University of Freiburg Faculty of Biology edit

greenhouse of Botanical Garden

  • Comment: first nom of user, as far as I know

Created/expanded by AlGordo (talk). Nominated by Gerda Arendt (talk) at 13:49, 15 June 2012 (UTC)

  • I checked the source, and found no such statement, so I corrected the article. What the source's chart implies is that according to several criteria, it is among the top research universities in biology---it has a red dot in a handful of criteria. There is no statement of how many other research universities have the same number of dots, so it is misleading to infer that this is a top university from the dots. If somebody wants to register with the first source, they may find something to substantiate the first claim. I checked the second source. Most importantly, the ranking is 2012 only. There is no statement about the (promotional bs) "constantly" in the second source.
  • The article needs reviewing by somebody willing to register with the source. The hook needs rewriting, following the review of the article.
  • I know that it is an excellent faculty, e.g. in epigenetics, and I trust that somebody will fix the article/hook.
  • Now that I've reviewed two hooks, and done rewriting of both articles, will somebody please review my hook on major-thirds tuning and augmented-fourths tuning? Kiefer.Wolfowitz 19:01, 21 June 2012 (UTC)
  • Nominator speaking: thanks for reviewing and rewriting! As soon as you adjusted the article I adjusted the hook (removing "constantly"). The hook did/does not imply "top university", just "top faculty" - also the article is about the faculty only. Other hooks are possible, this was simply the first thing that came to my mind as noteworthy.
ALT1: ... that the University of Freiburg Faculty of Biology (greenhouse pictured) was ranked in 2012 among Germany's top institutions of education, according to CHE University Ranking??
I was traveling and am still behind catching up, so I will not be the one looking at tuning anytime soon, sorry ;) --Gerda Arendt (talk) 19:41, 21 June 2012 (UTC)
The hook is indeed sourced, and based on an in-line citation in the article. I have not read the whole article. Kiefer.Wolfowitz 21:48, 22 June 2012 (UTC)
Hey there - unfortunately I do not have any spare time for editing right now, but here and here are sources confirming former (2008/2009 and 2010/2011) excellent CHE-rankings concerning University of Freiburg´s Faculty of Biology... Might be of interest? Regards, --AlGordo (talk) 16:55, 23 June 2012 (UTC)
added both refs and a blurb to the article, hence propose...
ALT2: ... that in 2010 the University of Freiburg Faculty of Biology (greenhouse pictured) was ranked in the Excellence Group among Germany's top universities for biology, chemistry and mathematics by CHE University Ranking? PumpkinSky talk 22:42, 26 June 2012 (UTC)
This is just promotional really - there are also endless university league tables - it's part of their advertising (at least in the UK). I'm unhappy with any hook which just exists to say "X is really great". It's just an advert on the front page. Secretlondon (talk) 00:15, 29 June 2012 (UTC)
then how about ALT3: ... that while the University of Freiburg Faculty of Biology was founded in 1970, it's greenhouse (pictured) was founded in 1620?
The article says 1920!Secretlondon (talk) 02:34, 30 June 2012 (UTC)
Look again pls: "original botanical garden was founded in 1620 as hortus medicus." PumpkinSky talk 12:44, 30 June 2012 (UTC)
It moved several times - you say its greenhouse (pictured) meaning that was the greenhouse founded in 1620. Secretlondon (talk) 19:32, 30 June 2012 (UTC)
DYK quirkiness to get attention, happens all the time. Reword if you like but would like to keep 1620 in there somehow.PumpkinSky talk 21:31, 30 June 2012 (UTC)
I think there is a line between "quirkiness" and lies. Secretlondon (talk) 03:37, 3 July 2012 (UTC)

ALT4: ... that the research facilties of the University of Freiburg Faculty of Biology (greenhouse pictured) date back to a hortus medicus for medicinal herbs founded in 1620? --Gerda Arendt (talk) 07:55, 2 July 2012 (UTC)

I wonder if a stub "Hortus medicus" should be created, it's mentioned in many articles. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 09:53, 2 July 2012 (UTC)
I think ALT4 is fine. Secretlondon (talk) 03:37, 3 July 2012 (UTC)
We're nearly there! However we need a reference for the 1620 date. Secretlondon (talk) 03:43, 3 July 2012 (UTC)
  • It was there (admittedly not right after the fact), + I added a second, that one also to the garden. It's a very detailed history that could be used to reference the garden further, - I don't have the time right now. The second ref doesn't mention the Latin term but Medicine, so we might also say
ALT5: ... that the research facilties of the University of Freiburg Faculty of Biology (greenhouse pictured) date back to a botanical garden founded in 1620 by the Faculty of Medicine? --Gerda Arendt (talk) 10:11, 3 July 2012 (UTC)
ALT 4 or 5 are the best so far and both ok with me. PumpkinSky talk 22:01, 3 July 2012 (UTC)
ALT 4 and ALT5 are good, photo good, the synthetic biology references really need a date to differentiate them, it's long enough, was recent enough when nominated - good to go! Secretlondon (talk) 08:12, 4 July 2012 (UTC)
Added dates.PumpkinSky talk 10:30, 4 July 2012 (UTC)
