Proposing to add parameter edit

I was thinking of adding a parameter to this template, to pass the username of the creator. this user name can then be link to I, the creator of this work.

If you agree to this, can this be achieved with auxiliary template so that there wont be a problem in the image pages that currently uses {{GFDL-self}} without parameter ? --Oblivious 08:39, 11 August 2005 (UTC)Reply

Licence vs. license edit

GFDL stands for GNU Free Documentation License. Not "Licence". Let's be coherent and use a single form at least within a single template, and the one that is more popular. - Sikon 02:17, 3 October 2005 (UTC)Reply

Licence is a noun, while license is a verb. --200.106.194.23 19:55, 11 October 2005 (UTC)Reply
I thought it was the brit and the US way. --Oblivious 20:40, 11 October 2005 (UTC)Reply
See license. --Fibonacci 06:32, 15 October 2005 (UTC)Reply
Since nobody is objecting anymore, I'm changing it back to "licence". --Fibonacci 19:30, 22 October 2005 (UTC)Reply
Nobody is objecting anymore? I thought I was objecting. And nobody cared to explain the reason why the word "licence" is used in this particular template related to the GNU Free Documentation License. - Sikon 12:30, 11 November 2005 (UTC)Reply

Template change edit

Why was this template changed to remove the "I, the creator of this work" line? It's now less useful, you have to dive into the page source to see whether the image is tagged GFDL or GFDL-self. Is there a good reason not to change it back? --Bob Mellish 19:42, 10 November 2005 (UTC)Reply

  • I have no idea. What about the following version:

I, the creator of this work, hereby grant the permission to copy, distribute and/or modify this document under the terms of the GNU Free Documentation License, Version 1.2 or any later version published by the Free Software Foundation; with no Invariant Sections, no Front-Cover Texts, and no Back-Cover Texts.
Subject to disclaimers.

Disclaimer edit

Per my and other's comments on Template talk:GFDL, I've removed the "Subject to [Wikipedia] disclaimers" from this template, since the GFDL isn't, obviously. -Splashtalk 17:21, 25 November 2005 (UTC)Reply

change proposal edit

I hereby propose to add conditional parameters to the template which would link the creator of this work to the creator's user page. Proposed parameter is creator. I've duplicated the template to my user page and added the template-if statment.

Template without parameter passed would produce...

{{User:Oblivious/Proposed GFDL-self}}
I, the creator of this work, hereby publish it under the following licence:

Permission is granted to copy, distribute and/or modify this document under the terms of the GNU Free Documentation License, Version 1.2 or any later version published by the Free Software Foundation; with no Invariant Sections, no Front-Cover Texts, and no Back-Cover Texts.
Subject to disclaimers.

Template with optional parameter would produce...

{{User:Oblivious/Proposed GFDL-self|creator=Oblivious}}

Below is the 'markup' to make this possible.

{{#if:{{{creator|}}}
  | [[User:{{{creator}}}| the creator of this work]]
  | the creator of this work
}}

This way we do not need to change each and every GFDL-self'ed images and at the same time users who wish to link has the chance. What do you say? --Oblivious 13:41, 28 December 2005 (UTC)Reply

Here we go again? edit

So, even though everyone seemed to be content with "I, the creator of this work, hereby grant the permission to"... etc., someone decided to once again revert it to the "licence" version - and protect it. Care to explain? It's really odd to have both "licence" and "license" on the same template. Be consistent, at the very least. - Sikon 11:06, 12 January 2006 (UTC)Reply

It was already protected, I just restored the last version which included the license meta data. I'll go make the spelling consistent. Zocky 13:03, 12 January 2006 (UTC)Reply

The comment at the top of this template says:

"<!-- License: GFDL, transcluded from Template:GFDL -->"

However, that is a different template. It should refer to this template, and say:

Putting into a sub category of Category:GFDL images edit

This template currently adds pages to Category:Self-published work and Category:GFDL images. I think it would be a good idea to put images with a {{GFDL-self}} into Category:User-created GFDL images instead of Category:GFDL images just like {{PD-self}} adds into Category:User-created public domain images.

If we do that (and with {{GFDL-self-with-disclaimers}} into Category:User-created public domain images with disclaimers) then we should have the files left where uploader is not author and where we should check if there is a valid permission. Makes it easier to cleanup. --MGA73 (talk) 11:41, 23 February 2012 (UTC)Reply

Or perhaps we should call it Category:Self-created public domain images so that files with GFDL-self and GFDL-user can go to different categories. --MGA73 (talk) 14:07, 23 February 2012 (UTC)Reply

Free media tag edit

In the sandbox I've added a tweak so that 'free' images of unfree works do not categorise with entirely free works.
