Edmund Hillary edit

  • ... that Hillary's portrait is now being printed on some $5 bills? "Sir Edmund Hillary features on the face of the $5 note" [1]; "Banknotes in circulation ... New Zealand has two sets of banknotes in circulation" [showing image of Hillary $5 bill] [2]

Improved to Good Article status by EEng (talk). Self-nominated at 17:32, 20 March 2018 (UTC).

I am willing to review. Please sort the pics, the stamp should be right, to make him "look in", first thing I noticed. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 14:42, 23 March 2018 (UTC)
Substantial Good article, on excellent sources, offline sources accepted AGF, no copyvio obvious, the fact is pictured, but please also have the ref right behind that fact, not a sentence later. This is DYK, tough rulez. Good for 1 April, and I trust that you will solve the pic position. (Too many images for my taste, perhaps drop one or two.) --Gerda Arendt (talk) 14:56, 23 March 2018 (UTC)
  • Can I please suggest a slightly more pithy ALT that is slightly less spoilery?
ALT1 "... that Hillary's portrait is now being printed on the $5 bill?"
We don't need to say 'some' $5 bills, he is clearly printed on the $5 bill of New Zealand. If people misunderstand this to mean "the $5 bill of the USA" then who are we to disabuse them? ;D — Insertcleverphrasehere (or here) 21:35, 27 March 2018 (UTC)
The original "some" wording was meant to lend verusimilitude by implying an explanation for why he mightn't have encountered such bills -- Mrs. Clinton is only on some of them. But looking at your formulation now, it seems to fulfill that function just as well, and is better in other ways. Let's hold this adjustment, however, until the renewed contretemps is over. This is going to be such a hoot, though of course we may not be laughing quite so hard when El Presidente For Life sends us off to Guantanamo. EEng 21:45, 27 March 2018 (UTC)
  • I support ALT1. It's more direct and just plain better. --Tryptofish (talk) 22:47, 27 March 2018 (UTC)
Oh, no no no. It has to connote the newness of this implied development. Your wording kind of makes it sound like this Hillary person is on all $5 bills, or has been on $5 bills for some time, and that may rouse the reader's critical faculties from their torpor. We don't want that. EEng 05:05, 28 March 2018 (UTC)
What do you think of this:
ALT3 ... that Hillary's portrait is now being printed on a $5 bill?
... because "the" suggests there's only one, no? --Gerda Arendt (talk) 06:47, 28 March 2018 (UTC)
the as in "the miniskirt was popular in the 1960s" -- a model or style. EEng 11:29, 28 March 2018 (UTC)
... fine if you talk about the style, but you wouldn't say "Hillary was pictured on the miniskirt", no? --Gerda Arendt (talk) 12:22, 28 March 2018 (UTC)
@EEng: Well, Sir Edmund has been featured on the NZ$5 banknotes since 1999, so it would be a bit disingenuous to make our readers infer that this is a new development. I feel the "wait, what?" value of the hook is equally strong with or without the "new! improved! hot off the presses!" qualifier. — JFG talk 13:59, 28 March 2018 (UTC)
Perhaps you don't realize this is for April 1; see my link above justcafter the original hook. EEng 15:28, 28 March 2018 (UTC)
I agree with EEng that "now being printed" is better than "appears", and I think that "a" as opposed to "the" introduces a distraction ("wait, which one?") that gets in the way of the humor. I still think that ALT1 is the best choice. No need to overthink it. --Tryptofish (talk) 16:16, 28 March 2018 (UTC)
I fully understand this is meant for April 1, to go along with the Trump–Russia streets and the Japanese Obama. I stand by my opinion that shorter hooks are more punchy. (No idea whether shorter punches are hookier, though…) Let's see what other editors think. — JFG talk 00:25, 29 March 2018 (UTC)
Shorter hookers punch lower... I could go on with those all day. ;) --Tryptofish (talk) 20:18, 29 March 2018 (UTC)
  • I just want to be clear that, as nominator, I far prefer ALT1. EEng 12:54, 29 March 2018 (UTC)
