Flexibility for changes year-to-year edit

Due to quirks of the calendar, not every season has the same number of weeks. See the 2004 season for example: 2004 NCAA Division I-A football rankings. That year, we would need to have 17 columns (preseason, weeks 1-15, and final ranking) instead of 16. Also, due to periodic changes, when the Harris Poll is released changes some years. In 2009, the Harris poll came out in Week 4 (2009 NCAA Division I FBS football rankings).

I think this template should be made flexible to deal with these quirks. The 2013 season will once again need 17 columns. And who knows when the Harris Poll will change again. Thoughts anyone? —Ute in DC (talk) 03:07, 5 September 2011 (UTC)Reply

  Done I have made these changes as well as fixed some color issues I found. Check out the testcases for examples. --ben_b (talk) 11:26, 5 September 2011 (UTC)Reply

First place votes edit

Tracking of first place votes may be useful as Boise State currently does. As this feature does not exist the Boise State box has not been updated with this template. --ben_b (talk) 07:21, 5 September 2011 (UTC)Reply

  Done An initial implementation for this has been done however I am open to better ways to show it. --ben_b (talk) 23:08, 28 November 2011 (UTC)Reply

Preseason polls edit

A way to list preseason poll results may be nice. --ben_b (talk) 08:04, 5 September 2011 (UTC)Reply

  Done Already done and any other polls that just release preseason polls should be listed near this template not as part of the template. --ben_b (talk) 11:20, 4 February 2012 (UTC)Reply

Possible other polls to add edit

CBSSports.com 120, BCS Fan Poll, http://mgoblog.com/. --ben_b (talk) 11:30, 5 September 2011 (UTC)Reply

As for these other polls, I think we should leave them out until they reach a further threshold of notability. As far as I can determine, no major news outlets report on these other polls. These polls seem to exist for human interest rather than as a service. For example, not even CBS News reports the cbssports.com poll on its network or affiliate stations. —Ute in DC (talk) 02:09, 7 September 2011 (UTC)Reply
Thoughts on the Legends Poll? --ben_b (talk) 03:55, 8 September 2011 (UTC)Reply

  Won't fix Unless other polls are desired in the future. --ben_b (talk) 22:18, 15 April 2012 (UTC)Reply

Wikitable edit

Some table conversations to proper wikitable format are needed. See Help:Table#Conditional_table_row --ben_b (talk) 20:24, 5 September 2011 (UTC)Reply

  Done This is done. --ben_b (talk) 01:57, 8 September 2011 (UTC)Reply

Problem with coloring when rank contains reference edit

When the rank contains a reference it does not color the background correctly. --ben_b (talk) 07:11, 28 November 2011 (UTC)Reply

  Done --ben_b (talk) 23:35, 28 November 2011 (UTC)Reply

Other sports edit

(Copied from User_talk:Ben_b#Template:NCAA_Division_I_FBS_football_rankings)
Nice work on {{NCAA Division I FBS football rankings}}. Is there a chance that it could be generalized for basketball (and possibly other sports) and for cases when you only have one poll? I.E., could you make it so that something like the following resulted in a valid template?

{{NCAA Division I FBS football rankings
| finalpollweek = 15
| AP_pre = RV
| AP_1 = RV
| AP_2 = RV
| AP_3 = 22
| AP_4 = 19
| AP_5 = 12
| AP_6 = 11
| AP_7 = 18
| AP_8 = 17
| AP_9 = 13
| AP_10 = 22
| AP_11 = 20
| AP_12 = 17
| AP_13 = 17
| AP_14 = 13
| AP_15 =
}}

Also can you add three features.

  1. Add the option to pipe row headings to the polls
  2. Add a poll size field so that the row headings can be piped like [[AP Poll|AP Top 10 Poll]] (note that in some years the AP and Coaches poll have had different sizes.)
  3. Add a ref field so that I can add a reference to the row heading.

See 1966–67_Princeton_Tigers_men's_basketball_team#Rankings to see what I am trying to do.--TonyTheTiger (T/C/BIO/WP:CHICAGO/WP:FOUR) 18:44, 6 December 2011 (UTC)Reply

  • I have been thinking about creating a new generalized template for more sports but hadn't quite thought of how to address the issue of varying numbers of polls, poll names, weeks, etc. I likely get started on this Friday but it may take some time. --ben_b (talk) 22:16, 6 December 2011 (UTC)Reply
What is the time frame?--TonyTheTiger (T/C/BIO/WP:CHICAGO/WP:FOUR) 20:59, 16 December 2011 (UTC)Reply
  Done See {{Ranking movements}}. Default templates similar to this one will be added for other sports in the future. Additionally this template has been updated to be based on {{Ranking movements}} and has some new parameters, mainly year which I intended to use in the future to auto populate the poll start and end weeks.--ben_b (talk) 12:23, 5 February 2012 (UTC)Reply
Thanks.--TonyTheTiger (T/C/BIO/WP:CHICAGO/WP:FOUR) 13:47, 5 February 2012 (UTC)Reply

Added Links To Poll Details edit

  Done I added the links to the poll details as part of the template now. --ben_b (talk) 05:31, 5 February 2012 (UTC)Reply

Poll title references edit

  Done You can now add references to poll titles using:

| AP_ref          = <!-- <rev></ref> or {{citation needed}} -->
| coaches_ref     = <!-- <rev></ref> or {{citation needed}} -->
| harris_ref      = <!-- <rev></ref> or {{citation needed}} -->
| bcs_ref         = <!-- <rev></ref> or {{citation needed}} -->

All it is really doing as adding extra text behind the poll title. --ben_b (talk) 21:58, 15 April 2012 (UTC)Reply

Hide polls with no results edit

Once hide polls with no results is done add to:

--ben_b (talk) 09:37, 1 May 2012 (UTC)Reply

What about using Template:Ranking movements in the meantime? Since both of those rankings are Pre-Coaches' Poll and only include the AP Poll. 129.118.6.188 (talk) 22:05, 14 November 2012 (UTC)Reply

Pages to add template to edit

Adding "ties" to legend edit

  • There needs to be a " т " symbol added to the legend for when there is a tie between teams for the same position. The symbol is already used on the annual rankings pages and would do well to translate the same thing to the individual teams' templates to create consistancy. 129.118.6.188 (talk) 22:11, 14 November 2012 (UTC)Reply

This CFP rankings edit has messed up all of the old rankings boxes on old articles. It needs to be fixed somehow. Thanks! -AllisonFoley (talk) 06:17, 16 May 2014 (UTC)Reply
  Done A new template has been created to use for rankings during the college football playoff era. See {{NCAA Division I FBS CFP ranking movements}}. This template can remain for use during the BCS era. Let me know your thoughts, only one article has been updated with the new template in order to get feedback. The CFP parameters have been removed from this template to restore the integrity of older articles, and 2014 team articles can be updated for use with the new template. NEMESIS63 | talk | 21:03, 26 June 2014 (UTC)Reply
I think we should add a parameter that says something like: |cfp=, and one would input either yes or no. NFLisAwesome 20:22, 21 May 2014 (UTC)Reply

New templates edit

We need to turn this template into four different ones. The first will just have AP and Coaches' rankings, and it'll be used for seasons pre-BCS, aka pre-1998; the second will have AP, Coaches' and BCS, and will be used for seasons from 1998 to 2004 (last year without Harris Poll); the third will have AP, Coaches', BCS and Harris, and will be used for 2004-2013 (end of BCS); and the fourth and final will have AP, Coaches' and CFP, dropping BCS because it doesn't exist anymore, and Harris, because it won't be used anymore. I honestly have no idea how to go about doing this, but this needs to happen, because the current template literally doesn't make sense on any CFB season article for any year.
