The Left Hand of Darkness

edit

Improved to Good Article status by Vanamonde93 (talk). Self-nominated at 18:59, 8 April 2016 (UTC).

  • Has recently been promoted to GA status. Definitely long enough and within policy guidelines. Without symbols, the character count of the hook is below 200. Hook is definitely neutral. The issue is that I'm not sure the hook is totally accurate. It says that they planet's inhabitants are androgynous, but they are only androgynous most of the time (as it says in the article, "for twenty-four days (somer) of each twenty-six day lunar cycle, they are sexually latent androgynes")
  • Onel5969, you're quite right; my statement here is an oversimplification of the sexuality of the fictional inhabitants of Gethen, and I should have realized that. The question remains, though, as to how to explain what is perhaps the most eye-catching thing about the novel in a sentence. How about the following, which comes in at 195 characters;
ALT1 ... that Ursula K. Le Guin's 1969 novel The Left Hand of Darkness, which won both the Hugo and Nebula awards, is set on a fictional planet whose people are androgynous for most of their sexual cycle?
Personally, I'd rather have "neither male nor female" since that is less jargon-y, but that brings it to 207. Alternatively, I could switch the wording up like this, which comes in at 193, but is perhaps slightly clunkier;
ALT3 ... that Ursula K. Le Guin's Hugo and Nebula award winning 1969 novel The Left Hand of Darkness, is set on a fictional planet whose people are neither male nor female for most of their sexual cycle?
I'm working on that QPQ, btw, I'll get it done soon. Vanamonde93 (talk) 06:38, 10 April 2016 (UTC) QPQ done. Vanamonde93 (talk) 21:00, 12 April 2016 (UTC)
@Onel5969:; perhaps you missed the first ping. I believe I have addressed the issues with the hook; could you take a look? Regards, Vanamonde93 (talk) 02:48, 17 April 2016 (UTC)
Yup, Vanamonde93 - didn't get notification of that earlier ping. I'm okay with Alt 1 (which highlights the Nebula/Hugo awards, which are definitely important). Onel5969 TT me 02:57, 17 April 2016 (UTC)
