EastEnders is a British soap opera, examining the domestic and professional lives of working class people who live in the fictitious London Borough of Walford in the East End of London. The show airs on BBC One and entered its 35th broadcast year on 1 January 2020 with episode number 6053/6054. Jon Sen continued his role as executive producer, working alongside Kate Oates as senior executive producer. In the typical week, EastEnders airs four episodes of roughly 30 minutes in a time slot of 8:00 pm on Mondays and Fridays, and 7:30 pm on Tuesdays and Thursdays. However, filming was suspended in March 2020 because of the 2020 coronavirus pandemic and two episodes were shown a week on Mondays and Tuesdays until 16 June 2020, when the last episode produced before the national lockdown was shown. Filming later resumed and the show returned to screens on 7 September 2020, with four episodes of around 20–25 minutes being shown each week, in slightly varying time slots to the usual ones. A total of 138 episodes were broadcast, with the final episode of the year, number 6193, being shown on 31 December 2020.

The year included a number of special episodes, such as the first episode of the year, which contained a flashback to Christmas Day 2019. The show celebrated its 35th anniversary in February 2020 with a week of episodes set over one 24-hour period.New regular cast members introduced in 2020 included Balvinder Sopal (Suki Panesar) and Stevie Basaula (Isaac Baptiste). Guest stints for former cast members included Danny Hatchard as Lee Carter. Characters that returned in 2020 with new actors included Peter Beale, now played by Dayle Hudson. Departing regular cast included Danny Walters (Keanu Taylor), Tilly Keeper (Louise Mitchell), Lucy Benjamin (Lisa Fowler), Tom Wells (Leo King) and Jasmine Armfield (Bex Fowler).

On 1 November 2019, it was announced that Danny Walters would be leaving his role of Keanu Taylor[5] and the character made his final appearance in episode 6056 (3 January 2020).[6] Former cast member Danny Hatchard concluded his guest stint as Lee Carter in January 2020, also departing in episode 6056, having reprised the role during the previous month.[1] Emma Barton took a break from her role as Honey Mitchell, with the character departing in episode 6064 (17 January 2020); this was to facilitate Barton's appearance on the Strictly Come Dancing tour.[7] On 20 February 2020, it was reported that the character Dot Branning's (June Brown) appearance in episode 6066 (21 January 2020) was her last and that Brown had announced that she would "never go back" when she told the Distinct Nostalgia podcast, "I've left for good. I've sent her off to Ireland where she'll stay."[8] A BBC statement said that Brown could come back "if the story arises and if [she] wishes to take part".[8] It was also reported that there were no plans, to the production team's knowledge, for Brown to leave the role permanently.[9] The departure of character Louise Mitchell, played by Tilly Keeper, was confirmed on 3 December 2019, after appearing in the series since 2016.[2] Additionally, Louise's mother, Lisa Fowler, played by Lucy Benjamin, returned in 2019 and was reported to be back for a stint, meaning she would also depart in 2020.[3] Louise, Lisa and Louise's infant daughter, Peggy Taylor, all depart in episode 6068 (24 January 2020).[10] The character of Leo King, played by Tom Wells since 2019, was killed off in episode 6080 (14 February 2020).[11] On 28 January 2020, it was reported that Jasmine Armfield had filmed her final scenes as Bex Fowler and would depart during the following month, having appeared since 2014.[4]

The first episode of the year features the introduction of Isaac Baptiste (Stevie Basaula), the son of Sheree Trueman (Suzette Llewellyn). Basaula's casting had not been publicised prior to his debut.[12] The first new regular character to be officially announced for 2020 was Suki Panesar, played by Balvinder Sopal. Suki is the mother of Kheerat Panesar (Jaz Deol), Jags Panesar (Amar Adatia), Vinny Panesar (Shiv Jalota) and Ash Kaur (Gurlaine Kaur Garcha) and her introduction was announced on 22 December 2019.[13] The return of character Peter Beale was announced on 18 December 2019, with the part being recast to Dayle Hudson, the seventh actor to play the role, taking over from Ben Hardy.[14]

In the typical week, EastEnders airs four episodes of roughly 30 minutes in a time slot of 8:00 pm on Mondays and Fridays, and 7:30 pm on Tuesdays and Thursdays, though episodes are sometimes moved or extra episodes added for different reasons. Kate Oates continued her role as senior executive producer from 2018,[15] and Jon Sen continued his role as executive producer, also from 2018, producing the episodes.[16] On 18 March 2020, it was announced that filming for EastEnders would be suspended "In light of the spread of COVID-19" and that the number of episodes being broadcast would be reduced to two a week "so that we can ensure the audience can continue to enjoy EastEnders in their homes for as long as possible." The episodes would be shown on Mondays and Tuesdays in the usual time slot.[17] The BBC announced on 14 May 2020 that filming would resume in June with social distancing and actors doing their own hair and make-up. It was also reported that there could be a gap in broadcasting when when existing episodes run out.[18]

All official ratings cover a period of 28 days from the original broadcast, and are taken from the Broadcasters' Audience Research Board (BARB).[19] Airdates, credits, running times and episode summaries are taken from episodes, the official EastEnders website[20] and BBC programmes schedules.[21] Episode numbers are taken from Radio Times.[22]

January edit

On 25 December 2019, it was announced that a flashback episode exploring the events of episode 6047/6048, set on Christmas Day 2019, would air on 1 January 2020. Sen billed the episode as a "format-busting sixty minute episode taking us back to the beginning of Christmas Day to see the stories from different perspectives".[23] Oates believed there would need to be a good reason to deviate from the house style, which she thought there was in this event. She also praised the cast, writers and directors for their work in creating a "clever and exciting" episode.[23]

A flashback episode revealing what happened on Christmas Day 2019.[23] Martin takes Keanu to shoot him, unaware that Linda was sleeping in the back of the van he took; Linda finds out why Martin is going to kill Keanu and comes up with a plan to make it look like Keanu is dead; Linda accidentally shoots Keanu before Martin films Keanu begging for his life and then himself shooting Keanu and lying on the floor, seemingly shot in the head; Martin and Linda agree that Keanu cannot let his family know that he is alive and Martin tells Ben that Keanu is dead. After Dotty tries to find out who tried to steal money from her grandmother Dot's bank account, Dot's step-granddaughter offers to call the bank but everyone is unaware that she has unplugged the phone when she tells them it was Russian hackers; Sonia looks at Dot's bank account online and then deletes her internet history. Ian is upset when Sharon decides she will ask Linda to stay with her after being kicked out by her husband, Phil. Sheree leaves her husband Patrick after Denise orders her to and it is revealed that the man she was talking to is her son, Isaac; he says he was hoping to meet Patrick but Sheree says he is unwell. Daniel hears Jean's voicemail and arrives in Walford, seeing the three Panesar brothers, Kheerat, Vinny and Jags, at Jean's house; he finds out they are going to put up the Slaters' rent so offers to pay the difference; he asks Kheerat to send Jean into the house and he surprises her, as Jean believes he is dead from his cancer; he admits that he faked his death because he was falling in love with her and thought she was falling for him and wanted to save her to pain of seeing him die slowly; they kiss.

It is New Year's Day and Linda wakes up in the bar of The Queen Victoria pub (the Vic) of which she is landlady; her husband Mick says her behaviour is dangerous and he reminds her that she deeply insulted him on the phone the night before;[ψ] she promises to stop drinking alcohol. Karen tells Billy she wants to report her son, Keanu, missing and when he tries to convince her not to, she thinks he is covering up for his family, especially Phil; Karen confronts Phil in the Vic but he denies touching Keanu; she says she thinks he killed Keanu and Martin drags her away from Phil and takes her to his home, where she admits that she knew Keanu and Phil's wife, Sharon, were having an affair and always knew what Phil would do if he found out; Martin later visits Karen to confirm that she never told anybody about the affair and believing she can be trusted not to tell anybody, tells her that Keanu is alive; she cries in his arms. Having been ejected from the Vic by Linda in the middle of the night, Sharon visits her friend, Ian, who says she can stay in his house; Ian's half-brother, Ben, who is Phil's son, finds out Sharon is staying and orders Ian to make her leave but Ian refuses because Sharon is his best friend and she is pregnant so Ben says he will leave, taking his daughter, Lexi, and Lexi's mother, Lola, with him. The Panesar brothers find a flat to rent in Walford but their sister, Ash, finds out they are moving there and that their terminally ill mother, Suki, is fine with it; Ash, who has fallen out with Suki,[ω] tells her brothers they are not welcome there. Iqra and Vinny conspire to get Ash and Kheerat talking, however, when Sikh Kheerat finds out that Iqra, Ash's girlfriend, is Muslim, he says that being bisexual was not "controversial" enough; Ash says people do not change and leaves. Daniel visits Jean for their planned day out but he suffers pain and ends up asleep; he later tells Jean he did not want her to see this but she says she wants to spend every second she can with him; they declare their love for each other as they dance together.

Gray and his wife, Chantelle, return from holiday; she bumps into her old school friend, Jags, and Gray sees them; Gray gets Chantelle to take a pregnancy test and asks about Jags but she says he is just a friend; the test result is negative and Gray says he is disappointed and thinks Chantelle does not feel the same; he grabs her arm, seriously hurting her; she suspects she has a broken arm so asks him to take her to the hospital; she says she loves him and apologises for making him feel like she does not. Louise is upset that everything reminds her of her ex-fiancé and father of her baby, Keanu, but her half-brother, Ben, says Keanu's murder is her own fault. Slater family matriarch Mo decides to hold a séance to for Jean to contact Daniel; Jean meets Daniel and Kush, the boyfriend of Jean's relative Kat, arrives, revealing he already found out that Daniel is alive; they tell Daniel about the séance and he arrives during it to surprise Kat and Mo; they are both angry that Jean already knew he is alive until she reveals that he paid their rent. Karen tells police officer Jack that she will not report Keanu missing, her daughter Chantelle that she is not worried about Keanu and her boyfriend Billy that he is not supportive about Keanu so ends their relationship. Whitney finds out that Leo, who has been stalking her, has taken a pitch on the market where she works and despite her protests, market inspector Mr Lister allows him to continue; Martin offers support to Whitney.

There was no episode broadcast on 6 January because of live coverage of the 2019–20 FA Cup on that day,[25] meaning that week's episodes were shifted to the next broadcast slot with two episodes being shown on 10 January.[26]

Honey tells Billy she was sick from food poisoning and the wrappers were because she was clearing out the fridge; Billy asks Mitch about the date and he says Honey left after he gave her his chips; Lola finds Billy researching eating disorders, and he says he thinks Honey is making herself sick so Lola agrees to help him find a way to help her. Vinny gets Keegan a moped and they go for a ride together; when they return, PC Stevens stops them for a routine search as there was recently a robbery on a moped; Keegan is calm[αα] but Vinny accuses the police of racism; they are then late for a sandwich delivery and lose business; Vinny says Keegan should stand up to the police but Keegan's wife, Tiffany, believes Keegan did the right thing. Denise puts Lola in charge of her salon, Fox & Hair. Mick sees a bank payment to a hotel dating to New Year's Eve; Shirley tells him to find out if Linda stayed in a hotel or it it was fraud. Leo returns to work on the market; Jack tells Whitney to keep a record of any incidents, which she says means she is then waiting for "something really bad" to happen.

Ben confronts Louise over what she asked Martin and tells her to keep quiet; Louise's friend, Bex, tells Lisa that she is worried about Louise; when Louise is struggling to stop Peggy crying, Lisa stops her from smothering her with a pillow saying she could have killed her; Louise says Keanu is dead and it is her fault. Sonia, a nurse, finds out that George Watson, the man left in a coma when Martin was involved in a hit and run, has woken up and asks him if he remembers anything; he says he remembers the name Martin and will be speaking to the police the next day. Billy worries that Honey is still making herself sick and Ash sees Honey looking at pregnancy tests in the pharmacy. Kat and Whitney swap jobs to keep Leo away from Whitney; Leo says he and Whitney are both victims and he wants her to love him. Callum tells Ben that he can handle Ben's crimes if they get back together but Ben says he is responsible for a man's death so Callum leaves and Ben breaks down in tears. Linda drinks hidden alcohol and Mick believes she is not drinking but Shirley and Tina are suspicious and Shirley says she will be watching Linda closely. The Vic is announced winner of the Best Pub competition and the Carters are awarded with a boat party on the River Thames for the staff and regulars. Billy finds Honey's breakfast in the bin; Ash asks Honey to take a pregnancy test, which is negative; she says her bingeing, purging and starving can affect her menstrual cycle and she should get help; Honey finds out that Billy has removed the lock from the bathroom door and tells Billy she does not need help and will move out. Kat finds out that someone slandered the Slaters' cleaning business and that she was reported for working on the market without a licence; Leo is blamed though he does not admit it but Dotty congratulates him. Kat's "surprise" birthday party takes place with Habiba still thinking it is for Mo.

Mitch continues to make gin in the bath, annoying Karen. Daniel tells Jean that he wants to have sex with her; Jean eventually agrees and afterwards, she says she can face anything with him there. Leo and Dotty go for a drink and later they kiss in an alleyway but he calls her by Whitney's name so she leaves and tells Martin that Leo is "a creep". Honey decides to stay with her aunt, Caroline Bishop (Una Stubbs), and although Billy, Janet and Will are upset, she tells Billy that he loves her too much to give her the care she needs. Stuart and Rainie set Callum up on a date with a man called Simon but Callum leaves after Simon realises Callum is not over a past relationship; Callum sees Ben and Sharon warns him to stay away from the "toxic" Mitchell family. Mitch sells his gin but he realises Karen took a bath in it, not realising it was not just water in the bath, however, Mick praises the drink but Mitch is forced to say it was a one-off.

Sonia tells Martin that George was blackmailing her and she stole Dot's money; Martin then tells Dot that he stole her money. Rainie tries to sell funeral deals to cancer patients Daniel and Jean; Jean tells Daniel she does not want to talk about death as it spoils the time they have left together. Whitney arranges a meeting with a former supplier of hers, Mr Hobbs, with a view to Clean Slater cleaning his factories; he offers Kat the contract but then tries to kiss her; she knees him in the groin so he says he has read online reviews saying she will have sex with her clients; Kat says the reviews are a hoax and orders him out.

EastEnders celebrated its 35th anniversary on 19 February 2020. It was reported on 14 January that during the anniversary week (17–23 February), one character would be killed off during a boat party on the River Thames. The episodes from that week are set over a 24-hour period with each episode showing the day's events from a different perspective. The week also includes the birth of Sharon Mitchell's (Letitia Dean) baby, fathered by Keanu Taylor (Danny Walters), and the return of Ian Beale's (Adam Woodyatt) son, Peter Beale (Dayle Hudson). Executive producer Jon Sen said of the week of episodes: "For the 35th anniversary we wanted to entertain the EastEnders audience on the iconic river which has heralded the start of the show for 35 years. This unmissable week of episodes is destined to be exciting, gripping and heart-breaking – it will be a week that will go down in EastEnders history."[27]

Additionally in February, Leo King (Tom Wells) departed the series in February after being stabbed by Whitney Dean (Shona McGarty) in an act of self-defence.[11]

Kathy threatens to tell the newspapers about Ian's falling out with Bobby, threatening his position in the council, and forcing Ian to speak to Bobby; Ian hears about the social media posts from Jack and Bobby realises Ian is only there to protect his own reputation; later, a brick is smashed through Bobby's window.

Whitney sees Mick and calls him for help; he sees Leo and she confirms that she has not called the police; Mick wipes the knife clean and tells her to come on the boat so they can dispose of the knife in the river and deal with Leo's body later; Linda then sees Mick with Whitney on the Square. The Vic's party starts on the boat and Phil sneaks on board with a gun. The boat is evacuated but Mick searches for Linda while Ian runs, Kat searches for Kush and Bex and Jack worries about where Whitney is. Mick finds Linda, who has gained consciousness but is trapped; as the water rises, Mick is unable to free her ankle so she tells him to go for the sake of their children but he says he loves her and will not leave her. Meanwhile, back in Walford, Sonia returns home and sees Leo just before PC Paul Campbell arrives at the door.

After Ben takes Sharon hostage, Ben calls Keanu and gives him an hour to return Callum or he will shoot Sharon; Ben reveals to Sharon that Keanu kidnapped Callum and Sharon reveals she is not leaving with Keanu; Sharon then goes into labour. Dennis sees Keanu and discovers he is alive so he goes to the boat party in defiance of Sharon's wishes. Sharon calls Keanu, saying she is in labour but that she will not be leaving with him as it is what Dennis wants and asks him to let Callum go; Keanu says he will get Dennis, revealing he went to the boat. Phil threatens Karen with the gun but Billy, Phil's cousin, enters and knocks Phil out; Billy says he is on Karen's side and she should have told him about Keanu; they then realise Phil has gone. Kathy arrives at the scene of Sharon's labour and tells Ben that Phil is back; Sharon says Phil will kill Keanu and Ben will never know where Callum is so Ben leaves. On the boat, Phil orders Keanu to tell Shirley where Callum is, but when Shirley goes there, she is unable to find him because he has escaped his chains but fallen and knocked himself out so Phil says Keanu lied and they fight; the captain, Matthew Cox, tries to break up the fight but is knocked out; Phil and Keanu knock the ship's wheel by accident and in their struggle, Phil's gun is fired at a window; Ben arrives to stop Phil killing Keanu to save Callum and after the boat crashes, Phil points his gun at Keanu while Ben points his at Phil.

Phil, Ben and Keanu are all rescued, Bex, Ian and Dennis are all unconscious when they are brought back to land. Keanu tells Ben that he was not lying about Callum being where he said but Ben has ringing in his ears and cannot hear him. Whitney tells a police officer to arrest her because she killed somebody, showing him the knife. Sharon gives birth to her son and paramedics arrive to take her to hospital. Kathy goes back to the hospital and meets Peter; there, they see Bex and Ian arrive at the hospital. Dennis is unable to be resuscitated, devastating Phil and Keanu who see this. Bex and Ian both wake up; Kathy tells Ian that Bobby is fine but Dennis did not survive; Ian cries and Kathy says he did everything he could to try to save him and is proud of him. Keanu visits Sharon and she can sense something is wrong; she cries after hearing Dennis is dead and blames herself and her affair with Keanu; she screams at him that she never wants to see him again; Keanu says goodbye to Karen and leaves Walford. Back home, Linda admits to Mick that she is an alcoholic and she wants to stop. Ben shouts for Callum, who is still unconscious and has not been found. Shirley tells Stuart that Callum is missing; Stuart confronts Ben but Jay calms him down; Stuart then threatens Ben, whose hearing is so distorted from the shouting that it hurts his head. Linda tells Mick she meant what she said about loving him and giving up alcohol; she pours away her hidden alcohol and rips up the divorce application; Mick then tells Linda about how he helped Whitney after Leo's death and Linda tells him to tell the police what happened. People start to gossip about Whitney and Leo; Tiffany convinces Gray to represent Whitney. Jean tells Daniel to write a will, and his care nurse says the hospice is closing but he can have hospice care at home, so Jean says he will move in with her.

Daniel tells Jean he will not die until she is given the all-clear from cancer. Karen tells Sharon that the boat crashed because Phil was attacking Keanu on it; Sharon blames Phil for Dennis's death. Ian and Bobby find out Peter has returned and Ian asks Peter to move back for a while, which hs agrees to.

Keegan buys Tiffany a wedding ring and hides it in a cupcake but Tiffany bins the cupcake on bin collection day; Keegan is forced to reveal what he did and they search the bins and find the ring, but Keegan is wearing only a towel which he accidentally drops, briefly revealing his naked body to his neighbours; he then kneels to present Tiffany with the ring. Ben tells Callum that because he cannot hear, they should break up but Callum tells Ben he loves him, however, Ben realises his hearing is getting worse and he cannot hear even loud noises so he breaks down in tears. Jean talks to Stuart about Daniel's funeral but Stuart reveals that Daniel did not want a service and left money for people who cannot afford a funeral; they then laugh over a joke Daniel told Stuart.

Gray visits Whitney and says he will do his best to show that Leo was abusive but she is sure she will be kept in prison; Gray then tells Tiffany that Whitney is "upbeat"; at home he tells Chantelle he is under so much pressure and will probably lose the case meaning he would never be hired again so he should stop representing Whitney; Chantelle tries to tell him not to but he grabs her and pushes her against the wall in frustration. Bobby asks Peter to stay in Walford; Peter tells Ian that he should have believed him instead of Dotty and Ian says he rescued a drunk Dennis from a locked room on the boat; he tells Peter it is good to have him back home. Stuart brings Daniel's ashes to Jean; Daniel's bed is delivered and Jean realises that Mo wants to sell it but Jean decides to give it to Suki instead; Suki's lie is almost revealed when Jean and Jags give different names for Suki's consultant but she says she had to change consultants. Stuart meets a client, Larry Sanderson, at the funeral home, but when he sees Rainie he says he does not want her involved in his wife's funeral; Rainie tells Stuart that Larry was a regular client from her days as a sex worker and she realises she cannot forget her past but Stuart insists they have both changed. Mick takes Linda for dinner but she is put off after seeing Rainie and Stuart; Rainie tells her that support groups do help but Linda says she is not a "junkie" like Rainie, however, Rainie tells her that she is the same as her and all other addicts and she will be "branded" for life. Suki, Ash and Kheerat visit Jean so Suki can explain her reasons for lying; Jean says Suki brought unnecessary pain and despair to her family and used Jean; Suki says her plan to reunite her family worked while Jean's children do not care about her having cancer; Jean bans Suki from her house to which Suki says it is actually her house; Ash tells Suki that she does not care about humiliating Jean, to which Suki says she cares about important things like her family; Ash says her plan did not work as she and Vinny will never forgive her.

Stuart decides to propose to Rainie but she causes a scene in the restaurant; he says he wants a normal life like Mick and Linda which enrages Rainie. Karen looks after Kayden while Sharon goes to see Dennis's coffin; she talks to him about the plans she had for them, crying that she will never love anyone like she loves him; Denise tells Sharon about her decision to have her baby adopted[αζ] and later, Sharon takes Kayden back to Karen, saying she wants her to have him because she cannot be a good mother to him. Dr Laghari tells Ben he can have a cochlear implant in four weeks' time; Ben tells Danny he is not interested in doing business with him and when Callum tells Ben not to get involved, Ben says his hearing loss does not change who he is. After Keegan speaks to Mitch and Mitch realises he had fewer opportunities to do well in life, Mitch decides to tell Bailey how difficult things will be when she is older, saying some people cannot see past differences and are suspicious but not to let them stop her fulfilling her dreams; Bailey walks out.

Mitch looks after Mia and Bailey at Chantelle's house and finds a card for a psychotherapist in a drawer; Chantelle says Gray got it for Whitney and Mitch says Gray is a good man. After taking a phone call, Kat tells Kush she has to leave Walford, leaving him with her family. Sharon cannot face going out when she sees Karen with Kayden; Ian gives Karen some money to help look after Kayden but says she has to leave Walford as Sharon cannot cope seeing Kayden, otherwise Kayden will have to be taken into care. Callum hears Ben was arrested and that Ben was in the Prince Albert with another man; Ben is released without charge because Hugo did not want his wife to find out; Jack warns Callum to reconsider his choice of boyfriend if he wants a career with the police; Callum then shouts at Ben, asking if Ben ever thinks about him; Ben says he is sorry and cries in Callum's arms. Keegan's loan application is declined and he tells Tiffany he will still be selling sandwiches when he is 50; she tells him to keep trying because being black is not a disability and he is not the only person who is discriminated against; she says what he is doing is wrecking their marriage.

Sharon tells Ian she knows Dennis is dead beacuse of Phil; Phil then arrives in the Vic after laying flowers for Dennis. Linda tells Mick she could be the kind of person to only have one drink although she did not want one even after what Sharon said; later, she is tempted and tests herself by drinking some vodka and then putting the rest away, however, she sees a line was drawn on the bottle and realises she will be found out. Habiba tells Jags, who has been flirting with her, that if a Muslim is good enough for him, then Iqra is good enough for Ash; after he compliments her, Habiba and Jags kiss.

Habiba and Jags have had sex and she says he likes that he talks about his feelings; he admits he was talking about a pet rat so she accuses him of tricking her into sex and throws him out of the house naked. Callum tells Ben that it will be fine if his deafness cannot be cureed and he will always be there for him; Ben tells Callum he loves him and Callum uses sign language to reply; Callum later asks Ben to start learning sign language.

Ian is annoyed as Bobby has developed an infatuation with Dotty; Ian finds out from Ben that the garage has no CCTV so he tells Dotty that her threats will end; Dotty tells Vinny what Ian did to Dennis so Vinny says to stay in his face and he will crack; Dotty invites herself to the Beales' house for dinner and makes Ian unconfortable; he later tells her she has no evidence of what he did but she says she no longer wants the garage and says she will make sure Sharon finds out what he did and will keep reminding him. Having no references for Ruby, Vinny decides to throw a party in his home to prove his DJing credentials to Ruby, coming up with a way to get his family out of the house. Billy brings Karen flowers and says he is happy to continue their relationship long-distance; Karen tells Mitch he and Bailey should not move with her and they are good friends. Mick and Linda try to keep the sale of the Vic a secret from Shirley and Tina but gossip has already spread and they find out, however, they are both supportive when they realise it is to help Linda. Sharon tells Phil that Ben lost his hearing; Phil tests Ben and realises it is true; Ben thinks Phil is disappointed in him and tells Callum that Phil sees his deafness as a weakness; later Ben is unable to understand anything Phil says but Phil writes down "I'm proud of you" and Ben hugs him.

Ben gets drunk and then sees Danny and Phil leaving so he takes Gray's car from the garage and follows them; he finds them with other men amd Danny announces that Phil will take the blame for a man who is either dead or unconscious at the scene; Danny calls Ben a "freak" and fires a gun next to his ear, causing Ben to scream as sounds ring in his ear. Phil and Ben overpower Danny and the two other men and escape, then steal the money from another man; as they leave, the police follow but they are able to lose them, however, Ben cries as he realises his hearing has gone completely.

This episode is shown entirely from Ben's point of view, including limited audio and fractured sentences to reflect Ben's hearing loss and to highlight "the reality many deaf people in the UK face today".[32] The episode also used on-screen captions to reveal how little Ben actually hears as well as distorted camera angles and lenses, to show how disorientating Ben's hearing loss has become.[33]

Karen and Billy plan a day of fun but Mitch and Keegan are in the Prince Albert, so Karen goes to talk to Keegan; Billy tells Iqra and Tina about Mitch and Karen but they say Mitch is Karen's past; Iqra talks to Tina about supplying food to the bar but Keegan is reluctant to join the discussion so he leaves; Karen follows him, leaving Billy and Mitch to play air hockey; Billy is fed up with Mitch's comments so challenges him to a fight outside; it is playful at first but Mitch causes Billy's nose to bleed; Billy tells Karen to ask Mitch to move out if she wants to be with him. Dotty is released with a caution for assault; she is also suspended from university so confronts Ian, saying he will tell Sharon everything; he says nobody will believe her as it will just sound like revenge for his reporting a crime; he tells her to stop blackmailing him and leave his sons alone. Gray visits Suki but while she answers the door to someone else, he sneakily takes photos of Kheerat's bank statements.

This episode is the last that was produced before filming was suspended. From 22 June 2020, the time slot usually taken by EastEnders on Mondays was filled by a new series called EastEnders: Secrets from the Square, while the Tuesday slot was taken by repeats of classic episodes under the title EastEnders: Iconic Episodes. The end credits for this episode had the words "To Be Continued" inserted at the end.[34]

EastEnders returned to screens on 7 September 2020 following the suspension of filming earlier in the year. New filming techniques were introduced to keep actors socially distanced, such as CGI via the use of plate shots, with actors filming scenes in isolation and being digitally brought together in the editing process. Perspex screens were also used to bring actors closer together and also to allow them to kiss, although in some cases, an actor's real-life partner was used for a kissing scene.[34] It was reported on 12 June 2020 that new episodes would be around 20 minutes in length, instead of around 30 minutes.[35] A mural was added to the set, depicting a black woman and measuring 5 by 2 metres (16.4 ft × 6.6 ft). It was painted by visual artist Dreph (real name Neequaye Dsane), who said it was "a really exciting opportunity" to have his work become a fixture on the show. Sen said it was a "timely addition... that reflects events taking place in the real world".[36]

It was reported that the show would cover "timely and relevant" storylines as the characters emerge from lockdown, with the COVID-19 pandemic being part of the storylines and the fictional businesses being affected as real businesses were. Storylines in September 2020 included the effect of the lockdown on those in abusive relationships with the characters Gray Atkins (Toby-Alexander Smith) and his wife, Chantelle Atkins (Jessica Plummer), which was reported to involve a "tragic" ending. It was revealed that the characters Martin Fowler (James Bye) and Ruby Allen (Louisa Lytton) have entered a relationship and started living together.[34] Former Queen Vic pub landlady Linda Carter (Kellie Bright) is now working in the launderette and her husband, Mick Carter (Danny Dyer), is out of work.[37] Ian Beale (Adam Woodyatt) and Sharon Watts (Letitia Dean) have been living in and running the Vic with Sharon's infant son, who has been renamed from Kayden to Albie.[38] Ian's son, Bobby Beale (Clay Milner Russell), has developed "issues with constant and extreme hand-washing routines" after becoming "increasingly nervous" about contracting COVID-19.[38] Callum "Halfway" Highway (Tony Clay) has been fast-tracked into the police force and has been separated from his boyfriend, Ben Mitchell (Max Bowden), during lockdown.[39] Patrick Trueman (Rudolph Walker) developed COVID-19 and was in intensive care but recovered and is now staying with his son, Anthony Trueman (Nicholas Bailey). Phil Mitchell (Steve McFadden) has started divorce proceedings against Sharon. Habiba Ahmed (Rukku Nahar) and Jags Panesar (Amar Adatia) are now in a relationship but she is insisting on keeping it a secret.[40] It was also revealed that Kat Slater (Jessie Wallace) returned Cherry Slater to her mother, Hayley Slater (Katie Jarvis), and returned to Walford before lockdown started, and therefore the character of Cherry had left the show.[41] A new character, Ellie Nixon, played by Mica Paris, was introduced in September, as a "formidable" character said to be among the "most villainous" of EastEnders characters.[34]

Chantelle meets David, a divorce lawyer; he says that if Gray contests the divorce, it could be expensive; she asks Kheerat for a loan but says she cannot tell him what it is for. Gray installs a tracking app on Chantelle's phone, saying he is also tracking the children and it will keep them all safe. Callum catches a criminal attempting to steal money from the market; at the police station, DI Thompson tells Callum that the criminal is alleging excessive force and he has to visit A&E, so Callum is put on CCTV-checking duty while he waits; he sees footage of Ben at the warehouse months earlier but tells Thompson that he has found nothing; Thompson says they are trying to prove that Danny Hardcastle was involved. Kat makes comments about Ruby and Martin's relationship, saying that if Stacey was around, Martin would not be with Ruby. Ruby contacts her bank about transactions for designer teddy bears, saying they were not made by her.

Callum tells Ben to speak to Phil about his plan but Phil says they do not "grass" and that the police have nothing on them; Ben decides to call Danny anyway. Ruby tells Vinny she wanted to call off the robbery; Vinny says he does not know if Martin saw his face and that if he goes down for robbery, Ruby will too.

Meanwhile, Stuart and Rainie wait in the Vic for their respective hen and stag parties but Callum does not turn up so they are on their own. Ruby tells Whitney she said she loves Martin but that Martin has been avoiding her and she has also kept all her financial problems a secret from him; Whitney tells her to be honest so she goes to Martin who says he loves her too. Sharon tells Ian that his targets are impossible but he repeats his threat to find someone else to run the pub.

Mitch calls Chantelle, leaving a voicemail to say he loves her and is always there to talk about anything. Gray returns home and Chantelle gives him one last look before she dies from exsanguination. Gray places a toy truck on the floor in front of her to make it appear as though she stepped on it and slipped, then drops the milk bottle, smashing it; he shakes Chantelle as if he has just found her and calls 999, saying his wife has had an accident.

Gray is brought home and he and Karen cry in each other's arms as Mitch and Kheerat look on in suspicion. Ruby discovers a £20,000 transfer has been made out of her bank account; she admits to Martin that she has been defrauded by someone who has opened an account in her name and even knew her mother's maiden name; Kat secretly listens and calls Stacey, saying that Ruby will call the police on her; Stacey says she does not care; Kush hears this phone call and Kat tells him that Stacey has been stealing from Ruby because Ruby "stole" her ex-husband and that is how she paid to get his market stall back; Kush tells her to call Stacey or he will, and they do not realise that Arthur, his son with Stacey, has heard this; Arthur then tells Ruby and Martin that Stacey took the money, so Ruby demands Kat give her Stacey's address, but Stacey then arrives back in Walford. Ritchie Scott tells Phil that there is a lot of evidence against Ben and wonders if Callum can be trusted; Jack advises Callum not to get involved and later, Phil asks if Callum knew what Ben was planning; Phil says he warned Ben off doing anything but Callum blames Phil for Ben wanting to impress his father; Callum tells Thompson he cannot betray Ben's family but Thompson reminds him that Ben will go to prison and gives Callum until the next morning to decide.

Denise realises that 11-year-old Amy has developed a crush on Isaac and tells him to stop giving tutorials but he says he needs the money. Kheerat gives Chantelle's memory box to Mitch and says she was leaving Gray; Mitch realises Kheerat was planning to go with her.

Sharon worries that Linda and Max are flirting and tells Linda that Max cannot be friends with a woman; Linda tells Sharon to trust her as she would not cheat on Mick; Ollie and Abi have a play date so Linda can take photographs of them in superhero costumes as promotion; Linda is worried by Max's flirtatious comments and says he should leave afterwards but when Ollie is scared by the camera flash, Max talks to Ollie and gets him to continue; later, Max realises Sharon has spoken to Linda and Linda says she is having problems with Mick; Max says he kissed Linda because he wanted to and that has not changed; Linda is then unsure about a second play date, however, after she steals a bottle of wine from the club and pours it at home, she tries to call Mick and the line goes dead so she calls Max to arrange the play date and then pours the wine away. Mick returns without telling Linda and he finds out about Linda's business idea and that Max has been helping her; later at home, Mick pretends to be asleep when Linda says they have some time to themselves. Blood is found on a rental van parked outside the Vic; Kheerat is questioned as the person who rented the van and he says he was having drinks; Suki is angry that there was blood but Kheerat tells her not to worry; Kheerat then meets Peter and tells him that they are each other's alibi, that they went for a drink and went straight home. Ian has an operation because of a bleed on his brain; he recovers and when Tina hears about this and Bobby's confession, she speaks to Jack but he says the confession did not hold up and Tina is still a suspect so she has to find her alibi. Kathy tells Sharon she did a generous thing because Ian thought he would die but now she must get the marriage annulled; Sharon says that she is the person Ian wanted and being married to her best friend is a good thing so she cannot get the marriage annulled, it is not Kathy's decision and the only person in Kathy's family that she has to be there for is Ian. Rainie returns but she and Stuart are immediately taken in for questioning by Arthurs; Rainie is released first, having said she and Stuart were at home watching Deal or No Deal; Callum says that is random and clearly untrue and Stuart would never say the same thing; when Stuart comes home, he tells Rainie he also coincidentally said they were watching Deal or No Deal, so Stuart says that whatever the truth is, they are "made for each other", and Rainie is extremely happy. Linda tells Max that she gave him an alibi to Jack; Max tells Jack to ignore Linda's alibi and Jack warns him against falling in lust with a married woman. Isaac speaks to Honey and Jay about other children and families who are struggling with food so Honey decides to arrange a community Christmas dinner.

This episode was scheduled to be broadcast at 8.35 pm, however, following the death of actress Barbara Windsor, who played Peggy Mitchell, it was moved to 9.05 pm, allowing for the biopic Babs to be shown directly before it. The episode is dedicated to Windsor.

Kathy gets Callum to talk to Bobby about his compulsions; Bobby says that by doing things in sets of five, he feels safe and that bad things will stop happening but they do not stop regardless; Kathy apologises, saying nobody realised, but Bobby says Peter knew and urged him not to see a therapist; Kathy confronts Peter, who admits he has enjoyed seeing Bobby suffer because he killed his twin sister and he can never forgive him; Peter also accuses Kathy of starting the problems when she faked her death and abandoned her family;[αψ] Ben punches Peter, which gives Ian a flashback of Ben standing over him in the Vic after his attack; Ian calls the police and Ben is arrested but Ian tells Sharon that he will never be safe from the Mitchells if Ben is convicted. Denise worries about Raymond's Christmas so speaks to Cassius; he says it is fine not to bring him to church but he needs a calm, safe and nurturing environment so he can flourish; Denise tells her family this and that she wants a traditional Christmas, to which Patrick, who has made a full recovery from COVID-19, says it will be a "traditional Trueman Christmas". Kim finds out she is doing a work trial for Kathy along with another woman, Mila; they are competitive and a bottle is smashed as Kathy walks in; Kim tries to explain how hard her life has been while Mila says it was her fault, so Kathy offers Mila the job because she was honest. Gray tells Shirley he wants Tina to move out so his children can move back in; Shirley tells Tina and Tina wonders why Shirley is putting Gray before her own family; Shirley tells Tina that she stopped Gray from killing himself and his children, which alarms Tina because she says he has it in him to be a killer.

Rainie and Stuart go to take Thompson's body in a coffin for burial but the hearse will not start so they have the coffin returned to the funeral parlour; Callum later says a colleague of his saw Thompson the day before when he had his disciplinary, so Stuart and Rainie decide to check the coffin and it is empty, so Stuart hopes Thompson cannot remember what happened to him. Denise says she wants Christmas to be traditional, not "Trueman traditional"; Kim makes fun of Denise in the Vic, unaware that Denise hears it but Kim and Patrick both promise to behave. Ian is annoyed that the police appear unbothered about the fact he has now had two bullets delivered.

Kheerat tells Suki he pushed Ian but did not attack him; she says the CCTV footage of Ben will keep Kheerat safe but Kheerat warns her about declaring war on the Mitchells; Ben then visits Suki and Kheerat, saying he has a contact inside prison who can make Jags' life hell and shows Kheerat photos of Jags inside prison; Kheerat takes a copy of the CCTV footage and gives it to Ben in exchange for Jags' safety, saying he will delete the last copy; Kheerat then views the footage and makes a call to Peter; they meet and Kheerat shows him the footage; Peter says Ian "deserved it". Kim convinces Honey to audition a "bad Santa" for her community Christmas dinner; Kim, Honey and Karen pick Isaac as the winner but he decides to decline so Kim picks Mitch over Billy.

Loud bangs are heard from the Vic and Kathy finds Ian cowering in the kitchen; Ian tells Jack that he needs protection because someone was in the Vic with a gun; after searching for evidence, Jack tells Ian, Kathy, Ben, Peter and Bobby that it was fireworks set off in the barrel store; Ian's family start to feel sympathetic towards him and Kathy is glad the family are together but Ian then drops a lighter and everyone realises Ian let off the fireworks himself; Ian says he had no choice as he needs police protection. Jack tells Max that a shard of blue glass was found in Ian's clothes and the police need to find where it came from. Whitney tells Tina that Gray can clear her name but Tina says he is a control freak and it is strange that his children are not living with him and asks if Chantelle ever mentioned bullying; Whitney tells Gray about this conversation; Gray then finds the pizza delivery person, who remembers Tina; Gray pays him to make a call to the police station; Tina is taken in for questioning and Arthurs says her DNA has been found under Ian's fingernails and that the witness says he saw her leaving the Vic around the time of the attack; he says they will find a weapon with her fingerprints and he will submit evidence to have her charged with attempted murder. Max then buries the Lucy Beale Award, made from blue glass, at the allotment. Gray also tells Karen and Mitch that he wants his children home on Christmas Day; Karen tells Mitch that Chantelle loved Christmas and having the children there would have taken her mind off things; Mitch says they can make the flat a Christmas-free zone but when they get home, Billy is dressed in Christmas clothes in an attempt to cheer Karen up; she goes to another room in frustration. Linda returns home and Mick implies that he knows she was not with a friend; she tells Max that Mick knows and Mick sees them talking; he writes out a gift tag to Linda but changes it to say it is from Ollie.

On the day of Honey's community Christmas dinner, she discovers the fridge in the restaurant has broken down and the food stored inside cannot be used; Suki refuses to help by making a donation from the shop but Jay calls in a favour from a friend and is able to get a caterer; Jay gives a speech at the event, telling everyone how generous Honey has been. Karen tells Bernadette that she wants to be on her own for Christmas so Bernadette urges her to talk to Billy; Karen ends her relationship with Billy, telling him he clearly still loves Honey because he still wears his wedding ring; Billy goes to find Honey at the restaurant and walks in on her and Jay kissing. Denise invites Jack to hers for Christmas. DCI Arthurs tells Ian that Tina has been charged, while Jack tells Max that he thinks Tina is innocent because the evidence is weak and the weapon has not been found; Tina is given bail. Max tells Linda he knows she attacked Ian because her award was used for the attack and they should flee; Linda denies the attack and says she left the award on the bar after she won it and did not see it again; Max says they should still leave because if the award is found she could be implicated but she says she cannot leave with or without Ollie; Max says she does not want to leave Mick but that Mick does not care about her; he then takes keys from her bag. A brick is thrown through a window of the Vic with a note saying "This isn't over"; Ian and Sharon confront Tina but Gray and Shirley say she was there the whole time; Tina desperately tells Ian she did not attack him; Ian tells Sharon he believes Tina.

Billy walks away from Honey and Jay in disgust; Jay follows but Billy refuses to listen; Honey tells Jay that Billy will never forgive them; they tell Billy it was a mistake and happened only because they were on a buzz from the even and it will not happen again; Billy says if it does happen again, they will both be dead to him. Mick finds Max in his house; Max says he and Linda are seeing each other but Mick says he knows; Linda arrives and tells Max to leave; Linda tells Mick that they have been distant for months and she has felt lonely because he does not talk to her; she says he does not even care that she has had sex with another man and shut her out so much that he allowed it to happen; she shouts at him to show him that their marriage is worth saving and threatens to drink alcohol, asking for a reason not to; he says not to let him be the reason she slips up so she slaps him and asks why he will not fight her her; he says he has no fight left so she leaves. Linda confronts Max over what he did but he says he does not want to hide their relationship as she is special to him; she says she still loves Mick but it is over between them and cries in Max's arms. Shirley tells Tinan to leave the country, handing her cash, because a jury will probably find her guilty; Tina asks Mick for advice and he tells her not to leave because they will get through it together. Ian makes a list of people he has wronged and decides to apologise to them all in the hope that they will leave him alone; he apologises to Peter and Bobby but they say it is fake, so he says he has been a bad father but loves them both and cannot lose any more children; they say they will see him at the community event later. At the event, old Christmas photos are displayed of past and current Albert Square residents but then a photo of Ian appears, saying "RIP Ian Beale", giving his death date as 25 December 2020; Ian looks around horrified as he realises his attacker is there; Ben, Phil, Kheerat, Suki and Bobby all look at Ian and then Peter emerges from hiding.

On Christmas Day, Ian sees Ben making a gun hand gesture to him so confronts him; the police arrive and Ian points them to Ben but Arthurs arrests Peter as his fingerprints were found on the bullets sent to Ian; Peter says he sent the threats to make Ian uncomfortable but did not attack him. Ian takes Sharon to Dennis's grave and she sends him home; he is tormented by noises which is revealed to be Ben. Sharon calls Phil to meet at the grave and their conversation reveals that Sharon heard Dennis's voicemail from the boat crash two months previously and she asked Phil to kill Ian in revenge for his causing Dennis's death; she is angry that Phil did not kill Ian because he was disturbed by Peter spraying the graffiti and says she wants Ian dead today; she says that marrying Ian was not part of her plan but she had no choice and she has had to pretend to like him. Ben tells Ian he found him after he was attacked and left him there because he deserved it; Ben threatens Ian with a baseball bat but Phil sees Ben and Ben leaves; Phil says he saw Ben go in and stopped him to protect him; Ben says he would not kill Ian. Sharon returns home to find Ian is alive and she asks Phil why; Phil says he find Ben and had to stop him because he has a motive; Phil refuses to kill Ian so Sharon says she will do it herself. Kathy finds customers are helping themselves at the Vic and Ian tells her that Ben left him to die after he was attacked; Kathy says he swore he was not near the Vic so Ian realises she gave him a false alibi; Ian throws Kathy out of the pub and starts smashing windows, glasses and ornaments, telling all the customers to leave but they just laugh; Sharon arrives telling Ian he is safe; Sharon then cooks a Christmas pudding, adds crushed tablets to it and serves it to Ian.

Denise takes Raymond to church, where Cassius introduces a speaker on the subject of "new beginnings"; Denise is shocked to see it is her ex-husband, Lucas, who been serving a life-sentence in prison;[ββ] Denise takes Raymond out of the church but Lucas sees her and follows, saying he is on a rehabilitation programme; Denise and Lucas's daughter, Chelsea, joins them and asks who the boy in the car is calling Denise "mummy"; Denise goes home and tells her family that Lucas is back and has been following her; Chelsea arrives and says she decided to give Lucas a chance and they have been in touch for a few months; Denise says he is a psychopath but Chelsea says he is her father and she chooses to have him in her life; Denise says he manipulative and dangerous but very good at playing the opposite. Patrick finds Lucas, confronting him and says he will make sure Chelsea knows how despicable he is; Lucas clenches his fists but disappears when Jack calls to Patrick. Denise realises that Raymond called her "mummy" and Jack says it shows he trusts her.

Martin wraps presents for Ruby and Stacey but mixes them up; Martin thinks Ruby has nothing planned for Christmas so he spends time with the Slaters; Stacey receives an expensive watch from him and Jean tells Stacey it means they still love each other. Ruby waits for Martin, having arranged for caterers to cook their Christmas dinner; she goes to the Slaters' and Martin convinces her to stay for dinner as they have nothing planned; Ruby opens her present and finds a key ring. When they all plan to go to the pub, Ruby tells Martin she arranged dinner but he says they should eat it the next day and go to the pub; she goes home, telling him she does not care if he stays at the Vic all night. Stacey later kisses Martin, saying they can work things out and she feels the same way as he does; Martin says he mixed up the presents and the watch was meant for Ruby. Jean finds a lump in her breast.

Mick tells Linda they should spend Christmas apart to get used to it and he takes Ollie to see Tina and Shirley at Gray's; Tina gives Mick an old photo of them as children with Katy; he does not show Shirley but thanks Tina for it. Max tells Linda they should still go to New Zealand for a break but she says she could not leave Mick on his own; Shirley arrives, having found out about Linda and Max, and calls Linda a "common tart"; Mick arrives and tells Shirley to shut up; they leave and Linda tells Max that New Zealand would be a good idea. Gray makes comments about Mick and Linda to Tina so Tina says she heard Gray's marriage to Chantelle was not perfect because she heard Chantelle was going to leave him; Mackenzie hears this and asks if it is true; Tina later apologises to Gray and she cleans up after dinner; he tells her to make sure the knifes go in the dishwasher with the blades pointing up.

Mick meets Katy, who tells him that he saved Linda's life but now he can move on but he says he cannot if he has to see Linda and Max together every day. Gray sees DCI Arthurs, who says Peter has been released but Tina will probably not go to court as the witness was unreliable; Gray tells Tina that the witness's statement checks out and she should leave straight away to avoid being arrested; Mick arrives and says he will leave with Tina and they make preparations; Shirley gives Tina a necklace with her name on it and makes her promise to stay in touch; Tina then sees Arthurs and says the witness is lying but Arthurs says the witness was unreliable and she should speak to Gray; Tina confronts Gray and says she will not leave because he is lying and says she knows that Gray was abusing Chantelle because she was also abused and she recognises it in him; she then says Chantelle's death was not an accident and Gray murdered her. Linda finds Mick has packed his things. Ian is unwell and he sees Peter has been released. Kathy tells Sharon to get her and Ian's marriage annulled but Sharon refuses. Ruby tries to talk to Raymond when she sees him playing in the park but Denise calls him away; Ruby then tells Martin she wants a baby with him.

Linda tells Mick that nothing will change if he leaves and Ollie needs him so he puts his bag down; Mick sees Gray, who says Tina has already left; Jack and Arthurs arrive to check on Tina but Gray says she went shopping and has Mick accompany them to check his house; they say it looks like Tina was packing but tell Mick to make sure she answers her bail; Shirley arrives and Mick tells her that Tina has gone; Shirley sees Tina's necklace on the floor but hides it from the police and then pockets it; after the police leave, Mick and Shirley go for a drink and Shirley begs Mick to tell her what is going on in his head and why he and Linda are splitting up; Gray interrupts and says the police will not find Tina, so they thank him for his help. Linda sees Max has booked tickets to New Zealand for New Year's Day and is shocked that it is so soon; Max says her and Mick's relationship is over and it will be a fresh start for them. Denise wonders to Kim why Lucas never murdered her and thinks she is his mistake and his weakness, and has manipulated Chelsea to show her he can take what he wants; Patrick later tells Kim that he cannot allow Lucas to terrorise Denise again. Martin tells Stacey about Ruby wanting a baby and she tells him not to have one just because Ruby wants one as it will lead to resentment; Ruby tells Martin she has no family other than Martin but agrees not to complicate their relationship by having a baby, however, she walks away in tears. Kathy tells Ian not to trap Sharon in a loveless marriage; Ian tells Kathy he does not need her because he has Sharon, however, he later tells Sharon that they should get an annulment; she says her feelings have changed and she is falling in love with him.

Kim and Patrick visit Jack for help getting Lucas put back in prison but Jack warns them that entrapment is illegal and they could go to prison themselves; Patrick visits Phil, saying if he scares off Lucas, he will allow him to see Raymond without Denise knowing; Patrick finds out from Chelsea that she is taking Lucas out for dinner, so at the restaurant, Phil confronts Lucas while Chelsea is out of the room, telling him to stay away from Denise and Walford; Phil tells Patrick that Lucas will not come back and that he wants to see Raymond on New Year's Day; Lucas is then beaten up by a gang after leaving the restaurant. Kush apologises to Ruby for stealing from her; they end up talking and he says he will take the blame for Phil's crimes in exchange for a comfortable life; Ruby says he could go to prison for a long time and offers him a large sum of cash to take Arthur and go to Dubai, saying that Martin might change his mind about wanting a baby if his stepson is no longer around. Billy tells Jay that he will assume the kiss between Jay and Honey was a drunken Christmas mistake and invites Jay to move back in; Honey later tells Jay that she has feelings for him and wants to try for a relationshihp as she is sick of being told by men what she can and cannot do; Jay insists he cannot hurt Billy's feelings. Stuart talks to Mick about Tina and Katy, saying that he is surprised Mick stayed in touch with Katy; Mick says Stuart was not in Katy's care home but Stuart says she was always there when he visited Mick and he was always going to her house after football; Mick walks away.

Instead of the usual credits, at the end of the episode, a list of everyone involved in the making of EastEnders in 2020 was shown, followed by a dedication to Barbara Windsor, who played Peggy Mitchell and died in 2020.

Mick calls the Samaritans and speaks to Joe; Mick says he has split from his wife after 30 years but is just feeling sorry for himself. During the call, Mick flashes back to earlier in the day where he and Linda meet Lee and tell him they have split up; Mick discovers Linda is going to New Zealand and realises she is going with Max; Mick tells Lee that he has caused Linda to leave him. Joe tells Mick not to blame himself but Mick says he does not blame Linda because all his life he has pushed people away, including a friend in care who invited him to his birthday party. In flashback, Linda apologises to Mick for not telling him about going to New Zealand and says she is going the next day for four weeks; she says that Lee thinks Mick is depressed and she can help him, but Mick tells her to go to New Zealand. Mick tells Joe that he thought Frankie was his daughter and she called him weak and insecure, and mentions Katy as her mother; Mick starts having flashbacks to being in care; he leaves his flat and sees Kush putting Arthur into a car. Mick enters the Vic and goes up to the roof; Joe asks Mick why talking about Frankie and being in care upset him; Mick says care was tough but he got through it and things changed after meeting Frankie because he felt a pain that would not go away. Mick walks to the edge of the roof and says he cannot live like this anymore, saying Lee once contemplated suicide and now he understands why. Mick apologises to Joe and thanks him for talking but says he has to go. In a flashback, Lee tells Mick to tell Linda the truth about he he really feels but Mick says he cannot so Lee says to talk to him or at least talk to someone. Joe tells Mick he only called because of what Lee said, and that Lee talked to someone before changing his mind about ending his life. Mick says meeting Frankie and Katy brought back memories; he says Katy told him to not talk to anyone and says that it was Katy who told him not to go that that birthday party but instead took him to her house; he flashes back to Katy taking him home, touching his leg and leading him upstairs. Mick tells Joe that Katy abused him, that he is her victim and she has been covering it up since.
