Interesting life and career, on good sources, offline sources accepted AGF, no copyvio obvious. Hook: Don't expect every reader will know that The Sorcerer is a G&S piece, please mention it. I'd say "created the role" instead of "originated the leading role", - if it was a minor role we'd not mention it. I wonder about the last section: will it raise curiosity, or not? Same for the year in brackets. My version of the same:- ALT1:
... that after a long European career in opera and concert, George Bentham created the role of Alexis in the Gilbert & Sullivan comic opera The Sorcerer? - Article title: I know dabs with the precise voice type, reserving "(singer)" for those where we don't know, or who sang several. George Bentham (tenor)?
- Article suggestions (not needed for approval, just food for thought): I am used to give the name of the composer of operas, for example: Mozart's The Magic Flute. Why not? I don't know the role Vizzani in that opera (nor in any other). The opera is linked twice, btw. I'd not link to the person Mark Smeaton, but say Smeton as in the opera. That article should have the link, - it seems a bit distracting looking at the singer. It may be my limited English, understanding "direction" as what a stage director does, and "conducting" as the musical leading. I suggest some equivalent of "professional singer in Europe" in the lead. - I love all the critics' quotes, thank you! --Gerda Arendt (talk) 21:12, 30 April 2018 (UTC)
- I removed the repeated link and changed to Smeton, as you suggest. Costa was the "festival director", but I changed it to "conducted by", and also added what you suggest to the Lead section. I do not think that your Alt 1 is helpful, because "long" is a very vague word. Bentham's opera and concert career was about a decade, so the original hook is much clearer. Also, you have completely lost the most interesting thing about his career, which is that he abruptly ended it after The Sorcerer. I added G&S to the original hook, but does that make it too long?
