There are a number of Chinese music ensembles in the United States, performing Chinese music on traditional instruments. The earliest such ensembles (which included instrumental groups as well as Cantonese opera troupes) appeared on the West Coast following large-scale immigration from China in the second half of the 19th century. Since the 1960s Chinese ensembles comprising both Chinese and non-Chinese members have also been formed at universities throughout the country, and over the course of the last quarter of the 20th century expatriate musicians from China, Taiwan, Hong Kong, and Singapore have established amateur and professional ensembles in many major cities and at least 21 states.
