africa as a whole, Egypt may be considered a regional superpower: indeed, Egypt is at the same time the largest, most powerful and militarized of the Arab countries[8], the first military power in Africa[9] (all regions combined) and the thirteenth largest army in the world . By taking each region one by one, the regional powers are divided as follows: South Africa in Southern Africa, Nigeria in West Africa and Algeria in North Africa,[10],[11].

Middle-east edit

The main military powers in Middle-east are :

Nuclear powers[12] :

Conventional powers[7]

Asia-Pacific edit

The main military powers in Asia-Pacific are[7] :

Nuclear powers[7] :

Conventional powers[7]

Note : Asia-Pacific is home to a number of world-class powers. Thus, the nine largest regional powers in the region are all ranked among the twenty largest world powers (Russiea, China, India, South Korea, Japan, Pakistan, Taïwan et Indonesia.) The third one (Russia, China et India) can be claasified as regional superpower.

America edit

The main military powers in America are[7] :

Nuclear powers[12] :

Nuclear powers[12] :

Note : The American continent is home to the world’s first power: the United States. Because of the place occupied by the United States on the international scene (world’s leading military power[13], , largest defence budget[14], , world’s second largest exporter of arms, etc.), it is unquestionably a regional superpower, whether north or south of the continent. In Latin America, Brazil, which has the 19th largest budget in the world, can also be considered the regional superpower[15].

Europe edit

The main military powers in Europe are :

Nuclear powers[7] :

Conventional powers[12] :

Note : Europe is probably the continent with one of the largest armed forces in the world. The three regional powers are generally considered to be the United Kingdom, France and Germany. However, it is difficult to name a superpower, given that these three countries have substantially equal military power. However, France leads the trio because of its nuclear power and its most powerful army in Europe.

Military industries edit

The military industry of a country is the capacity of that country to manufacture military equipment by its own means. It is the branch of the industrial sector devoted to the manufacture and sale of weapons and to the research, development and production of military equipment, equipment and installations. Most countries in the world have a military industry, but their development and production capacity vary considerably depending on the country concerned. Within a military industry, an entire sector is often devoted to defence: this sector can be composed of one or more companies - depending on the country -, whose aim is to produce military armament to equip the national army.

countries that benefit from a large military power are also, in most cases, those that have the most developed military industries. The following countries are among the world’s leading producers and exporters of military equipment : USA, Russia, France, China, United Kingdom...

The exports of military equipment, software and technology is a means to promote national security interests and foreign policy objectives.
