Why substitute? edit

Why do you recommend this template be substituted rather than just used directly? I can't see any advantage in substitution. In fact there's one big disadvantage: it generates code such as

{{#if:1871|[[Category:Railway stations opened in 1871]]}} ,

which, although valid code, is just plain confusing to other editors who look at the article later. --Dr Greg (talk) 13:07, 5 December 2007 (UTC)Reply

eeks! I thought I had that working where subst wouldn't include the #if part. The theory was that substing the template would leave the article with just the categories and none of the code. I guess at this point, it probably is better not to subst it. Slambo (Speak) 14:18, 5 December 2007 (UTC)Reply
