Wales map

Hello all,

I've created a File:Wales outline map with UK.png for use in this infobox. This was following this back in 2008. It's a map of the whole of Wales, at least for now, until I or somebody else gets round to creating district level maps. Would there be any objection to it being used for mapping out places in Wales in place articles? --Jza84 |  Talk  12:18, 1 January 2009 (UTC)

That's going to be much better than the current situation of showing a map of the whole of the UK. e.g. Bangor, Wales
Hopefully you could do one in a similar style for Scotland next, although you might want to ask for some opinions on wether to include Shetland in the map, or do it separately. (If not included then rest of the map could be bigger.) -- WOSlinker (talk) 12:33, 1 January 2009 (UTC)
I have made one for Edinburgh and the Outer Hebredies, so I suppose a seperate one for Shetland makes sense. With regards to the Wales map, if we're OK to use it, I just need somebody to convert it into a locator map, like that of say, Template:Location map United Kingdom North Yorkshire (I haven't a clue how it's done). I have asked User:Warofdreams, but he hasn't been online for a couple of weeks now. --Jza84 |  Talk  12:38, 1 January 2009 (UTC)
The map looks excellent - thanks! Ghmyrtle (talk) 13:17, 1 January 2009 (UTC)
Great job and much appreciated! Thanks! ~Geaugagrrl talk 16:13, 1 January 2009 (UTC)

I've created a template at Template:Location map Wales2 (as Wales was already in use) but I'm not 100% certain that it works properly yet, the coords may need a little tweak. Need to test a little more. -- WOSlinker (talk) 13:51, 1 January 2009 (UTC)

As you can see, for a few tests, the positioning is close, but not quite right yet.
<table><tr><td>{{location map|Wales2|label=|position=center|width=240|lat=53.228|long=-4.128|caption=Bangor|float=center}}</td><td>{{location map|Wales2|label=|position=center|width=240|lat=51.882342|long=-5.268796|caption=St David's|float=center}}</td><td>{{location map|Wales2|label=|position=center|width=240|lat=53.35117|long=-3.31911|caption=Talacre|float=center}}</td><tr></table>

-- WOSlinker (talk) 13:56, 1 January 2009 (UTC)
I've made some further adjustments, and it looks OK now to me for those test places. Thanks to Jza84 for creating the map, and WOSlinker for doing most of the work on the calibration. Warofdreams talk 14:23, 1 January 2009 (UTC)
Looks like a good calibration to me. I've just added the motorway network for Merseyside which I'd overlooked (should filter through in the next 24 hours). Are we good to go for adding into the main coding Infobox UK place? --Jza84 |  Talk  14:27, 1 January 2009 (UTC)
Already done! This should filter through into the links shown on the image page in the next 24 hours or so. One quick thought - should the M50 appear, or is it just off the map? Great work, Warofdreams talk 14:34, 1 January 2009 (UTC)
Just checked... and.... should be just on the map! I'll pop it in now. Won't take me 5 mins, and it won't affect the positioning of things. Thanks again folks, I've just had a look at some Welsh towns and it all looks great. A great improvement! Should've done this a while back! --Jza84 |  Talk  14:39, 1 January 2009 (UTC)
All towns on list of towns in Wales that have this infobox now appear to show new map Pit-yacker (talk) 15:52, 1 January 2009 (UTC)

Further slight adjustment needed?

I've just checked the map for Chepstow, and it looks like the dot is out by a mile or so - it should be immediately west, not east, of the border. Can another slight adjustment be made? Sorry to be fussy, but these things are important if you live there! Ghmyrtle (talk) 16:59, 1 January 2009 (UTC)

I've made a change and it's now on the border line. -- WOSlinker (talk) 20:16, 1 January 2009 (UTC)
That looks fine, thanks. Ghmyrtle (talk) 21:38, 1 January 2009 (UTC)
Another slight change? Bangor, Gwynedd looks as if it is more like the settlement of Menai Bridge or in the middle of the Menai Straits, with Menai Bridge looking a bit like it could be more closer to Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch than desirable (seriously, it isn't too bad, but I wanted a chance to put in that link). Llanfairfechan, however, look all right, so perhaps this is a matter of tweaking the coordinates used thing?  DDStretch  (talk) 20:26, 1 January 2009 (UTC)

Microformats

  Resolved

I've added the hCard microformat (see also WP:UF). This template must use the new {{coord}} template, if the Geo microformat is also to be included. Andy Mabbett 19:53, 19 April 2007 (UTC)

I've just changed to using coord, but it seems that the "display=title" property isn't being used. Can anyone assist, please? Thank you. Andy Mabbett 22:39, 10 May 2007 (UTC)
Moved from documentation talk page. Andy Mabbett (User:Pigsonthewing); Andy's talk; Andy's edits 11:31, 24 January 2009 (UTC)
As far as I can see both of the calls to {{Coord}} are passed the parameter display=title, is this not what is required? Keith D (talk) 12:56, 24 January 2009 (UTC)
Thanks; it seems to have been fixed since I first raised the issue. Andy Mabbett (User:Pigsonthewing); Andy's talk; Andy's edits 21:23, 24 January 2009 (UTC)

Small text and image sizes

Why is the image size 240px specified; and why <small> text for image captions? If these values are preferred (and there are accessibility concerns with small text), then they should be hard-coded into the template. Andy Mabbett (User:Pigsonthewing); Andy's talk; Andy's edits 11:29, 24 January 2009 (UTC)

I agree this should be hard-coded. 240px was chosen so that the image lines up with the maps (which are hard-coded to 240px]], and to ensure consistency throughout the project. I think it was me who suggested the small captions - and there was agreement - purely on a cosmetic basis to keep the length of the infobox minimal and to keep the look of the caption consistent with the map caption.
Would there be an effective way to hard-code these elements? --Jza84 |  Talk  19:27, 24 January 2009 (UTC)
If we are going to change to normal size for the image caption, the the map caption should also be changed as small and italics is more of a problem and is much more difficult to read. Keith D (talk) 20:19, 24 January 2009 (UTC)
A bot could take on a task like this, effecting a consistent change to every article, either adding <small> tags to all captions (or removing them to allow the template to do the work consistently, which I would favour), or changing image sizes. or whatever was agreed to be appropriate. Standardising image sizes might take a 2-stage process and involve a small change to the template (e.g. adding static_image_name= and static_image_size= fields, with a default of 240 for the size, and the bot could transition what we currently have to that, perhaps only removing (and thus standardising) image sizes within the 200-300px range to allow for particular requirements (I notice Belfast's chosen image looks good at 100 but doesn't work as well at 240, for example). The template could then wrap the filename with the required [[File:...|{{{static_image_size|240}}}px]] formatting.
I shall propose this as a Possible Bot Task (below) for discussion. ClickRick (talk) 10:08, 6 July 2009 (UTC)

Post District slightly borked problem?

See Eoropie. Why is the Postcode District borked? The anchor has an extra pipe, but wikipedia is not even turning it into a red link. Confused

A response from Nanonic elsewhere said "Because postcode_area and postcode_district are linked and both need to be present. postcode_area just links whatever is in postcode_district to the article HS postcode area. To cut a long story short, just enter HS2 in postcode_district and it'll work.". I'm still not very clear about why the template has been designed so that entering a Postcode Area without a Postcode District causes a borked link. And I wonder how many instances of this we have - I've found a couple this evening. --Tagishsimon (talk) 02:05, 4 February 2009 (UTC)
Not sure about the technicalities of the infobox syntax, but I've added further detail to the Eoropie infobox and the postcode is now correctly displayed and now also location map and dial code.Dallan72 (talk) 18:39, 4 February 2009 (UTC)
Thanks for flagging this up. I've now fixed this issue - see the old version of the Eoropie article. Warofdreams talk 20:57, 4 February 2009 (UTC)
Excellent; thanks. --Tagishsimon (talk) 21:08, 4 February 2009 (UTC)

Map problems?

Is anybody else having problems with maps not appearing when the article(s) load? In my browser (IE), they seem to load, appear for a second, and disappear. This has gone on for most of this week for me :S --Jza84 |  Talk  01:02, 6 February 2009 (UTC)

I've not had that problem, but I've had the problem of page-changes not being visible, and having to do a purge (done from within wikipedia) almost every day at some point with some articles to get to see the edits I've just done. I'm also having periodic very slow and sluggish responses to edits, where I move the cursor, do some edits, and find the characters I've entered have been distributed along the text in between where the cursor was and where it was moved to before I entered any characters—it's happened in this message, and only happens with wikipedia.  DDStretch  (talk) 01:10, 6 February 2009 (UTC)
I sometimes have the same issue as Jza84 when an article loads. Also, and there's probably a good reason for this - which escapes me: Numerous Wales places articles (e.g:Rhuddlan) are missing their maps and replaced by map syntax instead, which includes: Expression error: Unrecognised punctuation character. Snowy 1973 (talk) 16:39, 6 February 2009 (UTC)
Same here (typical example) on Wales places (using Firefox).  Badgernet  ₪  16:45, 6 February 2009 (UTC)
That issue should now be fixed - it was caused by an interwiki bot adding a link to the Welsh map template. Warofdreams talk 17:18, 6 February 2009 (UTC)
It was an edit to Template:Location map Wales2 by User:Obersachsebot. See diff here. I've now fixed the template. -- WOSlinker (talk) 17:25, 6 February 2009 (UTC)
Looks like we both fixed it as the bot broke it TWICE. -- WOSlinker (talk) 17:28, 6 February 2009 (UTC)
[Out] The Greater London map now seems to have given up the ghost! Kbthompson (talk) 12:09, 12 February 2009 (UTC)
OK, it was the same problem - I've fixed it. Kbthompson (talk) 12:31, 12 February 2009 (UTC)
Gone again - for Greater London locations .... Kbthompson (talk) 20:37, 18 February 2009 (UTC)
Greater Manchester too... I think the whole lot are down. It isn't perhaps because the template is being transcluded too much and getting overloaded is it? --Jza84 |  Talk  20:44, 18 February 2009 (UTC)
OK, it was an interwiki addition to {{Location map/Info}}. Pls try it now. Kbthompson (talk) 20:45, 18 February 2009 (UTC)
Looks OK again now! :) --Jza84 |  Talk  20:48, 18 February 2009 (UTC)
Thank god for that - I hate touching these things! Kbthompson (talk) 20:49, 18 February 2009 (UTC)
(I should add there is an error in the parser that sometimes kicks up at the end of a template declaration - it misses the 'noinclude' on the next line. Tagging it to the end of the closure brackets usually forces the parser to act correctly. As a matter of principal, bots and interwikis should not be allowed to touch these without testing the results! I noticed an unreg'd user had been at that one too - maybe I should protect it?) Kbthompson (talk) 20:57, 18 February 2009 (UTC)
I've protected against non-admins - same level as {{Location map}}. The individual city maps aren't protected. Kbthompson (talk) 21:15, 18 February 2009 (UTC)
London maps disappeared again! Is this general, or restricted to London? Kbthompson (talk) 18:15, 26 February 2009 (UTC)
and now they're back again ... no changes on my part. I guess it could have been a cache problem (I did a forced refresh). Kbthompson (talk) 19:30, 26 February 2009 (UTC)

Rutland and Surrey

Is there any reason why Rutland and Surrey, alone among English ceremonial counties, don't have county templates? Skinsmoke (talk) 17:52, 21 February 2009 (UTC)

Probably no one has got round to making them as yet. Keith D (talk) 20:14, 21 February 2009 (UTC)

domesday book in infobox

i think that someone should put a bit in the infobox from the domesday book (meaning what the town/village was called/refferred to in the domesday book)

De Mattia (talk) 07:10, 23 February 2009 (UTC)

I'm not convinced this would be worthwhile/effective. Most places in UK were not documented in the survey. --Jza84 |  Talk  12:12, 23 February 2009 (UTC)
I can see some use for it, but it would probably be better as a separate template [template:infobox Domesday place].I am willing to do it provided I see some more support. Twiceuponatime (talk) 09:31, 24 February 2009 (UTC)
It is a problem. The Domesday Book only covered England so not really suitable for a UK places infobox. And most places now existing were not covered in 1086 (or didn't even exist then) so it would be redundant in the vast majority of UK place articles. However, a separate Domesday template that could be added to appropriate places' articles - now that might be useful. Emeraude (talk) 18:30, 24 February 2009 (UTC)
On second thoughts I think that an infobox would probably be too restrictive. Probably better to have a new section ==Domesday Book== with a fairly standard paragraph. In which case it should be raised at WP:UKCITIES. A small banner might be useful 'This settlement appears in the {Domesday Book]'. Twiceuponatime (talk) 09:05, 25 February 2009 (UTC)
Alright, lets forget this whole idea. There would not be any point anyway to create a whole new infobox, it would only have been good to add it on to the existing one but your reponses are totally justafiable and I can see now it would be unreasonable. De Mattia (talk) 05:37, 2 April 2009 (UTC)

Template loop

See St Columb Major that I had to link the region to avoid a template loop. And in the documenation it say NOT to link the region. Indeed, now the European Parliament constituency turns out funny.

Could somebody check what the problem is? Debresser (talk) 21:36, 5 April 2009 (UTC)

Restormel was succeeded on 1 April by the Cornwall unitary authority. I think this may be the source of the problem. HTH Kbthompson (talk) 22:09, 5 April 2009 (UTC)
I had to work it out, but see this comparable edit to Fowey! You may want to reconsider the usefulness of {{Restormel navigation box}}. Kbthompson (talk) 22:16, 5 April 2009 (UTC)

Kbthompson fixed it. As you can see from here, the addition of the shire_county is what fixed the loop.

I personally would say that a template that goes beserk when a shire_county is missing needs some polishing. Debresser (talk) 20:29, 6 April 2009 (UTC)

I can't defend the complexity of the template; but when the right input data is put in, it largely gets it right. The template parser is very 'simple' and doesn't include much in the way of error handling. There might be an argument for rewriting it to 'failsafe' where parameters are missing, or incorrect - but this template is so convoluted (to handle the many idiosyncrasies of UK places) that it's not a job I would volunteer for! Kbthompson (talk) 10:42, 7 April 2009 (UTC)
I reworked the template around a year ago to simplify it(!) If the correct data goes in, it should work every time. If there are any common errors, then it would be good to escape them, and I'll look into this case, where a region is provided but no county or unitary authority is entered. Warofdreams talk 13:32, 8 April 2009 (UTC)
... and a fine job you did - on the previous conflation of multiple templates. It would be difficult to reduce it further; and (as I said) there are few error conditions available in the template syntax - there is a default clause which might help here - but I suspect not solve Debresser's problems.
Whenever something goes wrong, I can look forward to a lost evening - but that may be my own inexperience. So, overall, I'm glad you're here! Kbthompson (talk) 14:47, 8 April 2009 (UTC)

Longitude/latitude

Just as a comment, it doesn't seem to be converting decimal long/lat into dms at the moment? Eg Achnacarry And could someone tell me why the map doesn't work on Dalwhinnie, or is that just a legacy from the earlier problems? Le Deluge (talk) 13:12, 8 April 2009 (UTC)

I don't believe that the template has ever converted decimal long/lat into dms. It could do that, but there's never been any call for it. With Dalwhinnie, the problem was that you had included two latitude and two longitude fields, leaving one of each blank. I've fixed it by simply removing the unneeded blank fields. Warofdreams talk 13:27, 8 April 2009 (UTC)
Ach, don't you hate it when that happens? I had a feeling it was something like that, but couldn't see for looking. Thanks for sorting it. On the dms - can you consider this a call for it? :-) Not only is it more user-friendly, but it would be more consistent with other infoboxes which aren't as clever as this one and simply expect people to use {{coord}}? Which of course puts a dms in the top right corner. Consistency is a Good Thing. I must admit, I could have sworn that I'd seen UK places with dms coordinates, but either they used coord or I was just imagining it. Great template though, I'm in awe of anyone who can get Wikitemplating to be that useful.... Le Deluge (talk) 14:31, 8 April 2009 (UTC)

Scottish parliament constituencies
