editAnyone else think it might be good to put 20px images beside the names of the films. Not to say we upload loads of new ones, just as they are uploaded for the articles themselves. Obviously the formatting would have to be changed though.
Template alteration
editI alternated the colors to this template. I hope you like it. Evolutionselene 10:54, 20 October 2007 (UTC)
Friday the 13th franchise
editRecently, it seems as though Bignole has taken to including the entire Friday the 13 franchise in the template, and vice versa for the other template. His argument is that they should be included because, in his words, they "feature the two most beloved horror icons of all time", they've had multiple crossovers, and are both owned by New Line Cinema.
While I do not deny the fact that there have been many crossovers, the two are on the surface, not related in any way. Also, to list a reason as being that they feature the two most beloved horror icons is incredibly suggestive; is that an opinion or a fact? Maybe it is true, but it seems like his opinion only. Lastly, while both are owned by New Line, Paramount Pictures retains some rights to the Friday the 13th franchise; Nightmare is owned soley by New Line. Do we really need to include these links to seperate franchises in the two templates? I say no. - Cartoon Boy (talk) 8:35, 2 October 2010 (UTC)
- "Related to" does not mean it has to be a direct relation like a sequel to a film (which is falls under anyway). Related to means that it shares some form of relationship with the other topic. In this case, they share many relationships on different levels, and their relationship is pretty strong considering they share the same continuity within the film world. Also, I didn't say "beloved icons", I said "recognizable". There's a difference, as one is far less subjective. Paramount also only owns small portions of the franchise, not the franchise as a whole. New Line owns the franchise outright. BIGNOLE (Contact me) 16:52, 2 October 2010 (UTC)
My apologies, I must have been quoting from memory. Also, I fail to see how they share the same continuity - other than Freddy vs. Jason and other crossovers. Also, I am not implying it has to be a direct relationship; I just do not see how they are similar, even on different levels. Maybe we should get other people's input rather than just you and myself. - Cartoon Boy (talk) 1:03, 6 October 2010 (UTC)
- Fail to see the same continuity? Continuity is something that stretches across an entire series, it doesn't have to be present from the start to be present in the end. FvJ was the first crossover in film. Then you have the comic book crossovers, which were sequels to the film. Then the connection of being owned by the same company. The fact that the two primary characters are regularly compared to one another, even in scholarly materials (there's at least one such scholarly work that is listed on both of their individual pages), the fact that they are even often seen together in popular culture. We're talking about a single link here on the template that merely says, "Hey, there is another horror franchise that is related to this one and you might want to check it out". BIGNOLE (Contact me) 01:54, 6 October 2010 (UTC)
That's just it, though. In my opinion, this means nothing; being owned by the same company as well. Sure, there are crossovers, but there are many examples of crossovers done by studios of two of their works. Should we include a link to those series or franchises just because they are owned by the same entity, and have crossovers? No. Also, the fact that you said that the link merely says, "You should check out this related franchise" is a poor excuse to include it.
Would you be willing to compromise to some degree and at least remove the links until a solid consensus has been reached? I'm trying to make this work... we should at least get other people on here and have them voice their opinions. - Cartoon Boy (talk) 8:36, 6 October 2010 (UTC)
- First, the crossovers between Nightmare and Friday are consider official crossovers that tie-into the continuity of the film series. You can read the pages for the comics, franchise, or the sources themselves and see that. Any other crossover that exists was done as a non-canon one-shot. You haven't actually provided a reason as to why it shouldn't be there, just dismissed the reason for why it should. As for removing it, the link was present for a week before anyone challenged it (anyone being a single IP - which apparently, based on what I can see...is actually you). Being present without debate for that long at least retains some form of silent consensus. Given that it doesn't harm the template in any way with its presence, why would one remove it until there is consensus to put it back? It should be more, "consensus to remove it" given that it was there for a week with regular editing and no one challenged it until you. As for more opinions, I would suggest posting something on related (am I allowed to use that word here?) WikiProjects because you're unlikely to find a lot of opinions if you rely on who watches this template. BIGNOLE (Contact me) 13:05, 6 October 2010 (UTC)
Actually, that was not me. Anyway, thank you for providing examples... that's all I wanted. I am perfectly fine with it now. I am sorry if I caused you any inconvenience. - Cartoon Boy (talk) 17:23, 6 October 20
- If it wasn't you, then why did the same IP write a message with your signature (see this edit)? BIGNOLE (Contact me) 22:20, 6 October 2010 (UTC)
Issues concerning the addition of "Friday the 13th (franchise)" to the "Related topics" section
edit@Bignole: Would you please explain what your problem is with Friday the 13th (franchise) being added to the "Related topics" section? Because as far as I'm aware, the existence of an official crossover movie (along with other material as well) which connects the two universes into a single universe logically and unavoidably means that the two franchises are related, and suggesting the contrary would seem equal to arguing the official crossover movie doesn't exist, whether legally or actually. - TurokSwe (talk) 14:57, 9 October 2019 (UTC)
- Anyone arriving, please see discussion at Template talk:Friday the 13th#Issues concerning the addition of "A Nightmare on Elm Street (franchise)" to the "Related topics" section so that all talk can be together. BIGNOLE (Contact me) 15:26, 9 October 2019 (UTC)
